Umno leaders ignorant of MA63: Ruslan
Published on: Monday, July 21, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 21, 2025 By: Iskandar Dzulkifli Text Size: Ruslan criticised those who equate Sabah with other states, saying it reflects ignorance of the formation of Malaysia. PAPAR: Umno's Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan should not belittle the 'Sabah for Sabahan' (S4S) slogan by equating Sabah to other states in Malaysia when the Malaysia Agreement clearly held that both Bornean states are partners and not states of Malaya. Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Vice President Datuk Ruslan Muharam said that S4S symbolises the aspirations of the people of Sabah who want to see the state progress and prosper under the leadership of its own people, while still valuing cooperation with the Federal Government. Advertisement 'S4S is a reflection of reality, not mere political rhetoric. It embodies the spirit of Sabahans' struggle for their rights and privileges as outlined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),' Ruslan said during the launch of the G-NIUS e-Tuition programme. He stressed that Ahmad should be more aware and respectful of Sabahans' sensitivities, and not undermine S4S, which represents the rights and dignity of the people of Sabah. Ahmad, who is also the Head of Umno's Central War Room Secretariat, recently said that the slogan 'Malaysia for Sabah' (M4S) is more inclusive than S4S. The Pontian MP argued that M4S implies that Sabahans are not only for Sabah but are part of a greater Malaysian identity shared with the other 14 states. In response, Ruslan reiterated that Sabah is not just a state but one of the three founding regions of Malaysia, alongside Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, under the MA63 agreement. Ruslan, who is also the Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister of Sabah, criticised those who equate Sabah with other states, saying it reflects ignorance of the formation of Malaysia. 'Sabah is a region, not an ordinary state. Its status is unique and special, alongside Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, in forming this country as stipulated in MA63, in line with the 2022 constitutional amendment. Therefore, all parties should acknowledge this fact, and respect the history and spirit of the agreement which laid the foundation of modern-day Malaysia,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Samalaju Port pioneers Smart Barrier Gates in major step toward fully automated operations
Majang (centre) cuts the ribbon to launch the event, as Ruslan (fourth right) and others look on. SAMALAJU (July 17): Samalaju Industrial Port Sdn Bhd (SIPSB) leads the way as Sarawak's first seaport terminal to implement Smart Barrier Gates powered by cutting-edge technology, said Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad president and chief executive officer Ruslan Abdul Ghani. This achievement marked a significant milestone in the digital transformation of Bintulu Port Group, Ruslan said during the official launch of Smart Barrier Gates on Wednesday. 'This is one of the low-hanging fruits from our digital agenda and a reflection of our commitment to technological excellence and operational efficiency,' he added. The event was officiated by Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Dato Majang Renggi. He said the Smart Barrier Gate System, a key part of SIPSB's push towards automation and digitalisation, is designed to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and security at the port's entry points. The system integrates four core technologies into a single seamless ecosystem. 'The Optical Character Recognition (OCR) will automatically read and interpret container numbers, eliminating manual input and reducing processing time by up to 80 per cent,' he said. According to Ruslan, the Artificial Image Recording (AIR) uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to boost the accuracy of cargo identification, ensuring compliance with international standards. While the License Plate Recognition (LPR) enables secure, automated vehicle access for a smoother user experience, the fourth feature – Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) – enhances access control through secure, automated user identification. 'This achievement represents our unwavering commitment to innovation and our vision of creating a truly smart port environment that will set new standards – and this is just the first step,' Ruslan said. He also revealed that the Smart Barrier Gate System is only the beginning of a broader digital transformation roadmap for Bintulu Port Group. Ruslan said upcoming initiatives include the Port Operating System (POS), Smart CCTV with AI capability, nested drones, Digital Tally, and a next-generation Vessel Traffic Management Information System (VTMIS). 'Ultimately, we are going to have an Integrated Operation Centre (IOC),' he added. Ruslan also emphasised the port's vision to implement full-fledged automation, an initiative that no other port in Malaysia has fully undertaken. He said a recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the group to implement the automation further cements their path towards making this a reality. 'This creates an intelligent port environment that enhances our security protocols, improves our service delivery to valued customers and stakeholders, and positions us at the forefront of logistics innovation,' he explained. 'As digitalisation becomes increasingly vital in global trade, the steps taken by Samalaju Industrial Port and by extension Bintulu Port Group, solidify their position as regional leaders in technological innovation and operational excellence, paving the way for future advancements in Sarawak's maritime sector and beyond.' How did Ukraine manage to modernize and evacuate its An-124 100 Ruslan Condor amidst war with Russia? Details inside
Ukraine not only managed to hide and protect its Antonov An-124 100 Ruslan (NATO reporting name Condor) from Russian forces for over three years but also carried out the aircraft's modernization before safely flying it out of the country to Germany. The huge plane took off on July 11 from the Svyatoshino airport in Kiev and reached Leipzig in Germany a few hours later, escaping the Russian air defence and fighter jets patrolling the skies of Ukraine. Five days after the An-124 100 Ruslan landed safely in Leipzig, far away from the reach of Russian military, its owners ANTONOV Airlines on July 16 released details of why the plane was moved out of Ukraine. The company also revealed what happened while it was parked at an airport in Ukraine. The ANTONOV Airlines post reads: "Modernized AN-124-100 Ruslan aircraft successfully relocated from Ukraine to Germany." "ANTONOV has completed a complex multi-year project to deeply modernize one of its legendary transport aircraft An-124-100. On July 11, 2025, Ruslan was safely moved to Germany. This aircraft, manufactured in 1994, has over 21,000 flight hours and over 5,500 flights. Work on its deeply modernized aircraft began in 2021. The goal of the modernization, carried out by the JSC ANTONOV team, is to replace the main components that were manufactured in russia with modern components of Western and Ukrainian production." "Due to the full-scale aggression of Russia in 2022, the work was partially suspended: at that time the aircraft was in a disassembled state. However, even in the most difficult conditions of the war, the team of JSC "ANTONOV" was able to resume work and complete the modernization in June 2025. The relocation of "Ruslan" became not just a technical solution, but a symbol of the stability, professionalism and unity of Ukrainian aircraft manufacturers. The improved "Ruslan" will continue to fly and serve Ukraine on the international route. Currently, the aircraft fleet of JSC "ANTONOV" is in safe conditions, in accordance with internal safety protocols," the statement added. The An-124 100 Ruslan with tail number UR-82073 had the words "Be brave like Irpin" painted on its fuselage. The reference was to the brutal battle between Ukrainian forces and Russian units along Irpin River in the early days which finally resulted in the latter failing in their push to take over Kiev. Also Read: Big worry for Tesla: China's Huawei shocks auto industry with 3,000 km EV battery that charges in just 5 minutes As soon as the Ruslan was spotted over Kiev on July 11, it created a huge buzz as the Russian invasion had ensured that only military airplanes apart from a few government and recuse flights were operating in the region. Russian forces had already destroyed the Hostemel Airport near Kiev in the initial days of the war as well as the An-225 Mriya, the world's biggest aircraft at that time. But the aircraft which fled to Germany survived the attacks as it was moved to Antonov's repair facility in Kiev. An-124 aircraft have been used by Ukraine, the United States of America and several western nations for military cargo. They have also helped in carrying western weapon systems from NATO countries to Ukraine to fight off the Russian invasion. Manufactured in Ukraine, the An-124s have been a source of pride although they have used many Russian systems. But as explained by ANTONOV, the Ruslan has been modernized using western and Ukrainian components.

Details Emerge About An-124 Condor's Mystery Flight Through Kyiv's Restricted Airspace
The Antonov company today provided new details about its massive An-124-100 Ruslan (NATO reporting name Condor) cargo jet that mysteriously appeared in the highly restricted skies of Kyiv last week. The jet caused a stir because only military aircraft and limited government and rescue helicopter flights are allowed over Kyiv after Russia's full-on invasion. Since then, runways have been blocked to prevent Russian landing attempts and international transportation to and from the Ukrainian capital has been conducted by train. You can read more about the flight of the Condor in our original story here. Condors have been used by the U.S. and other nations to move military supplies, including weapons provided to Ukraine and other outsized loads. The jets, one of the world's largest aircraft, have been a source of pride in Ukraine, where they were manufactured. As we suspected, we now know that this particular aircraft, tail number UR-82073, flew from the Antonov repair facility in Kyiv to the company's new headquarters in Leipzig, Germany on Friday. The flight was launched after completion of a four-year modernization effort, the company explained on Facebook. That work began before the outbreak of the all-out invasion of Ukraine. You can see the jet taxi and take off from Kyiv and land to a water cannon salute in Leipzig in the following video. This Condor, built in 1994, had more than 21,000 flying hours over more than 5,500 flights when the Russians attacked on Feb. 24, 2022, according to Antonov. The goal of the repair work was to replace main components manufactured in Russia with more modern ones made in Ukraine and the West. When Russian forces tried to take Kyiv, the Condor was in a 'disassembled state,' Antonov noted. The company's headquarters and at least one Condor in relatively decent condition were destroyed at Hostemel Airport during the opening battle when the Russians tried to take the airfield as a staging ground to attack Kyiv. It was during this fight that the biggest aircraft in the world at the time, the beloved An-225 known affectionately as Mriya, and a direct cousin of the An-124, was also destroyed. However, UR-82073 was located at Antonov's repair facility in Kyiv and was spared destruction. Dmytro Antonov se dostal do hangáru v Hostomelu. Letadlo An-124 UR-82009 je také poškozeno. — flyRosťa (@flyrosta) April 1, 2022 Still, as a result of 'the full-scale aggression of Russia,' Antonov said it initially ordered a partial suspension of the modernization effort. However, the work ultimately continued. 'Even in the most difficult conditions of the war, the team of JSC 'ANTONOV' was able to resume work and complete the modernization in June 2025,' the company noted. As part of the refurbishing, the jet's livery included the phrase 'Be Brave Like Irpin' emblazoned under the cockpit. It is a reference to the pivotal fight along the Irpin River in the early days of the all-out war that helped keep the Russians from advancing into Kyiv. UR-82073 is one of a number of Condors owned and operated by Antonov Airlines, a subdivision of the company specializing in international cargo transportation. The AN-124-100 'can load shipments weighing up to 120,000kg (264,555lbs),' the company pointed out. 'However, two of Antonov Airlines' seven AN-124-100s have been modified to accept 150,000kg (330,693lbs) payloads.' Designated AN-124-100M, 'Antonov Airlines' modernized versions boast upgraded navigation systems (P-RNAV) and fully comply with the latest ICAO avionics and noise regulations, meaning that they can operate globally and without restriction,' the company added. When the modernization work was completed, UR-82073 took off for Germany, sparking curiosity and wonderment from surprised Ukrainians. Meanwhile, several Russian milbloggers expressed disgust that the Condor was not blown up on the ground or shot out of the sky. It is worth noting that any aircraft that large would have given off enough signatures for the Russians to easily spot it, at least if it climbed to higher altitudes (especially if no A-50 is up). Actually hotting it down is another challenge altogether. That the An-124 was able to take off from Kyiv and fly over Ukrainian airspace unscathed is a bone of contention for the popular Fighterbomber Telegram channel. 'A sad event, of course. For our intelligence first and foremost,' stated Figtherbomber on Friday. The channel is closely tied to Russian military aviation. 'The sad thing here is not that the An-124 arrived, but that it was able to leave intact and unharmed. It arrived, of course, at night, later, when our agents are asleep.' In the hours after UR-82073 flew over Kyiv, some Russian Telegram channels claimed it had flown out of Dnipro, ahead of an expected Russian advance. In our story about that flight, we noted it was 'most likely that the aircraft in question had been stranded in Ukraine since 2022 and took off from the Svyatoshino airport in Kyiv. That's the headquarters of the Antonov Serial Production Plant.' Satellite imagery obtained by The War Zone backed up this assertion. Taken July 2 by Planet Labs, the image shows that there was two relatively intact An-124s on the apron at the time. One in particular seems to have been active, with the aircraft moving to the runway on July 5th. On Wednesday, after Antonov officials revealed what really happened, they expressed pride in what they accomplished. 'The relocation of [the Condor] became not just a technical solution, but a symbol of the stability, professionalism and unity of Ukrainian aircraft manufacturers, the company proclaimed. The improved jet 'will continue to fly and serve Ukraine on the international route.'' The completion of the An-124's modernization work was a bright moment of hope for Ukrainians at a very difficult time. However, given the nature of the war, it may be quite some time before another Condor flight is spotted over Kyiv. Contact the author: howard@ Solve the daily Crossword

GFM Services acquires 60% of Shapadu Energy
KUALA LUMPUR: Integrated facilities management (IFM) services provider GFM Services Bhd signed a conditional share sale agreement with Shapadu Corporation Sdn Bhd to acquire a 60% equity interest in Shapadu Energy Sdn Bhd for RM30 million. The acquisition follows the signing of the heads of agreement by both parties in December 2024. GFM Services group managing director Ruslan Nordin said this acquisition is a strategic step forward in scaling up the company's O&G FM capabilities and scope. 'It represents a key milestone in the group's long-term strategy to strengthen and expand our presence in this high-value segment. 'By acquiring Shapadu Energy, we will gain access to an established customer base, resources, and expertise, particularly at the PIC under the Integrated Turnaround Main Mechanical & Maintenance Mechanical Static (TA4MS) contract,' he said in a statement. Shapadu Energy is involved in the oil & gas (O&G) downstream maintenance and turnaround services, as well as upstream maintenance, hook-up and commissioning activities. Through its subsidiary Shapadu CR Asia Sdn Bhd, it holds the TA4MS contract from Pengerang Refining Company Sdn Bhd and Pengerang Petrochemical Company Sdn Bhd—joint venture companies formed between Saudi Aramco and Petronas. The contract involves providing a plant turnaround services to Pengerang Refining and Pengerang Petrochemical at the Pengerang Refinery and Petrochemical Complex within the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) in Johor as needed. This complements GFM's own O&G arm via Highbase Strategic Sdn Bhd, which also holds a TA4MS contract from Petronas. The acquisition builds upon GFM's acquisition of Highbase in December 2023, which marked the group's entry into the O&G facilities maintenance (FM) sector. With both Highbase and Shapadu Energy operating under TA4MS contracts, the enlarged group will be well-positioned to grow its presence and participate more competitively in larger, more complex projects at the PIC. 'The combined capabilities of both entities are expected to unlock synergies across the enlarged group. These include increased market presence via strategic collaboration, as well as shared use of manpower and equipment, which may lead to cost rationalisation, improved operational efficiency, and stronger overall financial performance. 'We are confident that Shapadu Energy's skilled management team will strengthen our O&G segment, leveraging their industry expertise to drive growth and enhance operational performance,' Ruslan added. The strategic value of the acquisition is further supported by the robust financial performance of Shapadu Energy's subsidiary SCRA, which holds the TA4MS contract. Over the past three years, SCRA demonstrated consistent revenue growth from RM37.2 million in the financial year ended Dec 31, 2021 (FY21) to RM114.7 million in FY24, representing a 45% compound annual growth rate). Net profit also more than tripled from RM2.5 million in FY21 to RM8.8 million in FY24. This growth trajectory is expected to contribute positively to the group's profitability post-acquisition. Upon completion of the acquisition, GFM will hold a 60% equity interest in Shapadu Energy, while the remaining 40% will be retained by Shapadu Corporation. Consequently, Shapadu Energy will become a 60%-owned subsidiary of GFM and will remain an independently managed business unit under the group. GFM has also entered into a conditional Call Option Agreement, granting Shapadu Corporation the right to purchase a 15%-equity interest in Shapadu Energy for RM10 million. This option is exercisable within 24 months from the completion of the acquisition. The RM30 million acquisition will be satisfied entirely in cash. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the second half of 2025.
