S'wak to launch sustainability blueprint to drive green economy transition

KUCHING: The Sarawak government is set to launch the Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030 at the end of May, which will serve as a strategic roadmap for the state's transition to a green economy.
The Sarawak Public Communications Unit said the blueprint will be launched by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The blueprint features 10 strategic thrusts, 48 strategies, and 111 action plans, with targets including the development of 10 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity and achieving a 70 per cent renewable energy mix by 2030.
"Recently finalised by the Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak Ministry, the blueprint was a key point of discussion during a high-level roundtable session held earlier today at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
"The session, led by the Sarawak Premier along with his delegation, brought together scholars and experts to explore sustainability and green development strategies," it said in a statement today.
It said the session marked a pivotal step in strengthening academic-policy collaboration, particularly in the area of sustainable growth and climate resilience.
"The dialogue at LSE emphasised partnerships and knowledge exchange to advance the state's sustainability ambitions, with a shared commitment to balancing economic growth, environmental protection, and social inclusion," it said.
The event was part of the Premier's working visit to the United Kingdom, which began on Tuesday.
The statement added that LSE also expressed strong interest in potential collaboration with Sarawak in areas such as forest conservation, financial services, education, and climate change.

Bintulu power capacity to reach 1GW by 2035 for industrial growth

BINTULU: Sarawak is set to develop two gas-fired power plants, each with a capacity of 500 megawatts, raising Bintulu's total power generation to one gigawatt by 2035. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stated that this initiative aims to meet both local energy demands and investor needs, particularly in Bintulu's expanding industrial and green technology sectors. 'The comprehensive development plan also includes the construction of an international school in Bintulu, to attract professional workers and foreign investors to reside and settle here,' he said during the opening of a hotel in Bintulu. Abang Johari highlighted Bintulu's transformation from a natural gas discovery hub into a thriving industrial centre, driven by investments in liquefied natural gas (LNG) and infrastructure like ports and hotels. He noted that this growth extends beyond Kidurong to Samalaju, positioning Bintulu as a key economic zone. To further enhance connectivity, a hydrogen-powered autonomous rail transit (ART) system will be introduced under the 13th Malaysia Plan, linking Bintulu, Kidurong, and Samalaju. 'Bintulu will be the second city after Kuching to adopt the ART system, improving accessibility and sustainable development,' he added. Abang Johari also emphasised Bintulu's global recognition as one of 36 low-carbon industrial clusters, reinforcing its status as a strategic investment destination. – Bernama

Bintulu's Power Capacity To Hit 1GW By 2035 To Drive Industrial Growth

KUCHING, July 23 (Bernama) -- Sarawak is set to develop two gas-fired power plants, with a capacity of 500 megawatts each, which will increase Bintulu's total power generation capacity to one gigawatt by 2035. Sarawak Premier, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, said that the initiative is aimed not only at meeting the needs of the local population, but also at fulfilling the demands of investors, particularly in the rapidly growing industrial and green technology sectors in Bintulu. 'The comprehensive development plan also includes the construction of an international school in Bintulu, to attract professional workers and foreign investors to reside and settle here,' he said, during the opening of a hotel in Bintulu, today. Abang Johari, recalling Bintulu's development history, said that it began with the discovery of natural gas and subsequent investments in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, which spurred the construction of ports and other essential facilities, such as hotels and accommodation for industry players. He noted that this investment-driven development model has transformed Bintulu into a new growth hub, encompassing not only the Kidurong area, but also extending to Samalaju. 'This rapid development necessitates the provision of comfortable facilities, including international-class hotels, to meet the needs of tourists, delegations and investors. 'To further support Bintulu's economic growth, a high-tech autonomous rail transit (ART) system, powered by hydrogen, will be implemented under the 13th Malaysia Plan, connecting three strategic locations - Bintulu, Kidurong and Samalaju,' he said. He added that Bintulu will be the second city after Kuching to have the ART system, which will enhance accessibility, facilitate movement, and promote sustainable development. 'As I mentioned in Miri recently, Bintulu is now globally recognised as one of the 36 low-carbon industrial clusters in the world. This demonstrates that Bintulu has become a key global focus,' he said.

Close Federal Ties Prove GPS Is A Respected Political Force

GENERAL MIRI, July 22 (Bernama) -- The close cooperation between Sarawak and the Federal Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim proves that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is a respected and formidable political force. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the appointment of Sarawak native Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof as Deputy Prime Minister, along with the presence of several federal ministers from the state, was a significant recognition of Sarawak. 'Never before has a Sarawakian been entrusted with the responsibility of Deputy Prime Minister. This shows that Sarawak under the GPS platform is a respected political power,' he said in his speech at the 62nd Sarawak Day celebration here tonight. As the head of the GPS government, he said the strong collaboration with the Federal Government would continue in the interest of both the nation and Sarawak, adding that the state's pursuit of prosperity would not hinder national development. 'The increase in Sarawak's revenue, including through the state sales tax, will not reduce the federal revenue as the Federal Government has ample room to boost its income without burdening the people,' he said. Abang Johari also rebuked claims by certain quarters that Sarawak was being 'excessive' or greedy in asserting its rights, stressing that the demands were based on the Federal Constitution and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). He said GPS would continue fighting for Sarawak's rights through negotiations with the Federal Government, guided by the MA63 framework. 'Sarawak has successfully regained nine rights enshrined under MA63, and efforts will continue to reclaim all those that have been eroded,' he said. He also reflected on the key decision made by Sarawak's leaders 62 years ago to join in forming Malaysia for greater security and prosperity.
