Satya crafts twin ‘Nandighoshas'
Berhampur In a spell-binding tribute to Lord Jagannath and the spirit of Rath Yatra, sand and miniature artiste Satya Narayan Maharana has created two handcrafted Nandighosha chariots made from cane and old newspapers. Famed for his miniature artifacts that earned him over 70 national and international records, Satya Narayan ventured into new artistic realms. For the first time, he has crafted a Nandighosha chariot entirely from cane, a feat of patience and devotion. This 11-inch-high and 7.5-inch-wide cane chariot is an intricate masterpiece featuring 4 horses, 2 reversed parrots, 16 wheels, Dadhinauti, Patitapabana flag, Sarathi and one beautifully crafted idol of Lord Jagannath (all made of cane), the only coloured element in the otherwise French-polished creation. It took three days of delicate work, involving softening the cane in water for hours before weaving and moulding it into divine artistry. Equally remarkable is the second chariot, made from discarded newspapers, meticulously layered and glued with 'Fevicol', followed by watercolour painting. This 3-inch-high and 2-inch-wide marvel, completed in just four hours, stands as a testament to sustainable creativity and visual appeal. At 41 years old, Satya Narayan continues to mesmerise art lovers with his skill and devotion. Having already sculpted 17 miniature Nandighosha chariots earlier using diverse materials like wood, chalk, bamboo, ice-cream sticks, clay and even shirt buttons, his latest effort celebrates both heritage and innovation. These miniature chariots are not just models—they are symbols of devotion carved through creativity, echoing the spirit of Rath Yatra in the smallest, most enchanting forms.

UP dept adopts simpler and faster process for issuing driving licence
Lucknow: A detailed review of new driving licence applications from Jan 1 to June 10 by the transport department revealed the success of its "paperless, faceless, and cashless" initiative, with several districts recording exceptional disposal rates and minimal pendency. Ghaziabad received 24,115 applications with just 15 pending (0.06%), Prayagraj (RTO) had 33 pending out of 23,914 (0.13%), and Muzaffarnagar reported only 20 pending out of 13,523 (0.15%). In districts like Shahjahanpur (0.46%) and Amethi (0.63%), where application volumes were lower, pendency rates were slightly higher. The department has responded by initiating special monitoring in these areas. Thanks to strong monitoring, administrative efficiency, and effective public awareness campaigns, including outreach via social media, the pendency rate dropped below 0.5% in over 90% of the districts, said an official. The department aims to further streamline the application and approval process with the help of Community Service Centres (CSCs) and the Sarathi portal. Performance reviews will be conducted regularly to maintain and improve results. "Owing to the department's continuous efforts, the licence issuance process has become simpler, faster, and more transparent. All districts have been instructed to ensure that pending cases are resolved within seven days. Officials from lagging districts have been urged to evaluate their performance and take swift corrective measures based on the comprehensive review report issued by the department," said transport commissioner, Brijesh Narayan Singh.

PGI developing app for patient identification, crowd management
1 2 Chandigarh: The PGI is working with CDAC Noida to develop a QR code-based patient identification and sophisticated crowd and queue management features app. "With this app, the patients can scan and pay the fee and register online. Those who are outstation can go to their e-sampark centres, and get registered with a specific token number," Pankaj Rai, deputy director of administration, PGI. "Once they visit the PGI, the token can be shown and all demographic details that were captured will be printed as the OPD card. This will not waste time," he said, adding that "a map of the PGI will be integrated into this app, which can be used for navigation by the student volunteers of the project Sarathi." The app's development is expected to progress rapidly, with the Advanced Paediatric Centre to start it as a pilot project in the next three to four months. This digital push is part of a broader strategy, which also includes the ongoing upgrade of the Hospital Information System (HIS) to version 2. The complete digitisation of the HIS already streamlined processes such as indenting and medicine procurement under schemes like Ayushman Bharat, ensuring greater transparency and efficiency across the institute. Addressing the increasing patient load and the critical need for enhanced security and crowd management, Prof Vivek Lal, director PGI, announced the approval to recruit 300 ex-servicemen through outsourcing. These personnel are expected to join the campus security team within the next four to five months. Additionally, PGI recruited 82 new faculty members, strictly adhering to department of personnel & training (DoPT) norms, including EWS reservation, reinforcing the institute's commitment to meritocracy. "The implementation of 12-hour operating theatre (OT) schedules led to a remarkable 30-40% increase in the number of surgeries performed, effectively improving patient throughput. To support this increased surgical capacity, 32 new OT technicians are slated to join the institute within the next four months," he said.

Residents of Wakad, Ravet complain of contaminated drinking water since May last week
According to residents of Wakad, Ravet and nearby areas under the jurisdiction of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), they have been receiving contaminated drinking water - which is muddy, greenish in colour, and has a foul taste - since the last week of May, causing health concerns. The residents of these areas said that several complaints have been lodged on the PCMC's 'Sarathi' portal and that many residents are complaining of stomach upset and diarrhoea. Sachin Londe, a citizen-activist from Wakad, said that two residents from their housing society have been hospitalised due to consumption of contaminated water. 'We have to spend thousands of rupees for testing the water. The PCMC is disconnecting the water supply of societies with defunct sewage treatment plants (STPs). While the civic body is alert about sending property tax reminders, why can't it be equally alert about supplying safe drinking water. When is it going to fulfil its duty?' Londe questioned. Sandip Yeole, a resident of Horizon Society in Wakad, said that the society which houses 266 flats has been receiving dirty water since the last week of May. 'Since May 26/27, the water has either been greenish or muddy. The taste is also strange. Many residents have fallen sick with stomach ache and other complaints,' Yeole said. To prevent further health risks, the society has stopped using tap water for drinking purposes. 'We are using tanker water for domestic purposes and are buying packaged water for drinking. The issue seems to be from the PCMC's main water supply line,' Yeole said. According to residents, some societies are even receiving drinking water with worms in it. The TDS of the drinking water has risen significantly and measures between 200 to 250 ppm. Initially, everyone thought that the contaminated water supply was restricted to their house or society. However, when several people in the area started falling sick, residents discovered that the entire area had the problem. Sachin Siddhe, a resident of Nano Homes in Ravet, said that the problem is widespread in Pimpri-Chinchwad. 'At first, people thought the problem was with their individual water tanks or RO purifiers. But later, everyone realised that the greenish and bad-smelling water was being supplied to all areas. The PCMC should solve the problem on a priority basis,' he said. According to Siddhe, PCMC officials have admitted that there is an issue with their water filtration unit. However, they have maintained that the overall water quality is not harmful—an assurance residents are finding difficult to believe given the growing number of people falling sick, he said. Pramod Ombhase, joint city engineer, PCMC, said, 'We have received complaints from residents about contaminated water supply. We will take preventive measures on priority. The water lines will be flushed and the citizens will once again get safe and clean water for drinking,' he said.
