Chris Brown Pleads Not Guilty To London Assault; Faces Additional Weapon Charge
Last Updated: Chris Brown pleaded not guilty to an assault charge over an alleged bottle attack at a London nightclub in 2023. He appeared at Southwark Crown Court. American R&B singer Chris Brown appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, where he pleaded not guilty to an assault charge stemming from a nightclub incident in London two years ago. Brown is accused of intentionally and maliciously attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm on Abraham Diaw with a bottle at the Tape Nightclub in Mayfair on February 19, 2023. The Grammy winner confirmed his identity in court before entering his plea, saying simply, 'Not guilty ma'am," as reported by PA Media . Alongside Brown, co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu, a U.S. citizen who turned 39 on the day of the hearing, also pleaded not guilty to the same alleged offense. Both are further charged with assault causing actual bodily harm for Diaw, and Brown faces an additional count of carrying an offensive weapon—a bottle—in a public space. No pleas were entered for those charges, and a follow-up court date has been scheduled for July 11 . A crowd of about 20 spectators, including several Chris Brown fans, were present in the court's public gallery . Brown was arrested by the Metropolitan Police on the morning of May 15 at Manchester's Lowry Hotel, before being released on conditional bail from HMP Forest Bank in Salford on May 21 . Despite the legal proceedings, the 36-year-old singer continues his international tour and is scheduled to perform at London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend. Christopher Maurice Brown, born on May 5, 1989, is an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and actor known for blending R&B with pop and hip-hop. His smooth vocals and dynamic dance style have often drawn comparisons to Michael Jackson, and many in the industry have dubbed him the 'King of R&B." His music explores a mix of emotional vulnerability and party themes. Brown launched his music career after signing with Jive Records in 2004. His self-titled debut album arrived in 2005 and went triple platinum, powered by the chart-topping single 'Run It!"—making him the first male artist since 1995 to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. His second album, Exclusive (2007), was another global hit and included the No. 1 single 'Kiss Kiss." In 2009, Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault involving then-girlfriend Rihanna. He received five years of probation and was sentenced to community service. That same year, he released Graffiti, which underperformed commercially. However, he rebounded in 2011 with F.A.M.E., his first Billboard 200 No. 1 album, featuring hits like 'Yeah 3x," the diamond-certified 'Look at Me Now," and 'Beautiful People." The album earned him a Grammy for Best R&B Album. He followed it up with Fortune in 2012, which also debuted at No. 1. (With inputs from ANI) First Published: June 22, 2025, 11:21 IST

Brown, 36, pleaded not guilty in Southwark Crown Court to one count of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. Brown's friend and fellow musician Omololu Akinlolu, 38, who performs under the name 'Hoody Baby,' pleaded not guilty to the same charge. Prosecutors said Brown and Akinlolu assaulted producer Abe Diaw at a bar in the Tape nightclub in the swanky Mayfair neighborhood in February 2023. Brown allegedly launched an unprovoked attack on Diaw and hit him several times with a bottle and then punched and kicked him. The attack was caught on surveillance camera in front of a club full of people, prosecutors said. Brown was released last month on 5 million-pound ($6.75 million) bail, which allowed him to start his world tour earlier this month. Brown, who burst onto the music scene as a teen in 2005, won his first Grammy for best R&B album in 2011 for 'F.A.M.E.' and then earned his second in the same category for '11:11 (Deluxe)' earlier this year. His hits include songs such as 'Run It,' 'Kiss Kiss' and 'Without You.' His tour is due to kick off June 8 in Amsterdam before starting North America shows in July. © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
