Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 claim still puts it behind the competition

Digital Trends3 days ago
What's happened? Following the launch of the new Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung has now confirmed that its phone is capable of being open and shut 500,000 times over its lifetime.
The new data, from Samsung Display, has been confirmed by Inspection and Bureau Veritas, which ensured it remained functional after the high number of folding cycles.

This number is a 150% improvement on the 200,000 folds that the Z Fold 6 was certified for,
Why this matters: Foldable phones need to be made of a flexible OLED material, and opening and closing the phone will eventually cause the panel to degrade and break. This uprated ability means Samsung is claiming the phone will last 10 years for some users.
Given the phone will only be supported for security upgrades for seven years, this means it should physically last its entire working life.
Why should I care? The high cost of a foldable phone – especially the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which can cost well over $2,000 – means users will want it to last a very long time.
200,000 folds, the previous benchmark achieved by the Z Fold 6, has been an industry average for some time, and this focus on performance and durability is a good sign that the competition is ramping up in the foldable space. Companies are investing to show greater performance and outstrip rivals, which usually leads to better products for consumers.
OK, what's next? We can expect 500,000 folds to become the benchmark for competitors seeking to dethrone Apple. However, the OnePlus Open was certified for 1,000,000 opens, so there's still a way to go for Samsung.
Given this level of durability is likely to be enough for most people, the next focus will be on the glass used and the underlying framework. Improving these designs could allow for a crease-free design, and is rumored to be a key selling point for the much-vaunted iPhone Fold, tipped to launch next year.

Motorola is finally beating Samsung at its own game

Ryan Haines / Android Authority When you buy a smartphone in 2025, it's often rare that you pay the full MSRP of the phone you're looking at. Between trade-in deals, price discounts, store credits, and more, virtually every smartphone brand is always running some kind of promotion on its Android handsets. For years, Samsung has been one of the best at this game. Even for phones that are still in the pre-order phase or have just recently launched, it's not uncommon to find Samsung throwing in free storage upgrades, discounts on a smartwatch if you buy it with your new phone, etc., etc. But Motorola has quietly been catching up to Samsung in this regard for a while, and with its latest Razr Ultra promotion, Motorola has finally beat Samsung at its own game. Motorola Razr Ultra or Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7: Which one would you choose? 0 votes Motorola Razr Ultra NaN % Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 NaN % Motorola is coming for Samsung's value crown Ryan Haines / Android Authority If you've shopped for a Motorola phone in recent years, you've probably come across similar such deals on the company's website. Motorola is no stranger to quickly slashing price on its phones, and it hasn't been for some time. But while its discounts are often good, they never seem to be quite on the same level as Samsung's. However, that changed this week with a new deal for the Motorola Razr Ultra. Right now on Motorola's website, you can buy a 1TB Razr Ultra for the same price as the base 512GB storage model plus get a free Moto Watch Fit smartwatch with your order. That's a total value of $400 in savings, and that's without trading in your old phone — where Motorola is currently offering an extra $200 on top of your phone's normal trade-in value. So, if you traded in a 128GB iPhone 15 Pro, you could get a 1TB Razr Ultra (plus the Moto Watch Fit) for just $650 — a combo that would normally cost $1,700. Joe Maring / Android Authority How's that compare to Samsung? At the time of writing (currently during Z Flip 7 pre-orders), Samsung is also offering a free storage upgrade (from 256GB to 512GB) along with enhanced trade-in values. Using the iPhone 15 Pro as an example once again, trading that into Samsung would net you a 512GB Galaxy Z Flip 7 for $700. That's $50 more than the Motorola deal, and you're getting half the storage and no free smartwatch. While this is just one example, I think it's an important one to call out. It's easy to point at Samsung as the value king for smartphone deals and promos, and while the company is certainly still doing well here, Motorola beating Samsung in this department — even in just one scenario — is significant. It's especially noteworthy in this example considering the stark similarities between the Razr Ultra and Z Flip 7. These are the two best flip-phone foldables available in the US today, and for Motorola to edge out Samsung like this is impressive. If I were in the market for a new flip-phone and had these two deals to choose from, I know which one I'd pick, and it wouldn't be Samsung. This is good for everyone Ryan Haines / Android Authority Aggressive smartphone deals like this are important. Not only are are they good ways to save you a few bucks on your next purchase, but they also put pressure on competitors to follow suit. It's widely known that Samsung traditionally has among the best smartphone promos, but a deal as good as this Razr Ultra one can shift that narrative. It can put Motorola on people's radar in a way that the company wasn't previously, and in turn, Samsung may up its game with its next Z Flip 7 promotion. Whether you're a Moto or a Samsung fan, everyone wins. Beyond that big picture view, it's also just nice to see Motorola make a phone like the Razr Ultra so accessible. The Razr Ultra is one of our best-reviewed phones of the year, with one of our only complaints being its steep price. For that to no longer be an issue is pretty commendable. Now, is this something we'll see more of from Motorola? While we can't say for sure, I certainly hope so — and I think we will. To out-value one of the best Android brands in the business is no small feat, and this Razr Ultra deal is clear Motorola knows how to do it. Motorola Razr Ultra Motorola Razr Ultra Blisteringly fast charging and excellent battery life • Ultra-flagship-tier performance • Top-notch materials and eye-catching Pantone colors MSRP: $1,299.99 High-end processing power in a folding shell Adding Ultra to the name, the Motorola Razr Ultra is the first folding phone from Moto with a top-tier processor. The 7-inch folding display is paired with a half-size front display to give you both a premium experience, and a compact and portable communication device. New study reveals Galaxy Z Fold 7 is thinner than claimed, but bad news for rivals

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority TL;DR A Korean study has revealed that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is thinner than actually claimed. The study also found that other recent book-style foldables were thicker than advertised. This comes after reports that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 was thinner than the HONOR Magic V5, which claims to be the thinnest foldable. HONOR says the Magic V5 is the world's thinnest foldable phone, but the company uses a dubious measurement method to make this claim. Now, a Korean study has shown that all recent book-style foldable phones, bar the Galaxy Z Fold 7, are actually thicker than claimed. The Korean Consumer-Centered Enterprise Association (via Business Korea) measured a variety of recent foldable phones with a micrometer and found that only the Galaxy Z Fold 7 was thinner than officially claimed. Samsung claims the device is 8.9mm thick, but the association measured it at 8.82mm. There's bad news for rival foldables, though. The association found that the HONOR Magic V5, vivo X Fold 5, Xiaomi Mix Fold 4, and HUAWEI Mate X6 were all thicker than originally claimed. The Mate X6 was 0.62mm thicker than advertised, followed by the X Fold 5 (0.57mm) and the Magic V5 (0.54mm). This doesn't sound like much, but it can make the difference for manufacturers claiming they have the world's thinnest foldable phone. Check out the table below, which shows the claimed thickness in the second column and the measured thickness in the third column. The report acknowledged that some brands measure their phones without including the inner protective screen layers. HONOR officially measures its device without accounting for inner or outer screen layers. This measurement method is particularly problematic as the inner protective screen layer is considered a permanent part of the phone. Consumers are warned not to peel off this film and that only repair agents should remove it. Do you care that foldable phones are slightly thicker than claimed? 0 votes Yes, it's completely misleading NaN % I care if it's significantly thicker than claimed NaN % No, I don't care NaN % I'd still urge you to take these results with a tiny pinch of salt, as Samsung Electronics is listed as a member of this association. Nevertheless, this isn't a good look for many recent foldable phones. So we hope these manufacturers switch to a more consumer-friendly method of measuring their phones. This isn't the only questionable measurement method we've seen, either. We recently discovered that HONOR, HUAWEI, OPPO, and vivo weigh their foldables without these inner films. That's something to remember when brands brag about having the lightest foldable phone on the market.

Leaker explains Samsung's plans to juggle Android updates and flagship launches

Joe Maring / Android Authority TL;DR Android 16's early release schedule has shaken up platform update plans across OEMs. For Samsung, a new leak clarifies that the company will launch major One UI version bumps alongside the Android platform bump, coinciding them with the launch of the Galaxy Z series flagships. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S series flagships will be the first to feature One UI x.5 versions, which ironically will include more substantial UI/UX changes and new features. Google's changes to Android 16's release schedule have shaken up the entire Android ecosystem's software release schedule. With Android 16 releasing earlier than usual, phone manufacturers have had to rethink some of their phone launches, as they risked launching flagships that did not ship with the latest Android version on board. Samsung extensively delayed One UI 7 rollout for the benefit of the Galaxy S25 series, and even jumped to One UI 8 for the benefit of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7. A new leak is now clarifying how Samsung's update schedule will proceed in light of these changes. Noted leaked UniverseIce shared an explanation of Samsung's future update schedule. The leaker mentions that Samsung will now seemingly look to align major One UI version updates with Google's Android platform releases. For instance, One UI 8 is based on Android 16, and you can expect One UI 9 to be based on Android 17. These platform jumps will be aligned with the release of a new generation of Galaxy Z flagships, so you can expect the Galaxy Z Fold 8 to launch with One UI 9 based on Android 17 sometime next year. Changes are expected for Galaxy S flagships, too. These phones will now be the first to receive updates for One UI x.5 version releases. You'd think that Samsung would have expended all of its key features with the primary platform jump intended for the Galaxy Z flagship, but leaker UniverseIce says that the company will be reserving major changes for this point-five release on the Galaxy S flagship. For example, you can expect new UI/UX, AI features, and software enhancements to come with One UI 8.5 that will launch with the Galaxy S26 series, which will release sometime in early 2026. The leaker further mentions that the Galaxy S series remains Samsung's flagship priority. The development timeline from Z Fold to S flagships is longer, so the updates also get more time to be refined. This change helps make the Galaxy S-series flagships even more important, while the Galaxy Z series flagships can pull their own weight with bleeding-edge foldable tech. However, I continue to dislike that Samsung would be holding off on updates artificially just to squeeze some exclusivity for its latest hardware. Even Apple doesn't do so, with all iPhones getting the latest iOS update on day one, often before the freshest, newest iPhone reaches consumers. Older Galaxy flagship users deserve better than such artificial delays, and I hope Samsung at least begins stable rollout on the same day as it launches new hardware.
