Victorville man arrested for leaving "macabre teddy bear" at gas station, authorities say

Authorities have arrested the man who allegedly left a "macabre teddy bear" at a Victorville gas station over the weekend, prompting unnecessary calls for emergency service. They were called to the AMPM in the 13660 block of Bear Valley Road at around 12 p.m. after receiving a suspicious circumstances call, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department "Callers indicated a teddy bear made of what looked like human flesh was left in front of the business," said SBSD's statement on Monday. "Upon arriving, deputies located the teddy bear and began their investigation." Investigators took the bear into evidence, determining that it was not actually made of any human remains or skin, but rather manmade material, the statement said. On Monday, they announced that a man had been arrested in connection with the incident. Hector Corona Villanueva, 23, of Victorville, was arrested and booked for causing the report of an emergency while knowing it to be false and intentionally and wrongfully planting evidence to falsely present as real. "Incidents such as this take up valuable emergency resources and put the public at risk, possibly delaying response time to legitimate calls for service," deputies said.

85 Koi fish stolen from pond outside of San Bernardino County restaurant

One person has been arrested after more than seven dozen Koi fish were stolen from a pond in front of the Oak House Restaurant in Yucaipa over the weekend. It happened early Saturday morning on the restaurant property, which is located in the 34000 block of Yucaipa Boulevard, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. Investigators found that two male suspects entered the property and took 85 fish from the pond and fled from the area. "Through diligent investigative efforts, deputies tracked the suspect's vehicle to and from the scene, capturing crucial surveillance footage that led to the identification of the suspect," SBSD said. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Yucaipa man David Smith, was arrested when deputies executed a search warrant at his home. "Deputies recovered five of the stolen Koi fish along with additional evidence linking Smith to the crime," SBSD's release said. "The Koi fish have since been returned to their grateful owners." He was booked for grand theft and remains behind bars in lieu of $30,000 bail, deputies said. There was no information provided on the second suspect. Anyone who knows more is asked to contact SBSD investigators at (909) 918-2305.

3 killed in crash involving motorcyclist fleeing Southern California police

Three people in San Bernardino County, including two uninvolved people, were killed in a crash involving a motorcyclist reportedly attempting to flee sheriff's deputies, authorities confirmed to KTLA. The tragic incident unfolded at around 10:30 a.m. when deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the motorcyclist for reckless driving in Redlands. 'The driver of the motorcycle did not yield and fled from the deputies,' SBSD Public Information Officer Mara Rodriguez said in a statement to KTLA. 'The motorcycle driver collided [with] a vehicle on Redlands Boulevard near Tennessee Street.' All three individuals involved in the crash were declared deceased. In footage of the crash aftermath, what appears to be a black Toyota Prius is seen overturned in the street with a large number of deputies and medical personnel from the fire department at the scene. Debris from the crash littered the street and it appeared that items from inside the Toyota Prius had spilled out of the vehicle, either as a result of the impact or when crews extracted the victims. While the intersection was cordoned off as investigators worked at the scene, it's unclear where the motorcycle came to a stop after the high-speed crash. SBSD officials did not say whether deputies initiated a pursuit of the motorcycle driver, only that they attempted a traffic stop. Additionally, no information was provided on the ages or genders of those killed in the violent collision. PIO Rodriguez said that investigators with the California Highway Patrol are conducting an investigation into the incident. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Ranch Fire rapidly swells in Apple Valley

A brush fire in Apple Valley has grown to more than 1,500 acres Tuesday afternoon, likely prompting evacuations. The Ranch Fire began near Bowen Ranch Road and Roundup Way, fire officials said. The blaze had grown to 25 acres by about 2 p.m., with wind driving 'a rapid state of spread,' Cal Fire said on social media, though by 4:15, it was up to 1,533 acres. Original estimates said the fire had the potential to grow to 1,000 acres. A total of 10 engines, as well as other personnel, is on scene. Evacuations are anticipated, with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department's help requested. Fire officials said structures from 'Milpas Drive to High Road, South of Highway 18' face an immediate threat from the fire. Those in that area were asked to 'please evacuate safely and immediately' at 4:30 p.m., the SBSD said. A shelter has been set up at Sitting Bull Academy, 19445 Sitting Bull Road, Apple Valley. 'The Ranch Fire is producing smoke visible across surrounding areas, and residents are urged to remain alert and prepared,' the SBSD said on social media. 'We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates here as new information becomes available. Stay on this page for the latest official updates, evacuation notices, and safety instructions.' That smoke was clearly visible in video footage shared by ALERT California.
