Sagah: Jalan Padawan project on track under new contractor

Sagah confirms that the project, now under new management, is showing positive progress based on updates from the Sarawak JKR. – Photo by Chimon Upon SERIAN (July 11): Phase 1 of the Jalan Padawan upgrading project is progressing smoothly under a newly appointed rescue contractor, said Sarawak Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn. The Tarat assemblyman confirmed that the project, now under new management, is showing positive progress based on updates from the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR). 'Based on reports from JKR Sarawak, I believe the project is going on smoothly (under the new contractor),' he said when met after officiating the 'Petronas Memacu Kehidupan Gawai 2025' event at Kampung Tarat Melawi here today. However, Sagah noted that weather disruptions have occasionally slowed progress. 'Certain days, the weather doesn't permit us to accelerate the works,' he said, adding that rising public expectations often lead to complaints. He stressed that quality remains a top priority, and the contractor has been given the necessary time to ensure the project meets required standards. Phase 1 of the upgrade covers a 14.9-kilometre stretch from Tapah to Teng Bukap. Jalan Padawan Roland Sagah upgrading project

Upgrades for Nangka longhouses

The ruai and tanju (communal areas) of all 34 longhouses within the Nangka state constituency will be upgraded, says Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee. The Sarawak Education, Innovation and Talent Development Deputy Minister said works would be carried out in stages in line with available funding. 'We will proceed gradually,' said Dr Annuar, who is also Nangka assemblyman. 'There are 34 longhouses in Nangka, and I will endeavour to upgrade the ruai and tanju bit by bit. 'This is because my yearly allocation is only about RM5mil, which must be distributed according to needs across the entire constituency,' he said during the 2025 Gawai Ngabang Programme at Rumah Maxwell in Oya Road, Sibu. Dr Annuar noted that three longhouses in the area still lacked access to clean water due to their remote location, and said this issue would be addressed in stages. Commenting on the Gawai Dayak celebration, Dr Annuar said the festival was a testament to Sarawak's harmonious multi-ethnic society. 'Gawai Dayak is not only celebrated by the Dayak community but also embraced by all ethnic groups in Sarawak. 'This is what makes Sarawak special. We must safeguard this spirit,' he said. During his visit, Dr Annuar also handed over loudspeakers, an audio system and fire extinguishers to residents of Rumah Maxwell. — By ANDY CHUA

SPM 2024 sees Sarawak post best performance with GPN of 4.84

This marks an improvement of 0.08 from the previous year's GPN of 4.92. Under the national grading system, a lower GPN indicates better overall academic performance. 'Sarawak has shown improvements both in quality and performance. Our State Average Grade improved to 4.84 from 4.92 in 2023, one of the best performances yet. 'The percentage of qualified candidates also increased, from 93.15 per cent in 2023 to 9.411 per cent in 2024. 'This shows more candidates are eligible to receive their certificates, having at least passed BM and Sejarah,' he told a press conference on the SPM 2024 results and performance for Sarawak here today.
