Imran Khan held in 'death cell', claims PTI

Listen to article Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has raised alarm over what it described as 'inhumane' treatment of its incarcerated founder, Imran Khan, claiming he is being held in a 'death cell' under near-total isolation. Addressing a press conference on Thursday, PTI Central Secretary for Information Sheikh Waqas Akram alleged that Khan is confined to solitary detention for 22 hours daily, denied access to newspapers, television, books, and is barred from meeting his legal team and close associates. Akram stated that the conditions amount to psychological torture and a blatant violation of basic human rights. 'Imran Khan is effectively cut off from the world. His fundamental right to meet six designated individuals is being denied, despite explicit court orders, which constitutes contempt of court,' he said. He added that similar restrictions have been imposed on Khan's wife, Bushra Bibi, who is allegedly being denied family visits, while Khan's sister, Aleema Khan, has also been prevented from seeing him. 'The violation of judicial orders is not just an insult to the courts but to the entire justice system,' he remarked. The PTI spokesperson also questioned the recent disqualification of politician Jamshed Dasti, claiming that Article 62(1)(d) of the Constitution has never before been used to unseat public representatives, and alleging that constitutional provisions are now being misapplied for political engineering. Highlighting concerns over the health and treatment of other detained PTI leaders, he pointed to the 'deteriorating condition' of Shah Mehmood Qureshi, the 'systematic violation' of Dr Yasmin Rashid's rights, and the continued imprisonment of Ejaz Chaudhry despite Supreme Court orders granting him bail. On economic matters, Akram criticised the federal government over skyrocketing fuel prices, claiming petrol prices have surged by 82% over the past 15 months. 'During PTI's term, petrol prices rose by Rs51, but the current government scrapped subsidies and pushed the price to Rs220 per litre,' he said. Also Read: Imran Khan chose prison over life of comfort abroad He also accused the government of orchestrating a Rs92 billion sugar scandal, alleging that after the approval to export 765,000 metric tons of sugar, domestic supplies vanished from the market, causing prices to soar to Rs200 per kilogram. Addressing the May 9 cases, Akram claimed that the prosecution's position has collapsed following the withdrawal of a key investigating officer and the absence of primary witness Hassan Afzal. He demanded the immediate dismissal of all related cases. Expressing sorrow over the recent floods in Punjab that led to 103 deaths and the destruction of 250 homes, Akram criticised what he described as the government's inept disaster response. 'When the public protests, they are jailed. Yet, officials responsible for this negligence go unpunished,' he remarked. In closing, Akram disclosed that Khan has conveyed directives concerning the upcoming Senate elections in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, delegating authority for awarding Senate tickets to the provincial parliamentary party to prevent horse-trading. However, he clarified that no ticket can be issued without Khan's personal approval. 'PTI remains committed to internal democracy and transparency,' he affirmed.

The accused, all residents of Secunderabad, were found carrying 1.8kg ganja. A follow-up led to the arrest of their Nagpur-based supplier. The patrol team flagged the trio to stop after spotting them loitering in a zone known for high footfall but no late-night activity. Senior PI Pankaj Bondse from the Pratap Nagar police station told TOI that the supplier picked up ganja from another one from Mominpura. "They are not highly educated. One of these is illiterate, while the others have studied till 7th and 9th grade," he said and added that they are newbies and have a clean record. All four have been charged under Sections 8(a), 20(b), and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. They have been handed over to Pratap Nagar police for further legal action. The operation was led by PI Amol Deshmukh and PSI Sachin Bhonde, under the supervision of Additional CP (Crime) Vasant Pardeshi, DCP (Detection) Rahul Maknikar, and ACP Abhijit Patil. Further investigation is on to trace the source of the supply chain and identify more local links. Police suspect that it wasn't the gang's first drop in the city.

Gold Price Today: Yellow metal down 7% from record high on MCX, spot gold hits five-week low; Check key support levels

Gold prices erased early losses to steady on Thursday, helped by a weaker dollar and technical buying as investors await key U.S. economic data later in the day for further clarity on future interest rates. Spot gold was little changed at $3,179.07 an ounce as of 1102 GMT, after hitting its lowest since April 10 earlier in the session. U.S. gold futures fell 0.3% to $3,179.20. The dollar index slipped 0.3%, making gold cheaper for other currency holders. The U.S. and China this week agreed to temporarily slash harsh reciprocal tariffs, de-escalating a trade war and denting demand for gold as a safe haven. On Thursday, focus will turn to U.S. producer price index data due at 1230 GMT after softer-than-expected consumer data earlier this week. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech later in the day will be watched for clues on the Fed's rate path. Markets are expecting 50 basis points of rate cuts this year, with the reductions expected to start from October. Non-yielding gold tends to thrive in a low-rate environment. Elsewhere, spot silver dipped 0.4% to $32.09 an ounce and palladium rose 0.6% to $956.58. Platinum was up 0.7% at $982.53. The palladium market, which was in deficit in 2012-2024, will move into balance this year, with demand falling by 6% as a result of lower production of gasoline vehicles, a major industrial use of the metal, and increased recycling in China, Johnson Matthey said in a report. Rahul Kalantri, VP Commodities, Mehta Equities Ltd. Gold prices declined sharply on Wednesday, touching a five-week low, while silver also traded lower. The drop is attributed to profit-taking and liquidation by weaker hands. Meanwhile, a shift toward riskier assets in the broader market continues to pressure safe-haven demand. Today, gap down opening is expected amid Iran's Supreme leader said to sign nuclear deal with US if all economic sanctions are lifted. However, weakness in the dollar index and uncertainty over long-term trade deal between U.S. and other nations could support metal prices at lower levels. Gold has support at $3130-3100 while resistance at $3200-3220. Silver has support at $31.75-31.55 while resistance is at $32.30-32.65. In INR gold has support at Rs91,350-90,780 while resistance at Rs92,450-92,690. Sliver has support at Rs94,380-93,550 while resistance at Rs95,950-96,750.
