Saints make big call on VFL team

Perth Now21 hours ago

St Kilda will be back playing at Moorabbin in 2026 after confirming the club will field a stand-alone reserves side in the VFL, abandoning its relationship with Sandringham.
The Saints have been aligned with Sandringham since 2009, but the relationship has failed to deliver much for either team.
It leaves just Hawthorn and Melbourne as AFL clubs without a stand-alone reserves team and could push the VFL to a mammoth 22 teams should all teams move into next season.
'We've had a strong and productive working relationship with Sandringham Football Club since 2009, one that has delivered great benefits to both clubs over the years,' St Kilda chief executive Carl Dilena said. 'Our alignment has been an important part of both clubs' commitment to the Bayside community, which we remain incredibly proud to be part of.
'The Saints are now entering a critical phase in our men's list build and broader club growth. It is crucial we have full control and oversight of our men's VFL program to ensure consistent player development strategies, alignment in game plan, and list management.
'We also want to continue investing in our people. Full ownership of our VFL team creates greater opportunities for staff development and internal progression.'
Dilena said the move would allow for 'more matches' to be played at RSEA Park in Moorabbin, the club's training base that last hosted AFL games in 1992 but has staged AFLW matches in recent seasons.
'That not only holds strong cultural significance for our club but is equipped with AFL-grade technology and facilities that will support the VFL program,' Dilena said. St Kilda has played AFLW games at Moorabbin. Picture by Michael Klein Credit: News Corp Australia
It comes after St Kilda had a submission to change the name of Sandringham, known forever as the Zebras, to the Sandringham Saints, knocked back by the Sandringham board.
Former St Kilda star Brendan Goddard coaches Sandringham, having been part of Saints coach Ross Lyon's staff before making the move. He will coach the St Kilda VFL team in 2026.

‘Needs to get out': ‘Embarrassment' theory explains Lynch's ugly punch

Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. The future of under-fire Richmond forward Tom Lynch has been queried, as he awaits suspension for his gruesome hit behind play on Adelaide defender Jordan Butts. Lynch, 32, is expected to receive a punishment that rubs him out of playing any football for at least four weeks — with Fox Sports News' David Zita reporting the AFL will push for a five-week ban. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? The two-time premiership player was hardly sighted against the Crows on Sunday afternoon at the MCG, and failed to register a disposal in the first two-and-a-half quarter with five free kicks against him to his name as his angst increased. Speaking on Fox Footy's AFL 360, St Kilda great Leigh Montagna and host Gerard Whateley dissected the incident which has drawn ugly comparisons in nature to Barry Hall's punch on Brent Staker in 2008, and Andrew Gaff's blow on a young Andrew Brayshaw 10 years later. MELBOURNE, JUNE 29, 2025: AFL Football Round 16 - Richmond Cats V Adelaide Crows at the MCG. Tom Lynch of the Richmond Tigers gets heated. Picture: Mark Stewart 'You sense he had the red mist going ... he was already giving away free kicks. I think he'd given away five free kicks before he got a disposal,' Montagna said on Monday night. 'To be fair, I don't think anyone would expect to see what we saw; that caught everyone by surprise. We haven't seen anything like that for years, 2018 might've been the (Andrew) Gaff incident. 'I wonder whether there was a frustration about his own form and how he was playing. Whether there was a sense of embarrassment and frustration that he couldn't touch the footy, and it just got too much for him. Lynch, who has begun preliminary discussions with Richmond for a one-year extension at Punt Road, remains out of contract beyond 2025 at a club continuing to blood a plethora of young talent. X SUBSCRIBER ONLY Out of the finals race and in the back half of their season, a five-week suspension would leave Lynch available for just three more matches this season. Subsequently, it could force both him and the club to think about life without each other. 'The whole industry needs to do its job here, and that's not to get beguiled by the lawyers. The right level of punishment is a confronting one,' Whateley said. 'Nash gets his four weeks for the round-house on (Gryan) Miers and the ball is there. It's agricultural, the ball is there. This has to be the biggest suspension of the year. 'I also think with Lynch it's an interesting moment. It's highly unlikely he's going to play in the next successful Richmond team ... he's going to have to find a way to manage all this. 'He's going to have to manage this for the remainder of his playing days, and if he can't, he probably needs to get out of it.' X SUBSCRIBER ONLY Fox Footy expert Jack Riewoldt has previously floated the idea of his former teammate moving back to his former club the Gold Coast Suns and finish his career playing under three-time premiership coach Damien Hardwick. Whichever way his situation is looked at though, Montagna believes his mindset needs to alter quickly if he is to continue mentoring young Tiger talent. 'He has to completely change his mindset ... he can't let the frustrations boil over. He needs to start thinking about the team instead of himself; that is his role in the side now,' Montagna ended by saying. 'Maybe he says, if it's too hard for him, put his hand up and say: 'Maybe I can go to a contender for another year or two' if he thinks he's got it in him. 'He's going to have a lot of work to do on himself ... he's let himself and the team down.' Originally published as 'Needs to get out': 'Embarrassment' theory explains Lynch's ugly punch

Outer East FN: Mullett kicks eight, Garner six as Wandin overpowers Woori Yallock

Don't miss out on the headlines from Local Footy. Followed categories will be added to My News. Aaron Mullett has achieved a lot in football but he's never kicked a century of goals. That's set to change, though, with the Wandin wizard moving to 83 for the season after a bag of eight against Woori Yallock on Saturday. With seven games left, plus finals, the ex-AFL Roo and Blue should do it on the bit. 'It's going to be a special day,' Mullett's coach at Wandin, Nick Adam, said. But just when Mullett will notch the ton has created much interest. Outer East put up a Facebook post on Monday asking for predictions, in what round he'll kick his 100th, and how many he'll finish up with this season. Most responses had him reaching the century in another three matches, in round 14, when Wandin hosts Olinda Ferny Creek. As for how many Mullett could end up with by season's end, there were predictions of between 111 and 127. There's also the possibility of Mullett missing a game or two in the back end as Wandin, with an eye on finals, manages its star — although Adam said the club hadn't scheduled any games off for the 33-year-old. 'His body is feeling really good,' Adam said. 'We manage his load through the week … he is professional as anyone in what he does to prepare to play footy.' Adam said the Bulldogs would play Mullett 'if he feels he's ready and fresh'. 'I think once we get the 100 out of the way then that becomes another conversation about what we do leading into finals,' Adam said. 'I have this conversation all the time but players want to play. 'And whether you're 34 or 21 … it's instinctual to them, it's in their DNA. 'But we're mindful that we need him to be the best version of himself in September.' On Saturday, Mullett combined with Joel Garner, who kicked six goals, to overpower Woori Yallock 17.15 (117) to 14.9 (93). The Bulldogs named Cayden Black as their best player after his strong and impressive display in the midfield. 'He's a ripper kid, a ripper human, tough and uncompromising would be the way I'd describe him,' Adam said of Black. Macauley Beckwith was also influential for Wandin, kicking a goal in the last quarter as the Bulldogs edged ahead. 'He went on ball and was our best player in the last quarter when the game was up for grabs,' Adam said of Beckwith. 'The intensity that he played at for that (last) 30 minutes was a step above almost everybody else.' Wandin debuted two teenagers: 16yo Camden Jones, who played on a wing, and Riley Gray, who played in the back six. Both did well. 'We feel like we've got a defined pathway of talent that's going to come through,' Adam said. 'There's about eight of them in under 18s who look like they could potentially be 100 game players for the club.' Wandin's Harrison van Duuren was taken to hospital after copping an accidental knock. Wandin hosts Monbulk on Saturday.

‘Everyone should be up for discussion': Carlton urged to consider trading Patrick Cripps

Four-time premiership Hawk Jordan Lewis has encouraged Carlton to consider trading Patrick Cripps because of the way AFL football is now being played. Carlton sit 11th on the ladder heading into round 17, three wins outside the top eight with their finals hopes dashed after losses to North Melbourne and Port Adelaide. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. Pressure is mounting on coach Michael Voss, who is in his fourth year in charge at Carlton. His best result was a 2023 preliminary final appearance. It appears likely the Blues will back in Voss, who is contracted for 2026, and hope the club can enjoy a resurgence similar to Richmond in 2017 following a dismal season. But speaking on Fox Footy's On The Couch, Lewis said Cripps, as well as key forwards Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay, should be on the trade table at season's end. 'You look at the players on your list that have currency,' Lewis said. 'Entertain the idea to get them out the door and get some draft picks.' Carlton's ball use, particularly kicking inside 50, has been poor this season, and Lewis believes only draftee Jagga Smith, who suffered an ACL injury on the eve of the season, can offer a change of pace in the midfield. Cripps is a contested ball beast but he is emblematic of Carlton's disposal efficiency woes. 'You've got to take the emotion out of it. I'm talking Cripps, Curnow, McKay,' Lewis said. 'I sit here and the way the game is going, you've got to be able to transition (in) in the midfield. 'I think you've got to take the emotion out of it. I keep coming back to — the best player in the league was traded out of Hawthorn — Lance Franklin left the Hawthorn Football Club to go to Sydney and everything was OK. 'I just think you don't want to have these conversations in three years time when the player you could have traded out has lost their currency.' Asked if it would be too harsh for Carlton to even consider trading Cripps, Lewis said: 'It is what it is, absolutely. 'If you want to be a mediocre side, you're not going to make tough decisions. Do you see Carlton winning a flag in the next five years?' Richmond champion Jack Riewoldt replied: 'Not on current form, no.' Lewis added: 'I honestly think everyone should be up for discussion other than probably Jagga Smith.' Trading Cripps would be a shocking move considering the 30-year-old is Carlton's club captain and he won his second Brownlow Medal last year with a record 45 votes. Ruckman Tom De Koning is expected to join St Kilda on a deal worth $1.7 million per season, while McKay and Walsh are also in trade rumours. 'It's the big three of Walsh, Curnow and McKay,' journalist Cal Twomey told Nine's Footy Classified on Monday. 'I don't think they move on Charlie Curnow. Speaking to clubs, they'll be much more movable on Harry McKay if the taker is there, a suitor with a relevant price for him. 'Sam Walsh is a different scenario. He's got one year to go before he hits free agency, but he's in absolutely no rush to get into his free agency call. Geelong is already making waves about getting him back to their area.'
