Sagah: Jalan Padawan project on track under new contractor
SERIAN (July 11): Phase 1 of the Jalan Padawan upgrading project is progressing smoothly under a newly appointed rescue contractor, said Sarawak Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
The Tarat assemblyman confirmed that the project, now under new management, is showing positive progress based on updates from the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR).
'Based on reports from JKR Sarawak, I believe the project is going on smoothly (under the new contractor),' he said when met after officiating the 'Petronas Memacu Kehidupan Gawai 2025' event at Kampung Tarat Melawi here today.
However, Sagah noted that weather disruptions have occasionally slowed progress.
'Certain days, the weather doesn't permit us to accelerate the works,' he said, adding that rising public expectations often lead to complaints.
He stressed that quality remains a top priority, and the contractor has been given the necessary time to ensure the project meets required standards.

RM31.7 mln for post-monsoon disaster recovery projects proposed in Serian

These proposed projects include repairs to areas affected by floods, landslides, erosion, and fallen trees during the Northeast Monsoon earlier this year. Sagah, who is also Tarat assemblyman, was cited in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report as saying these proposed projects are a comprehensive effort to strengthen disaster response capabilities and minimise the risk of future damage. 'The disaster (floods and landslides) this time was particularly challenging as it occurred during the Chinese New Year celebrations. However, the swift action and cooperation of all agencies and the local community ensured the safety and welfare of the people,' he said at a closing of Gawai and appreciation dinner for individuals involved during Northeast Monsoon 2025 at Dewan Tapah, Siburan on Friday night. On a related matter, he said a total seven flood relief centres (PPS) in Serian Division are being upgraded as a proactive measure in facing any possible future natural disasters especially during the Northeast Monsoon. He explained this PPS upgrade is part of the state government's efforts to improve infrastructure preparedness and strengthen community support systems when dealing with disaster situations. He also acknowledged the efforts of Serian Division Resident Caroline Cleophas Joseph as the Chairman of the Divisional Disaster Management Committee, along with district officers, community leaders and donors who provided assistance in various forms during the Northeast Monsoon earlier this year which affected more than 2,500 residents in Serian. 'This assistance and contribution not only saved lives, but also became a symbol of the humanity and solidarity of the Sarawakian community,' he added. He also announced a total RM780,000 in flood disaster compassionate funds have been approved by the Sarawak JPBN to be channeled to 780 heads of households who moved to PPS between Jan 28 January and February 6 this year. Over 3,000 join colourful Gawai Dayak 2025 Parade in Kuching

The day began with the traditional Orang Ulu 'Upacara Mamat' ceremony, held at the Tun Jugah Building lobby. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg officiated the ritual, which was conducted by the Sarawak Council for Customs and Traditions and led by Pemanca Tony Kulleh from the Belaga Kenyah community. The ritual sought blessings and permission from ancestral spirits to commence the parade. Among those in attendance were Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, along with the main organising committee chair of the state-level Gawai Dayak celebration, Datuk Gerawat Gala. The 'Upacara Mamat' ritual remains symbolic as a celebration of unity and a means of passing down the spirit of courage and togetherness to younger generations. It reflects values of gratitude, shared achievement, and harmony – ideals at the heart of Gawai. The two-hour parade also featured contingents and special guests from outside Sarawak, including members of the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) Sarawak Branch. Contingents from the Bidayuh community included branches of the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) from Serian, Lundu, Urban Kuching, Central Kuching, Siburan, Serapi, Penrissen, Padawan, Bau, Samarahan and Tebedu, as well as the Kuching Biperoh Association, Kuching Biya Association, and the Jagoi Area Development Committee. Representing the Iban community were the Tun Jugah Foundation, Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU), Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak, Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry, several SDNU branches, the Anak Borneo Semenanjung Association, Sarawak Pribumi Intellectual Association, Dayak Kuching Community Culture and Charity Club, and Sarawak Dayak Iban Association.
