Sagah: Jalan Padawan project on track under new contractor
Sagah confirms that the project, now under new management, is showing positive progress based on updates from the Sarawak JKR. – Photo by Chimon Upon SERIAN (July 11): Phase 1 of the Jalan Padawan upgrading project is progressing smoothly under a newly appointed rescue contractor, said Sarawak Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn. The Tarat assemblyman confirmed that the project, now under new management, is showing positive progress based on updates from the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR). 'Based on reports from JKR Sarawak, I believe the project is going on smoothly (under the new contractor),' he said when met after officiating the 'Petronas Memacu Kehidupan Gawai 2025' event at Kampung Tarat Melawi here today. However, Sagah noted that weather disruptions have occasionally slowed progress. 'Certain days, the weather doesn't permit us to accelerate the works,' he said, adding that rising public expectations often lead to complaints. He stressed that quality remains a top priority, and the contractor has been given the necessary time to ensure the project meets required standards. RM1 mln Grand Arch to boost identity, economy of Kota Sentosa, says rep

KUCHING (July 4): Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has held a discussion with officers from the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) to review and refine the proposed design of the Grand Arch, set to serve as the main gateway to the Batu Tujuh Commercial area. The RM1 million project, funded under the 2023 Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), is aimed at enhancing the identity and economic vibrancy of the Kota Sentosa constituency. According to a statement, the Grand Arch is envisioned as an iconic landmark that will greet residents and visitors while reflecting the community's pride and heritage. Strategically located at the entrance to the busy commercial hub, the structure is expected to increase foot traffic, draw tourists, and spur local economic activity. 'A thoughtfully designed gateway does more than mark an entrance, it transforms perceptions, creates a sense of arrival, and showcases our cultural heritage and progress,' Yap said during the meeting. He said the project would place strong emphasis on safety, aesthetics, and long-term sustainability to ensure lasting value for the community. 'Since the start of my service, I have remained focused on implementing initiatives that uplift our community. Sarawak vows to link rural communities with roads by 2030
MIRI: The Sarawak government has pledged to connect all, or at least most, rural communities in the state to the road network by 2030, as part of an infrastructure push supported by nine regional development agencies. State Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said each agency has been allocated RM1.5 billion, stressing that the funds must be used efficiently and without delay. 'It becomes an issue if these allocations are not spent. Our Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg expects the funds to be used promptly. 'When people are aware of these allocations, they expect action, improved roads, better access and better livelihoods. If not, they'll take to social media to express their frustration,' he said. Speaking at a Highland Development Agency (HDA) planning session here today, Uggah urged government departments to resolve project delays through on-the-ground coordination. HDA, one of the agencies driving the state's rural transformation agenda, has already committed RM1 billion to infrastructure and economic initiatives, with the remaining RM500 million expected to be utilised by mid-2026. He noted that much of Baram, in the Miri Division, still relies on former logging roads, many of which require urgent upgrades, maintenance or replacement of wooden bridges. 'The situation is complex. We must find a long-term solution for road maintenance,' he said, adding that he will lead a Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) team to Bario in July for an on-site assessment. Beyond connectivity, Uggah highlighted Bario's untapped economic potential in agriculture and tourism, particularly in coffee and passion fruit cultivation, buffalo farming and handicrafts. He also noted the potential for buffalo milk cheese production, referencing a pilot project at the Meragang breeding station in Limbang. 'There's a large population of wild buffaloes owned by locals. I suggest looking into domesticating them,' he said. Uggah also urged local communities and agencies to leverage the region's rich cultural heritage to develop sustainable tourism. Among those in attendance at the session were Baram MP Datuk Anyie Ngau, Mulu assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala, Marudi assemblyman Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil, Telang Usan assemblyman Datuk Dennis Ngau and Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA) chief executive officer Datuk Ismawi Ismuni.

Package A1A of Second Trunk Road project shows steady progress, says S'wak deputy minister
Aidel (left) during the site visit at the Package A1A section of the Second Trunk Road Package project. – Photo by Mohd Faisal Ahmad KOTA SAMARAHAN (June 11): Package A1A of the Second Trunk Road (STR) project, comprising the new Batang Samarahan Bridge and a 9km dual carriageway to Batang Sadong, has reached 11.61 per cent completion as of today, slightly ahead of its scheduled progress of 11.43 per cent. Sarawak Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Ports Development, Datuk Aidel Lariwoo, expressed satisfaction with the project's progress, highlighting that it is 0.18 per cent ahead of schedule. 'This reflects the steady work by the contractor and a consistent supply of materials,' he told reporters after a site visit and briefing by Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) at the developer's office here today. He noted that Package A1A is a key component of the broader Second Trunk Road network, which aims to provide an alternative route for residents in coastal and interior areas currently underserved by the Pan Borneo Highway and Coastal Road Network. Aidel also visited the adjacent D3C package, a 7km single carriageway linking Batang Samarahan to Batang Sejingkat. He reported that progress there was generally on track, with actual completion at 23.09 per cent against a scheduled 23.13 per cent. 'There is a very minor delay of 0.04 per cent, but we have advised the contractor to increase their daily supply rate. 'The current rate is slightly below what is required to complete the embankment work efficiently,' he said. He further explained that the Second Trunk Road spans several administrative divisions and will eventually connect Sejingkat to Batang Sadong, Sebuyau, and onward to Betong. Once completed, the road will serve as a direct alternative route for motorists travelling between Sarawak's northern and central coastal regions. Aidel revealed that the full stretch from Batang Samarahan to Batang Sadong measures 23km, consisting of the current 9km A1A package and the upcoming 13km A1B section. 'Plans are also underway to extend a dual carriageway from Batang Sadong to Batang Lupar in Sebuyau, covering another 35km. 'This second trunk road project is designed to complement the Pan Borneo and Coastal Road networks, particularly for areas not directly served by those routes. 'Once completed, it will transform connectivity for people in these regions,' he said. He also pointed out that another key segment – a dual carriageway linking Serian, Gedong, and Samarahan – is currently under construction and expected to bolster regional integration under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) and the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030). Sarawak allocates RM42.24 bln for 500 infrastructure projects under 12MP, says Uggah

KUCHING (May 28): A total of RM42.24 billion has been allocated by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) for the implementation of 500 projects under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. The State Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, the projects comprise 244 under Development Expenditure, 186 categorised as People's Projects (Projek Rakyat), while another 70 are being financed through alternative funding mechanisms. 'The overall breakdown includes approximately 301 road projects valued at RM28.03 billion, 70 bridge projects worth RM5.76 billion, 104 building projects amounting to RM3.68 billion, 23 river infrastructure projects valued at RM4.42 billion, and two airport developments with a combined cost of RM350.82 million,' he added when delivering his winding-up speech during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today. He said as of now, 218 projects have been completed, 122 are under construction, and 160 remain in the pre-contract stage. This marks a notable increase of 15 completed projects and 24 new projects that have entered the construction phase since the last DUN sitting, he said. He also said the progress reflects the Sarawak government's strong commitment to delivering foundational infrastructure to drive economic growth and improve the well-being of its people. He also highlighted the government's emphasis on bridge construction to enhance connectivity, particularly in rural and remote areas of the state. 'To support this initiative, a total of RM4.97 billion has been allocated for the construction of 16 major bridges across Sarawak,' he said. Five of these bridges have already been completed and opened to the public, namely the Marudi Bridge, Muara Lassa Bridge, Bintulu Jepak Bridge, Batang Rajang Bridge which is now known as Jambatan Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang Bin Tuanku Haji Othman and Batang Saribas Bridge, which opened on 25 May. Another five bridges are expected to be completed by the end of this year. These include the Sungai Lingga Bridge, Batang Kemena (Sebauh) Bridge, Batang Igan Bridge, Sungai Limbang Bridge, and Batang Lupar Bridge. 'The remaining six which are the Batang Paloh Bridge, Batang Lupar Bridge (second phase), Sejingkat Bridge, Batang Krian Bridge, Batang Saribas Bridge (second phase), and Batang Rambungan Bridge, are scheduled for completion by 2026,' he said. Uggah said these bridge projects represent significant progress in strengthening transportation networks and connectivity across the state.
