NHAI reviews road, safety preparedness for smooth Amarnath Yatra travel experience
NEW DELHI: To expedite preparedness and ensure smooth travel experience for the pilgrims undertaking 'Amarnath Yatra', a review meeting was held on Tuesday by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) with the officials from state administration. "Detailed reviews were held of all stretches of 228 km long Jammu – Srinagar section of NH-44 that falls on the Yatra route under NHAI jurisdiction," said officials of the ministry of road tax and highways (MoRTH). The meeting was led by NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav. Senior officials of the ministry and Jammu and Kashmir were also present. "The meeting aimed to review preparedness related to riding surface, lane markings, installing road safety measures as well as deployment of dedicated Quick Response Teams with sufficient manpower and machines to mitigate situations arising due to adverse weather conditions in the region during yatra," officials added Addressing the officials, NHAI Yadav emphasized that the comfort and safety of both devotees and commuters should be the utmost priority. He also directed NHAI officials to work in close coordination with local administrations and provide prompt support for the yatra preparedness.

NHAI holds review meet to assess preparations for Amarnath Yatra
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) held a review meeting on Tuesday (July 1, 2025) regarding the preparedness for Amarnath pilgrimage set to commence on July 3. The meeting was aimed at assessing the preparedness related to highway riding surface, lane markings, road safety measures as well as deployment of dedicated quick response teams. A detailed review was held for all stretches along the 228 km-long Jammu-Srinagar section of NH-44 that falls on the pilgrimage route under NHAI's jurisdiction. The Amarnath temple or shrine is located in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. NHAI chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav emphasised on the need for comfort and safety of both devotees and commuters. Alok Deepankar, Member (Technical), NHAI instructed field officers to ensure adequate deployment of manpower and machinery to manage emergencies related to inclement weather, or flash floods and landslides. He also directed officials to expedite work on the under-construction sections. NHAI also contributed a fleet of five ambulances through Quazigund Expressway Pvt. Ltd. for hospitals in Ramban and Anantnag districts, which were flagged off by J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. Apart from NHAI Chairman and Member (Technical), the J&K Government's PWD Secretary Bhupinder Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Ramban, Shokit Mattoo ACR Ramban, and NHAI officials from J&K field offices were also present during the meeting.

Work on NH-66 stretch picks up after setbacks
T'puram: After experiencing a significant setback due to contractor issues and material shortages, work on the critical Kazhakkoottam–Kadampattukonam section of NH-66 in the district has finally gained momentum. Construction stalled when the original contractor, RDS Projects Ltd, faced financial distress and was subcontracted to Pune-based RKC Infrastructure Ltd. However, shortage of materials still exists and the contractor is seeking materials from quarries in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. NHAI chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav personally inspected the site last week, directing the contractor to fulfil the state govt's strict deadline of Dec 2025. "Completion by Dec 2025 is non-negotiable," Yadav told officials during his visit. In the high-level meeting, Yadav made it clear that all the NH-66 works should be completed by the Dec deadline. Sources said that the work is now progressing rapidly in the Attingal bypass region, with only 40% of the work completed. The project has been beset by a series of delays, including acute shortages of rocks and red earth, essential for the construction. In response, the contractor petitioned the state govt for access to soil from a quarry in Mudakkal village. While this eased raw material issues, financial constraints ultimately necessitated subcontracting. The scope of work remains vast, with approximately 20 lakh metric tons of soil required for landfilling and construction of a massive 22-km retaining wall. Originally scheduled for completion in Jan 2025, the deadline was later extended to Oct 2025 and the contractor has recently requested a further extension to March 2026, a request deemed unacceptable by both NHAI and the state govt. NHAI outlines its asset monetization strategy for the first time
New Delhi: The National Highway Authority of India has for the first time outlined its strategy to monetize assets to unlock value and increase public-private participation for developing infrastructure in India. The state-run agency's 'Asset Monetization Strategy for the Road Sector' provides a blueprint to mobilize capital through toll-operate-transfer (ToT) model, infrastructure investment trusts (InvITs), and securitization. The strategy is anchored in three core pillars: value maximization of government road assets; transparency of processes and dissemination of investor-relevant information; and market development through deepening the investor base as well as promoting stakeholder engagement. As one of the early movers towards alternative financing mechanisms, the NHAI's strategy aligns with the Government of India's asset monetization plan for 2025-30. Instruments like ToT, InvITs and securitisation have helped the state-run agency to raise over ₹ 1.4 trillion so far across more than 6,100 km of national highways under the National Monetization Pipeline. 'The unique approach that NHAI has adopted towards asset monetization not only ensures financial sustainability but also opens opportunities for the private sector, leverages advanced technologies, enhances quality and longevity of our road assets,' said NHAI chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav. 'The successful implementation of this strategy will provide NHAI with a steady stream of financing, reducing our reliance on traditional funding sources.' N.R.V.V.M.K. Rajendra Kumar, member finance, NHAI said, 'This document outlines a strategic framework to maximize the benefits of asset monetization. It emphasizes the need for a structured approach to identify and value assets, ensuring transparency and fostering investor confidence.' According to ratings agency Crisil Ltd, for NHAI to reach its previous highs of 6,000 km per year of awards and execution, a substantial rise in private capital through acceleration in asset monetisation will be essential. 'We expect the share of monetisation in NHAI's sources of funds to grow to 18% in this fiscal and next, compared with 14% in the preceding two fiscals,' Crisil said in its report on infrastructure. 'What lends confidence here is a monetisable asset base worth ₹ 3.5-4 lakh crore.'

Mastermind behind police attack yet to be nabbed
Ranchi: The mastermind behind the attack on the policemen at Koinara village under the Lapung police station area, some 40 km away from the Ranchi district headquarters, is still absconding. A mob attacked the policemen with sticks and sharp weapons on Tuesday, when they arrived in the village to oversee the law and order situation which was disrupted over a land dispute between two groups. No arrests were made in connection with the incident till filing of this report. Two policemen, including the in-charge of the Lapung police station, Santosh Kumar Yadav are undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Ranchi. Two other personnel were discharged from the hospital on Wednesday. Ranchi (rural) SP Praveen Pushkar said that the mastermind who has Naxalite link and incited the violence is currently on the run. "Police have been trying to trace him," SP said. The situation is under control now, he added. TNN
