Meet Sachin Katti, the IIT Bombay grad leading AI, tech and now strategy at Intel
In the ever-evolving world of semiconductors and artificial intelligence, few stories are as remarkable as that of Sachin Katti. From a childhood in Belagavi, Karnataka, to becoming Intel's new chief technology officer and chief AI officer, Katti's journey has been noteworthy. His appointment, effective April 18, 2025, comes at a time when Intel is not only restructuring its leadership but also betting big on AI as a core pillar of its future. Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who succeeded Pat Gelsinger after internal disagreements, is steering Intel through turbulent times – including job cuts, strategic realignments, and the closure of key divisions. Within this landscape, Katti has been chosen to lead the company's AI and technology strategy, a role that positions him at the very centre of Intel's academic journey began at St. Xavier's High School and later at IIT Bombay, where he earned his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering in 2003. This was just the start. He went on to pursue his Master's and PhD at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where his doctoral work earned him the prestigious George Sprowls Award. "AI is top-of-mind with our telco customers, as it is with everyone else in the world."How is Intel delivering in the AI space for the telco industry? Hear from Sachin Katti, Intel SVP & GM, Network and Edge Group #MWC25 : Intel News (@intelnews) March 4, 2025Perhaps one of Katti's most celebrated breakthroughs came not in a boardroom, but in a Stanford lab. As a professor at Stanford University, he led a team that developed in-band full-duplex radios, which are basically wireless systems capable of transmitting and receiving on the same frequency at the same time. This was something engineers had struggled with for over a century. His work didn't just stay in academic journals. Katti co-founded Kumu Networks to commercialise the technology, securing over $25 million in funding and running successful trials with global telecom giants like Deutsche Telekom and While Kumu eventually wound down in late 2024, the innovation it brought to wireless communications lives on. Katti's work on full-duplex radios has the potential to cut spectrum usage in half, which brings with it the benefit of multi-trillion-dollar implications for global important is Katti's passion for openness. In 2016, he co-founded the xRAN Forum, which later evolved into the O-RAN Alliance. As co-chair of its Technical Steering Committee, Katti helped dismantle the industry's reliance on closed, proprietary telecom infrastructure, promoting standardisation and competition. This ethos of openness mirrors Intel's current battle against Nvidia's tightly controlled CUDA ecosystem, making Katti a natural choice for the 2016, Katti also co-founded another startup called Uhana, which applied artificial intelligence to optimise mobile networks. VMware acquired the company in 2019, and Katti joined as Vice President of Telco & Edge Strategy. He then moved to Intel in 2021, rising quickly through the ranks – from CTO of its Network and Edge Group to General Manager, and now, Chief Technology and AI will now oversee Intel Labs, the company's product roadmap, and manage its startup and developer ecosystem engagements. His elevation marks a shift in how Intel views AI, not as a side project embedded within its data centre business, but as a core function deserving dedicated appointment also follows the retirement of Greg Lavender, the previous CTO who had followed Gelsinger from VMware. The shake-up is part of CEO Lip-Bu Tan's vision to flatten Intel's hierarchy and bring product development closer to the top. For the first time, Intel's key chip divisions will report directly to this transition comes with its challenges. Last week, Intel announced major layoffs with over 100 jobs at its Santa Clara headquarters alone, with broader global cuts affecting up to 20 percent of its workforce. The company also shut down its automotive division, laying off most of the employees in the unit. Engineering roles, from chip designers to software architects, are being impacted. The company is even outsourcing parts of its marketing operations to Accenture, with AI set to play a significant role in automating customer Katti, being part of this shift is more than a personal milestone. It places him alongside a growing cohort of Indian-origin leaders shaping global technology, from Satya Nadella at Microsoft, Sundar Pichai at Google, and more recently Trapit Bansal who has joined Meta's superintelligence team.- Ends

Chief Strategy Officer Safroadu Yeboah‑Amankwah will depart on June 30, 2025. He will pass his strategic duties on to Sachin Katti, who will take on expanded oversight as Intel focuses on AI and data-center innovation. The leadership shake‑up arrives just weeks before the company begins cutting up to 20% of its global workforce, including over 100 roles at its Santa Clara headquarters and a full wind‑down of the automotive chip division. As Intel accelerates its pivot back to core chipmaking, a key strategist's departure underscores this transformation's high-stakes nature. Stay tuned to learn how this could shape Intel's future trajectory. The report states that Intel submitted a notice under California's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. A 60-day notice period or a four-week notice period with nine weeks of pay and benefits will be given to impacted employees, the business said in the filing. "As we announced earlier this year, we are taking steps to become a leaner, faster, and more efficient company," an Intel representative told the outlet in a statement. Intel makes new appointments in bid to be more engineering-focused
Intel recently hired three chip industry executives for roles in engineering and networking in an effort to overhaul top management. These comprise a part of CEO Lip-Bu Tan's plans turn around the embattled chipmaker by trimming the company's large workforce, hiring new leadership, focusing on customer satisfaction and ensuring the foundry business succeeds. Tan started to flatten Intel's leadership team since taking over as top boss in March with many important chip groups reporting directly into him, including sales veteran Greg Ernst, who was appointed chief revenue officer. Ernst previously served as Intel's head of U.S. sales and marketing operations. In keeping with its plans to become more engineering-focused, the company also tapped Srinivasan Iyengar, Jean-Didier Allegrucci and Shailendra Desai to lead engineering roles. 'Greg, Srini, J-D and Shailendra are highly accomplished leaders with strong reputations across our ecosystem and they will each play important roles as we position our business for the future,' Tan said. Iyengar joined Intel from Cadence Design Systems and will lead a new customer engineering centre, while Allegrucci, a former Rain AI executive, will manage the development of the AI System on Chip engineering. Desai, who joined Intel from Google, will head the development of new AI chip architectures. Iyengar will report into Tan, while Allegrucci and Desai will report into Sachin Katti, Intel's chief technology and AI officer. Source: Reuters Image Credit: Stock Image/Intel
