Saints make big call on VFL team
St Kilda will be back playing at Moorabbin in 2026 after confirming the club will field a stand-alone reserves side in the VFL, abandoning its relationship with Sandringham. The Saints have been aligned with Sandringham since 2009, but the relationship has failed to deliver much for either team. It leaves just Hawthorn and Melbourne as AFL clubs without a stand-alone reserves team and could push the VFL to a mammoth 22 teams should all teams move into next season. 'We've had a strong and productive working relationship with Sandringham Football Club since 2009, one that has delivered great benefits to both clubs over the years,' St Kilda chief executive Carl Dilena said. 'The Saints are now entering a critical phase in our men's list build and broader club growth. It is crucial we have full control and oversight of our men's VFL program to ensure consistent player development strategies, alignment in game plan, and list management. 'We also want to continue investing in our people. Full ownership of our VFL team creates greater opportunities for staff development and internal progression.' Dilena said the move would allow for 'more matches' to be played at RSEA Park in Moorabbin, the club's training base that last hosted AFL games in 1992 but has staged AFLW matches in recent seasons. 'That not only holds strong cultural significance for our club but is equipped with AFL-grade technology and facilities that will support the VFL program,' Dilena said. Former St Kilda star Brendan Goddard coaches Sandringham, having been part of Saints coach Ross Lyon's staff before making the move. He will coach the St Kilda VFL team in 2026.

Murphy Reid: Fremantle Dockers young gun signs two-year contract extension to stay in WA until at least 2029
Fremantle have moved swiftly to lock down one of their most valuable young assets, with Rising Star contender Murphy Reid inking a two-year extension to remain at the club until at least the end of 2029. Reid becomes the latest in a string of key Dockers to recommit to the club over the past 12 months, adding two more seasons onto his existing three-year deal after arriving at the club as their top pick in last year's draft. It's a key signing for Fremantle, with the Sandringham product turning heads with his daring and composed play across half-forward to emerge as a pivotal player in his debut season. 'Since joining the Freo family, Murphy has demonstrated a strong sense of professionalism to learn and improve his game,' Freo's head of player personnel David Walls said. 'He came to the club as a midfielder and has transitioned to a new role in attack after working closely with our coaches - and the entire playing squad - to add to his game. 'Moving to WA, Murphy has been able to develop strong relationships with his teammates and has established a good connection with his host family. 'It's obviously been a strong year on-field as a first-year player, so it's pleasing to be able to reward that form with an extension. Clearly, he is happy and wants to be a part of what we are building at Fremantle.' Last year's Pick 17 has featured in every game this season after debuting in Fremantle's season opener, and wasted no time making his mark. Reid has booted 16 goals and dished off 10 goal assists while averaging almost 14 disposals per game. He joined Geelong great Tom Hawkins as the only two 18-year-olds to have recorded multiple matches of 4+ goals in the first 11 matches of a career, while ranking alongside Errol Gulden and Cyril Rioli as the only players with 17 or more score assists through their first 10 games. Reid said he was thrilled to lock in the new deal. 'Ever since I got here, everyone has just wrapped their arms around me,' Reid said. 'The connection is great here at the club, the culture is great, and that's probably been a highlight - making new mates.' The teenager is in a battle with the likes of Brisbane's Levi Ashcroft, Essendon's Archie Roberts and Melbourne's Harvey Langford to snare this year's Rising Star prize. More to come

Charles holds surprise meeting with Zelensky who sends subtle Donald Trump dig
The King has met with the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky ahead of his meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer about the ongoing war in Ukraine, while also sending a sneaky message to Donald Trump The King has met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Windsor Castle ahead of his meeting with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at a Nato summit. Charles welcomed the leader to an audience, followed by lunch, at the Berkshire royal residence today. The Nato summit, set to begin tomorrow, will see the two leaders discuss Ukraine 's defences and new ways to increase pressure on Russia to end the war in the region, which has been raging since February 2022. During his meeting with King Charles, the Ukrainian president was dressed in a black blazer and black trousers, rather than his usual combat fatigues, for his trip to the castle. Many have interpreted his choice of outfit as a subtle dig to US president Donald Trump, held an extraordinary meeting with Zelensky at the White House ealier this year - where he was cruelly mocked for his choice of clothes. In the months after President Trump was re-elected, Zelensky was invited to an audience at the White House with Trump and Vice President JD Vance. As Mr Trump shook Mr Zelenskyy's hand at the entrance to the West Wing, he said: "He is all dressed up today," with Brian Glenn, who is the chief White House correspondent for right-wing website Real America's Voice, later asking Mr Zelensky why he doesn't wear a suit, accusing him of having a lack of respect for America. "I will wear a costume when this war is finished," the Ukrainian leader defiantly responded. "Maybe something like yours. Maybe something better. Maybe something cheaper." Today, as King Charles and Mr Zelensky made their way through Windsor Castle, they were pictured chatting and smiling as they shook hands in the Grand Corridor. The King and the Ukrainian leader have met numerous times before including in March when Charles invited him to an audience at Sandringham in Norfolk, and last July at the European Political Community summit at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire. Mr Zelensky's arrival in the UK follows reports that Russia fired 352 drones and 16 missiles at Ukraine overnight, killing at least 10 civilians including seven in Kyiv. Zelensky said preliminary reports indicated Russia had used North Korean missiles to attack Kyiv and described those two countries as a 'coalition of murderers'. His visit to London comes the day before Nato leaders are set to meet in The Hague, Netherlands, for a two-day summit, with increased defence spending top of the agenda. While Mr Zelensky has been invited to the summit but will not take part in its main discussions, and it is still unclear whether he will attend at all. A spokesman for Downing Street said: 'President Zelensky is visiting the UK today, ahead of the Nato summit in the Hague. You can expect the Prime Minister to host him in Downing Street this afternoon and reiterate our steadfast support for Ukraine.' In a post on X, Zelensky said: 'Today, during my visit to the United Kingdom, I will be discussing this very issue with our partners — our defence, which must become the foundation of a much stronger collective security. We will also be negotiating new and powerful steps to increase pressure on Russia for this war and to put an end to the strikes.'

Charles shares affectionate moment with Duchess of York as race win hopes dashed
The King shared an affectionate moment with Sarah, Duchess of York during a day his hopes of a Royal Ascot winner were dashed. Charles kissed Sarah's hand when the pair met in the famous racecourse's parade ring, as the duchess' daughter Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank watched. The King has known Sarah for decades but she appeared out of the royal fold until invited to spend Christmas Day with the King and Queen at Sandringham in 2023. Among the famous racegoers was Harry Potter author JK Rowling who was spotted in a box at the grounds with her husband Neil Murray, former defence secretary Ben Wallace and the King's niece Zara Tindall. On the track the King and Queen's racing pot of gold failed to materialise when their horse Purple Rainbow was well beaten in the aptly named Sandringham Stakes. The royal couple watched the fast-paced race from the royal box and were glued to monitors, with the King animated in the closing stages of the mile-long sprint. He bobbed on the spot as if willing on his jockey Warren Fentiman but Purple Rainbow, who was not fancied by the bookies, did not challenge the front runners. The couple looked up in the closing stages to watch the race as it came past the stands but Never Let Go crossed the line first and the King and his wife were left opened-mouthed. The touching greeting between the King and his former sister-in-law, who still remains close to ex-husband the Duke of York, may be in part due to their cancer journeys. The head of state is receiving ongoing cancer care while Sarah has spoken publicly about her own treatment for skin and breast cancer, undergoing a mastectomy. At the start of the day racegoers were given a respite from this week's sweltering conditions but the hazy cloud over the Berkshire racecourse burned away by late afternoon pushing up temperatures. Staff were handing out free bottles of water and Will Aitkenhead, head of corporate and industry affairs at the track, said they had worked hard overnight to provide more shaded areas. The King and Queen were joined in the royal box by Camilla's old school friend Lady Cavendish and her husband Lord Cavendish, the former Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad, the Queen's Companion the Marchioness of Lansdowne and musical maestro Lord Lloyd-Webber. Charles and Camilla will have another chance at racing success – after two of their horses were well beaten earlier this week – when The King's Falcon runs in the Golden Gate Stakes, during Royal Ascot's final day on Saturday. The late Queen was a passionate owner and breeder of thoroughbreds and had more than 20 Royal Ascot winners during her 70-year reign. Charles and Camilla have taken on her stable of horses and enjoyed their first Royal Ascot winner in 2023 when their horse Desert Hero triumphed in the King George V Stakes. Royal Ascot is as much a social occasion as a sporting event and towards the end of the day an online video emerged of two men apparently fighting at the grounds where tens of thousands had enjoyed the day without incident.
