Chinese schools in Sarawak may allow voluntary DLP testing, says association head

Chai speaks to reporters when met during a recent visit to SJKC Chung Hua Batu 11 in Matang recently. KUCHING (July 11): Chinese primary schools (SJKC) in Sarawak are considering allowing their pupils to sit for the Dual Language Programme (DLP) assessment on a voluntary basis, despite not being officially included in the national programme. Association of Aided Chinese Primary Schools in Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions president, Datuk Jonathan Chai, said the proposal is being explored as a means to gauge pupils' academic performance in Science and Mathematics. However, he cautioned that the results may not be fully representative. 'Since SJKC schools are not included in the DLP, any results obtained would serve more as an internal benchmark,' he said during a site visit to SJKC Chung Hua Batu 11 in Matang recently. Chai said that SJKC pupils may be allowed to take the test voluntarily within their own schools for self-assessment purposes. However, he added, full participation in the DLP would require formal approval from the Federal Education Ministry. 'At present, we continue using Mandarin as the primary medium of instruction for Science and Mathematics, as it remains the most effective approach for the majority of our students,' he noted. Chai also noted a shifting demographic, stating that approximately 40 per cent of pupils in SJKC schools now come from non-Chinese backgrounds, prompting a re-evaluation of the current language policy. While no final decision has been made, the association is actively engaging with stakeholders, including parents, educators and the broader community. 'We are also closely monitoring the outcomes of DLP assessments being carried out in national schools (SK),' he said. 'If those results show substantial improvement in students' performance, it may influence our next steps,' he added. Chai also remarked that earlier attempts to roll out DLP nationwide were hindered by inadequate preparation and support. 'If we're serious about improving English standards, we need to address the root cause – teacher capability,' he said. 'Short-term language programmes are insufficient. Effective language teaching requires long-term investment and properly-trained educators,' he stressed. While remaining cautious, the association remains open to initiatives that can enhance young learners' proficiency in English, without undermining their understanding of core subjects like Science and Mathematics.

QuickCheck: Did a riot break out after an auction in Pontian?

A 43-second video went viral on social media, capturing a chaotic scene with people throwing chairs at a stage. Observers claimed the commotion erupted when a public auction took a dramatic turn for the worse in a school hall in Pekan Nenas, Pontian. Is it true this dispute escalated into a full-blown brawl? Verdict: TRUE Police arrested 18 individuals, aged between 17 and 48, following the incident on Friday (July 4) at a SJKC school hall in Pekan Nanas, Pontian, around 11.30pm. Pontian OCPD Superintendent Mohammad Shofee Tayib said, "A team from the criminal investigation department rushed to the scene and found that the commotion was likely triggered by dissatisfaction over items offered at the auction, which was organised by a temple. All proceeds from the sold items were said to be donated to the temple and were not channelled to any groups.' He noted that the detained individuals have been remanded until July 9 to help with ongoing investigations. 'A case file has been opened under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons,' said Superintendent Mohammad Shofee. He added that the case is also being probed under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief. 'Police would not compromise with any criminal acts,' he stressed, advising the public not to circulate unverified videos or details of the altercation. He urged anyone with information related to the incident to call the Pontian district police headquarters hotline at 07-686 9999. Source: The Police

Police arrest couple for allegedly abusing 11-year-old daughter

ARAU: A couple was arrested early this morning at their home in Taman Desa Saujana here for allegedly abusing their 11-year-old daughter since 2023. Arau police chief Supt Ahmad Mohsin Md Rodi said the 37-year-old husband and wife were detained at 1.30am after the Perlis Social Welfare Department (JKM) received a public complaint about suspected physical abuse. According to initial investigations, the most recent incident is believed to have occurred at about noon yesterday when the girl was allegedly caned on her back by her father for misbehaving. 'JKM received the tip-off via its hotline around 12.15pm yesterday. It was reported that the child had been physically abused by her biological parents,' he said in a statement today. Later that night, a JKM child protection officer visited the house at 10.40pm and took the girl, a pupil at a Chinese vernacular school (SJKC) in Kangar, to the Arau Children's Home to facilitate further investigation. A medical examination at Tuanku Fauziah Hospital (HTF) in Kangar revealed injuries on the victim's head, lips, chest, right ribs, back, arms, and legs – believed to be caused by blunt force and exposure to hot water. 'The girl had both old and recent injuries and has been referred to the hospital's Paediatric Unit for further treatment,' he added. The couple has been remanded for six days beginning today to assist with the investigation under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.

Weak BM in vernacular schools requires urgent action

COMMENT | Bahasa Melayu (BM) is Malaysia's national and official language. It serves as a vital bridge connecting citizens of diverse ethnic backgrounds and is the primary medium for official communication and education. However, a growing concern remains: to what extent is BM truly understood and mastered by students in vernacular schools such as Chinese private secondary schools (SMPC), Chinese national-type primary schools (SJKC), and Tamil national-type primary schools (SJKT)? Although BM is a compulsory subject in all schools, numerous studies reveal that...
