Samsung's latest foldable OLED sets new benchmark, proves durable in 500,000-fold test

South Korean smartphone giant Samsung seems to be leading in the foldable OLED display market. The company, on Wednesday, July 23, announced that its latest foldable OLED panel stays intact even after a 500,000-fold durability test. The OLED panel was tested by Bureau Veritas, a certification company. Samsung Displays raised its internal durability testing standard from 200,000 to 500,000 folds, which is two times more than their previous benchmark. The OLED panel used for this testing is built into the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. This exceptional durability is made possible by the Samsung display's newly developed architecture that is shock resistant and is inspired by the core principles of bulletproof glass, which increases the lifespan of foldable devices. This test was conducted by Bureau Veritas, where they mentioned that over the span of 13 days at 25°C, the panel remained fully functional even after 500,000 folds. The lifespan of foldable smartphones is no longer limited by durability. 500,000 folds mean that the device could last about 10 years for those who, on average, fold 100 times a day and over six years for those folding more than 200 times per day. The company has opted for a titanium plate to support the display. They also added a new flattening structure to disperse shock uniformly throughout the panel. The titanium plate is more protective and has a smaller form factor than other materials because it is lighter and thinner while yet offering excellent strength. 'As foldable OLED enters its seventh year of commercialisation, we've achieved another meaningful breakthrough in both durability and design. This new panel not only builds consumer confidence in foldable OLED durability but also underscores the technological advantage that makes Samsung Display distinguished in the industry,' said Hojung Lee, executive vice president and head of the Mobile Display Product Planning Team at Samsung Display. As mentioned above, the new OLED panel is inspired by bulletproof glass. And, to build one, an individual would require several layers of reinforced glass and plastic sheets. The flexibility of the outer layer of glass absorbs a large portion of the impact energy when a bullet hits the surface, preventing penetration. This design concept is adopted in the OLED panel by applying a new high-elastic glue to every layer within its OLED screen and thickening its outermost UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) by 50%. Samsung Display implemented this idea, providing more than four times the recovery performance over the prior material. The panel's capacity to withstand external impact is greatly increased by these improvements.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 Display Can Be Folded 500,000 Times, According to Testing

Fold, fold and fold again. It doesn't matter how many times you fold the Galaxy Z Fold 7 open and closed -- it's highly unlikely to give out on you. Samsung Display (SDC) announced Tuesday that its latest foldable OLED panel "remained fully functional after a 500,000-fold durability test," more than doubling its previous benchmark of 200,000 folds. The company says this screen is the one you can find on Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 phone. Bureau Veritas, a French leader in testing, inspection, and certification, tested the screen with 500,000 folds over a 13-day period at a temperature of 25°C (77°F). For those of you trying to wrap your head around the math, half a million folds translates to the average user folding their phone 100 times a day for 10 years, or prolific users doing 200 folds a day for 6 years. Samsung Display -- a separate company from Samsung itself -- says the durability results prove that "durability is no longer a limiting factor in the lifespan of foldable smartphones." "As foldable OLED enters its seventh year of commercialization, we've achieved another meaningful breakthrough in both durability and design," Hojung Lee, EVP at Samsung Display, said in a press release. "This new panel... builds consumer confidence in foldable OLED durability." Bulletproof glass technology has helped Samsung Display develop its creaseless screens. SDC borrowed from the concept and increased the thickness of its Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) -- the outermost glass on the screen -- by 50%. SDC also added high-elastic adhesive to each screen layer, thereby enhancing fold recovery performance by four times the previous design. CNET reported last week that Apple has tapped Samsung Display to manufacture screens for Apple's first foldable iPhone, set to launch in summer 2026. With the era foldable phones upon us, these are the best ones in 2025.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 claim still puts it behind the competition

What's happened? Following the launch of the new Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung has now confirmed that its phone is capable of being open and shut 500,000 times over its lifetime. The new data, from Samsung Display, has been confirmed by Inspection and Bureau Veritas, which ensured it remained functional after the high number of folding cycles. Recommended Videos This number is a 150% improvement on the 200,000 folds that the Z Fold 6 was certified for, Why this matters: Foldable phones need to be made of a flexible OLED material, and opening and closing the phone will eventually cause the panel to degrade and break. This uprated ability means Samsung is claiming the phone will last 10 years for some users. Given the phone will only be supported for security upgrades for seven years, this means it should physically last its entire working life. Why should I care? The high cost of a foldable phone – especially the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which can cost well over $2,000 – means users will want it to last a very long time. 200,000 folds, the previous benchmark achieved by the Z Fold 6, has been an industry average for some time, and this focus on performance and durability is a good sign that the competition is ramping up in the foldable space. Companies are investing to show greater performance and outstrip rivals, which usually leads to better products for consumers. OK, what's next? We can expect 500,000 folds to become the benchmark for competitors seeking to dethrone Apple. However, the OnePlus Open was certified for 1,000,000 opens, so there's still a way to go for Samsung. Given this level of durability is likely to be enough for most people, the next focus will be on the glass used and the underlying framework. Improving these designs could allow for a crease-free design, and is rumored to be a key selling point for the much-vaunted iPhone Fold, tipped to launch next year.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 can survive half a million folds according to independent testing — and that's a massive upgrade

When it comes to the best foldable phones, one question often on people's minds is: just how many times can you unfold it before it breaks? It appears that we now have an answer when it comes to the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 was tested by Bureau Veritas (via Samsung Display's Newsroom), a global testing and certification company, According to its tests, the Z Fold 7 managed to remain fully functional for over 500,000 folding cycles (opening and closing the phone). According to Samsung Display, that would mean that the phone could be unfolded 100 times a day for over ten years, or six years if you unfolded it over 200 times a day. The way that Bureau Veritas tests these devices is by opening and closing the phone 13 times a day, while maintaining a steady temperature of 22 degrees Celsius, or 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is stated in the report to have managed 200,000 folding cycles, meaning that Samsung has improved the durability of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 by more than double for this particular test. The reason for this improved durability is down to several changes in the design of the phone's inner screen, which makes use of a multi-layer design of glass and plastic for its Ultra Thin Glass material. Samsung Display compares this to the design of bulletproof glass. Samsung achieved this by first increasing the thickness of the Ultra Thin Glass by 50% while also introducing a new high-elastic adhesive that better resists the wear caused by unfolding the phone. On top of that, the Z Fold 7 utilizes a new flattening structure and titanium plate to both support the display panel when open, and allow it to better distribute shock when it is struck. Galaxy Z Fold 7's display survives 500,000 folds, a massive leap over Fold 6 durability

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority TL;DR Samsung has announced that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 display can withstand 500,000 folds, double that of the Galaxy Z Fold 6. That means the Galaxy Z Fold 7 can endure over 10 years of daily use, assuming about 100 folds a day. The fold rating for the Fold 7's display comes from a test conducted by Bureau Veritas, a global testing and certification company Samsung Display has finally revealed what we've wanted to know for many days — how many folds can the Galaxy Z Fold 7 withstand? Well, it turns out not only is the Fold 7 one of the thinnest foldable phones on the market, but it is also shaping up to be one of the most durable when it comes to folding and unfolding capacity. According to Samsung Display, the foldable OLED panel used in the Galaxy Z Fold 7 can withstand a whopping 500,000 folds, more than double the durability rating of its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The fold rating comes from a test conducted by Bureau Veritas, a global testing and certification company, which confirmed that the panel remained fully functional even after 500,000 folding cycles under controlled conditions. Specifically, the panel was folded and unfolded over 13 days at a steady temperature of 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit). That means, in theory, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 should be able to endure over 10 years of daily use with 100 folds a day, or over six years for power users folding and unfolding their device more than 200 times per day. In comparison, last year's Galaxy Z Fold 6 was rated for 200,000 folds, which is pretty much the industry standard for foldable phones. Samsung Display says it has now raised its internal benchmark to 500,000, reflecting a significant leap in the durability of foldable screens. Samsung Display Samsung Display engineers took inspiration from bulletproof glass while creating the display for the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Bulletproof glass relies on multiple layers of glass and plastic films to absorb and disperse the energy from high-velocity impacts. Similarly, Samsung says it has applied a multi-layer shock-resistant structure to the new foldable OLED panel. Key upgrades in the panel include: A 50% thicker outer Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) layer to better absorb external pressure. A newly formulated high-elastic adhesive that binds the OLED layers and offers four times the recovery performance compared to previous materials. A flattening structure that spreads shock evenly across the display. A high-strength titanium plate backing the display. These changes not only make the Galaxy Z Fold 7's display more durable but also contribute to its slimmer and lighter design.
