Abg Jo calls Long Loyang's hydrogen-powered hybrid clinic a working model of inclusive energy transition
Abang Johari (second right) joins fellow delegates at the World Hydrogen Asia 2025 conference. – Ukas photo KUCHING (July 10): Malaysia's first hydrogen-powered hybrid clinic in Long Loyang has been described as a working model of inclusive energy transition. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the Long Loyang rural health clinic has quietly been making history since 2022. 'Running 24 hours a day on green hydrogen, powered by sunlight and rainwater. This is Malaysia's first hydrogen-powered hybrid clinic,' he shared in his keynote address titled 'Sarawak's Hydrogen Vision: Catalysing Green Growth for Asean and Beyond' at the World Hydrogen Asia 2025 in Tokyo, Japan, today. He explained that the modular system produces between 25 and 30 kilowatt-hours of power daily, supplying clean and reliable electricity to support critical equipment, vaccine refrigeration, lighting, and emergency care services for over 2,000 residents in the area. 'What began as an ambitious idea has become a working model of what the energy transition looks like when it reaches everyone—even the last mile. 'This is more than a project—it is a promise fulfilled, and a symbol of what's possible when innovation meets inclusion,' he stressed. The Long Loyang clinic was one of several developments highlighted by the Premier in Sarawak's push towards a sustainable hydrogen economy. He noted that the initiatives are part of the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (SHER), which was launched earlier this year. SHER, he said, aims to position Sarawak as a cost-competitive and scalable hydrogen producer by leveraging its abundant hydropower and solar energy, natural gas reserves, and geological potential for carbon capture and storage. Abang Johari also stressed the need for accountability and phased implementation across Sarawak's hydrogen initiatives. 'All of these initiatives and implementation are being monitored and will follow a phased approach with clear accountability,' he said. He added that the hydrogen roadmap is aligned with the broader Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030, a whole-of-economy plan to transition the state toward a green, inclusive, and resilient future. 'We see hydrogen as a key enabler of this transition—linking clean energy with industrial transformation, trade, innovation, and economic diversification,' he said.

Sarawak launches Sustainability Blueprint 2030
KUCHING: Sarawak has become the first state in Malaysia to launch a Sustainability Blueprint 2030, marking a major step towards building a greener and more sustainable future. Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the blueprint, developed by the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak (MEESty), features 10 strategic thrusts, 48 strategies and 111 action plans. 'This comprehensive document, meticulously crafted and recently finalised by our MEESty, serves as our strategic roadmap for Sarawak's profound transition to a green economy. 'The Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030 encompasses every facet of our sustainability agenda, designed to integrate green principles into the very fabric of our society and economy,' he said in his keynote address at the Asia Carbon Conference 2025 here today. He said the blueprint sets a strong example for environmental action at the state level. Abang Johari said the strategic roadmap for Sarawak's profound transition to a green economy also outlines the state's commitment to accelerating the renewable energy transition, advancing carbon capture and storage, as well as enhancing forest and land conservation. It includes promoting green industries and investments, building sustainable cities through circular economy practices and developing a future-ready workforce through education, skills and research. Looking ahead, he said Sarawak has pledged to publish a comprehensive Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory report by 2027 to track the state's emissions and stay within its carbon budget. Meanwhile, he said the Sarawak government is finalising its own Carbon Plan aimed at facilitating carbon market investments in the state. 'The Carbon Plan is pivotal to offer a detailed implementation framework designed to catalyse carbon trading and foster a vibrant carbon market. 'Central to the Carbon Plan is its focus on establishing a well-regulated and investor-friendly carbon market that balances supply and demand, thereby incentivising emissions reductions and attracting green investments to Sarawak,' he added.
