KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested five men in Kuching yesterday for suspected involvement in smuggling untaxed cigarettes and alcohol, with seizures exceeding RM4 million. The operation was led by Bukit Aman's Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Intelligence (WCB/PSK) alongside the Sarawak General Operations Force under Op Taring 1 and 2. Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Internal Security and Public Order Department (JKDNKA) director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim confirmed the arrests. The suspects, aged 19 to 30, included four locals and one foreign national. They were detained at storage facilities suspected of being used for illegal distribution. Seized items included three lorries, 31,740 litres of alcohol, 280,000 sticks of white cigarettes, and 6,000 sticks of clove cigarettes, all believed to be untaxed. The total estimated value was RM4.03 million. The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. Azmi noted that WCB/PSK has conducted 153 raids nationwide this year, resulting in 233 arrests and seizures worth over RM433 million. He urged the public to report smuggling activities to authorities.

KUCHING: The Sarawak General Operations Force (GOF) confiscated goods worth RM5,497,813 in four separate operations targeting illegal logging, liquor, diesel, and drugs between June 23 and 28. The operations, named Op Taring Alpha, Op Taring Bravo, Op Taring Awas, and Op Libas, were conducted in Kuching, Sibu, Miri, and Lundu. SAC Dr Che Ghazali Che Awang, GOF Commander, confirmed the seizures in a statement today. The largest haul came from Op Libas in Sibu on June 24, where authorities raided an illegal logging site, arresting three men aged 39 to 57. A total of 350 logs and a wood-cutting machine were seized, with an estimated value of RM3.504 million. In Op Taring Alpha on June 23, GOF investigators raided a premises in Kuching, seizing 32,736 litres of untaxed liquor and arresting five men aged 26 to 36. A lorry was also confiscated, bringing the total seizure value to RM1,457,648. Meanwhile, Op Taring Bravo in Miri on June 25 led to the arrest of two men aged 32 and 45, along with the seizure of 39,300 litres of diesel stored without a permit. A storage tank and a lorry were also taken, with the total seizure valued at RM486,065. The final operation, Op Taring Awas in Lundu on June 28, saw three men aged 23 to 36 arrested after GOF officers found 0.32 grams of suspected methamphetamine in their vehicle. The total seizure, including the car, was worth RM50,100. From January 1 to June 30, Sarawak GOF recorded total seizures worth RM290.3 million, involving 236 cases and 355 arrests. Among those detained were 264 locals and 91 foreigners, with 193 vehicles impounded.

He said the biggest haul was recorded by the 10th Battalion of the Sibu GOF, during Op Libas on June 24, where an illegal logging site was raided, resulting in the arrest of three men, aged 39 to 57, and the seizure of 350 logs. "Also seized was a wood-cutting machine, bringing the estimated total value of the seized items to RM3.504mil, based on market price,' he said in a statement on Monday (June 30). Under Op Taring Alpha on June 23, the GOF Investigation Branch raided premises here and seized 32,736 litres of various brands of liquor without customs duty approval, in addition to arresting five local men, aged between 26 and 36. "Also seized was a lorry, and the estimated total value of the seizure was RM1,457,648, according to market price. Through Op Taring Bravo, in Miri on June 25, a team from the GOF Miri raided premises in the district, arresting two local men, aged 32 and 45, and seizing 39,300 litres of diesel stored without a permit. A diesel storage tank and a lorry were also seized during the operation, bringing the total value of the seizure to RM486,065. Under Op Taring Awas on June 28, a team from the 11th Battalion of the Kuching GOF arrested three local men, aged between 23 and 36, in a vehicle in Lundu, and seized a transparent packet containing a substance believed to be methamphetamine, weighing 0.32g. The total value of the seizure, including the vehicle, was RM50,100. He said that, from Jan 1 to June 30, Sarawak GOF recorded total seizures amounting to RM290.3mil, involving 236 cases and 355 arrests. Sarawak GOF foils attempts to smuggle contraband goods worth nearly RM12m

KUCHING: The Sarawak General Operations Force (GOF) has foiled several smuggling attempts involving various goods worth RM11.93 million during 'Op Taring Alpha' and 'Op Taring Awas/Batas' carried out at multiple locations across the state. Its deputy commander ACP Rosdi Inai said in the first operation carried out at 4.30 am yesterday, the GOF detained two trailer lorries in Sri Aman suspected of transporting smuggled goods. 'Checks on both vehicles uncovered 21,500 cartons of white cigarettes and 51,216 litres of liquor, believed to have been brought in without the payment of duties and valid permits. 'Two local men aged 44 and 50 were also detained, while the two trailer lorries along with four containers were seized. The seizure is estimated to be worth RM10.47 million,' he said in a statement here today. Rosdi said in the second operation on June 8 at about 9.30 pm, the GOF detained two lorries in Bau suspected of transporting rattan without valid documents, and arrested two local men aged 25 and 33. 'Inspections uncovered 15 tonnes of rattan, with the total seizure valued at RM620,000,' he said. Meanwhile, Rosdi said in two separate operations on June 6, the GOF seized frozen products in Bau district and arrested a 49-year-old local man. 'At the first location, a lorry carrying 7,800 kilogrammes of frozen meat without a permit was detained at 10.05 pm, with the seizure valued at approximately RM488,600. 'At the second location, at 6.10 am in Padawan, a 27-year-old man was detained. A Toyota Harrier SUV, reported to have been fraudulently obtained, was seized. The vehicle is estimated to be worth RM175,000,' he said. He added that all seized items were handed over to the Sri Aman Police headquarters, Kuching Division of Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), Bau Branch of Sarawak Veterinary Department and Padawan Police headquarters for further action and investigation.
