NGT seeks new systems for debris removal along Kochi backwaters, coastline

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has asked the Department of Local Self-Government, Kerala State Pollution Control Board, and the Ernakulam District Collector to file a report on the possibility of deploying modern equipment, including sea bins and amphibious waste removal systems, for the effective removal of floating debris from the backwaters and coastal waters. The Southern Bench of the tribunal made the recommendation while considering the case pertaining to the impact of garbage pile-ups on the tourism potential of the Fort Kochi coastline. An order dated June 20,2025 issued by Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana, Judicial Member, and Dr. Satyagopal Korlapati, Expert Member, stated that the Ernakulam District Collector and the Kochi Corporation had not yet filed their reports on garbage deposits along the Fort Kochi beach and its premises. The Bench has posted the matter for the next hearing on August 14, 2025. Besides the Kerala State Pollution Control Board, the Kochi Corporation and the District Collector, the tribunal had included the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) as respondent in the case. In a report dated March 17, 2025, the CPCB had informed the Bench that it was the responsibility of the Kerala State Pollution Control Board, the Kochi Corporation and the Ernakulam district administration to initiate necessary action against the garbage pile-up along the Fort Kochi beach in Ernakulam. As per the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, it is the duty of the local authorities to facilitate the construction, maintenance, and operation of solid waste processing facilities and associated infrastructure. Local bodies and panchayats were entrusted with the primary responsibility of collection and management of municipal solid waste, maintenance and operation of the solid waste processing sites and dumping yards, it said. It is the duty of the State Urban Affairs department to ensure the implementation of provisions of the SWM rules by all the local authorities. The State pollution control boards are also entrusted with the responsibility of issuing authorisation to the local bodies after examining the proposals related to waste management, according to the report. The Kochi Corporation had submitted a report before the State Pollution Control Board on March 14, 2025 stating that the waste pile-up along the beach had been removed.

Monsoon covers India nine days ahead of schedule; IMD warns of heavy rain, flash flood risk

NEW DELHI: The Southwest Monsoon fully covered the entire nation on June 29, earlier than the normal date of July 8. This marks the fourth-earliest arrival of Southwest Monsoon (SWM) winds across the country in the past 26 years. Last year, the monsoon covered the whole country on July 2. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the SWM arrived nine days earlier than its typical completion date. Additionally, it reached the country eight days ahead of schedule, on June 1. The IMD also predicted above-normal rainfall for the country, expecting over 108% of the Long Period Average (LPA) from June to September. This increase in rainfall is likely to boost the sowing of Kharif crops and help ease food inflation in the coming months. Data shows that in the last 26 years, the monsoon covered the entire country in June in the years 2013 and 2016 (June 16), 2018 (June 29), and 2005 (June 30). Furthermore, in the past 26 years, there have been four instances when the monsoon coverage dates for Delhi and the entire nation coincided. These occurred in 2020 (June 26), 2018 (June 29), 2015 (June 26), and 2005 (June 30). The IMD stated that the monsoon further advanced into the remaining parts of Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and the entire Delhi region on June 29, 2025. It has forecast heavy rainfall activity likely to continue over many parts of Northwest, Central, East, and Northeast India during the next seven days, with isolated extremely heavy falls expected over Jharkhand on June 29 and 30, and Odisha on June 29. The prediction of heavy rainfall may cause a flash flood risk over several watersheds in southern and eastern Himachal Pradesh, across Uttarakhand, and parts of West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, including the Yamunanagar district, in the next 24 hours. Additionally, the IMD has issued a flash flood warning for North Odisha, southern West Bengal, and adjoining areas of Jharkhand.

Any establishment, be it a hotel, restaurant, hospital, RWA, AOA, etc, that generates more than 100 kgs of waste per day falls under the BWG category and is obligated to set up an on-site composting unit," he said. Under the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2016, bulk generators are required to treat their wet waste on-site. During the workshop, instructions were given on how to segregate waste into different categories like wet waste, dry waste, hazardous waste, medical waste, etc. According to estimates, Noida generates nearly 800 tons of solid waste per day, out of which nearly 30% originates from BWG premises.

CM flying squad to probe MCM sanitation contract

Gurgaon: The CM flying squad has initiated an investigation into MCM's sanitation contract with Akanksha Enterprises, demanding documents such as tender details, contractor payments, and supervision records. The probe follows MCM's recent Rs 9.2 crore penalty on the contractor for inadequate service delivery. The contract, initially valid till Feb 2025, was extended to May. "A letter was sent to the MCM officials seeking details of the contract so that the CM flying squad could probe the matter. The civic body was given a week's time to probe the matter," said a ULB official privy to the matter. The contractor submitted an invoice of Rs 13.2 crore for services rendered during these three months. The representative of Akanksha Enterprises, Shishpal Rana, could not be reached despite repeated attempts by TOI. In April, the company also faced a Rs 4.3 crore penalty, during which they alleged bribery among senior MCM officials and payment delays, leading to the transfer of the then MCM commissioner. A sanitation standing committee reviewed the work of the agency between Feb 20, 2025, and May 19, 2025. A meeting was held on June 4 when the committee recommended deducting over Rs 9.17 crore from the agency's Rs 13.17 crore bill, approving only Rs 3.9 crore for payment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo According to state govt-sanctioned estimates derived from central public health and environment engineering standards (SWM manual of CPPHEO norms, 20216) and the project's request for proposal (RFP), the agency was required to supply 1,997 personnel, 96 tractor trolleys, 468 rickshaw carts, and four earthmovers for sweeping roads in the MCM area. The urban local bodies (ULB) department stipulated that all SWM payments would be processed via the SWM monitoring portal starting Jan 2025. The committee observed a significant gap between the actual deployment figures shown on the SWM portal. It revealed personnel shortfalls of 1,315 in Feb, 1,355 in March, 1,533 in April, and 1,284 in May. Regarding equipment deployment, the committee's review showed that the agency provided only 101 rickshaw carts instead of the required 468 and merely 38 tractor trolleys against the specified 94, indicating substantial shortages in equipment provision for their work in the MCM area for three months.

Top 7 sales boss Henry Tajer exits just six months in job

Don't miss out on the headlines from TV. Followed categories will be added to My News. Seven is searching for a new head of sales following the exit of its chief commercial officer Henry Tajer after six months in the role. Mr Tajer was appointed to Seven's most senior sales role in January following a radical restructure of Seven's corporate structure last year leading to the departure of seasoned Seven executives including advertising chief Kurt Burnette in June 2024. On Monday Seven confirmed Mr Tajer will transition from his full-time role into a consulting arrangement from the end of the month. Seven West Media managing director and CEO Jeff Howard praised Mr Tajer in Monday's announcement saying: 'Henry brought a new level of bold and innovative thinking to Seven's sales team. He drove significant change in his short time at Seven and on behalf of the entire team, I would like to thank him for his contribution. I look forward to continuing to work with Henry on opportunities to drive growth for SWM.' Seven is searching for a new head of sales following the exit of Henry Tajer. Picture: NewsWire / Martin Ollman Mr Tajer initially joined Seven as a consultant in August 2024 before becoming Seven's full-time CCO in January 2025, a role that saw him put on a lucrative contract at Seven. His predecessor Mr Burnette had been on $1.25 million a year at the time of his departure. Mr Tajer said of his departure from Seven that it would allow him to transition back to consulting work while allowing him to focus on the 'many exciting opportunities still ahead for Seven' as a consultant. The Seven sales team will be jointly led by Mr Tajer's former direct reports, Katie Finney, Seven's national TV sales director and national digital sales director Jordan King while a search is conducted for Mr Tajer's replacement. In May reported Mr Tajer's appointment at Seven had been the result of a decade of lobbying for a top sales job in Australian television. The Seven sales team will be led by Katie Finney until a replacement for Mr Tajer can be found. Sources claimed he ultimately won over Seven chairman Kerry Stokes and son Ryan Stokes, non-executive director of Seven's board, leading to his appointment in January. Mr Tajer's aggressive and at times unconventional style has drawn critics internally and externally in recent years. He arrived at Seven following a string of short-lived roles. Prior to consulting for Seven he was CEO of The Influence Group for a year until June 2023. His previous role at marketing company Dentsu Aegis also lasted one year and saw Mr Tajer ruffle feathers. He also made headlines in adland in 2017 after exiting his role as Global CEO of IPG Mediabrands – a role he relocated his family from Australia to New York two years earlier in 2015 to fill. Mr Tajer's departure follows the recent exit of Seven's 'rookie' news boss Anthony De Ceglie after a controversial year at the broadcaster.
