Beware of traffic challan scam

Coimbatore: Sathish Kumar, 45, of Srinagar at Irugur in the city, was unsuspicious when he received a message on WhatsApp on Thursday regarding a traffic violation - red light jumping to be specific - he was booked for and a fine of Rs1,000. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It contained files to download the (mParivahan) mobile application to view the challan details and pay the fine. Thinking that the message was from the concerned govt department, Sathish Kumar downloaded the file. In no time, he lost Rs1 lakh to cyber fraudsters, who stole all data from his mobile phone and withdrew the amount from his bank account in two transactions. He promptly lodged a complaint with the city cybercrime police. Like him, 41 other city residents have fallen prey to the similar designs of the cyber fraudsters, who keep changing their strategies to trap people and loot their hard-earned money. According to the city cybercrime police, traffic challan scam is the latest trend across the country. They suspect it to be the handiwork of a section of cyber fraudsters from the north or northeast parts of India who randomly send traffic challan messages containing files through WhatsApp or SMS to drain unsuspecting people's bank accounts. P A Arun, inspector of police, city cybercrime police station, said the cyber fraudsters were earlier using fake online trading mobile applications to trap people. Many city residents had downloaded those apps and lost several crores of rupees to the cyber scamsters. "One has to be very cautious. And don't download any .apk files from strangers on your mobile phones, as it will help the cyber fraudsters easily steal all the data and withdraw large amounts from your bank accounts without your knowledge. The cybercrime police said the traffic challan (mParivahan fake app) scam was trending for the past four months. "We have received 42 complaints till date. Demand for establishing dry port in Tiruchi gathers momentum

Though the Trade and industrial forums continue to raise the demand for establishing a dry port in Tiruchi, it is yet to become a reality. Tiruchi is one of the important regions in the State that exports various items including engineering equipment, vegetables, fruits and others. According to the National Horticulture Database released by the National Horticulture Board of India, Tiruchi produced 112.62 million metric tonnes of fruits and 204.96 million metric tonnes of vegetables in 2023-24. While exporters prefer to export engineering products through sea ports in the State, some vegetables and fruits are exported to Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and others by flights. Though the exporters of perishable commodities prefer to send to their overseas clients by flights form Tiruchi, value-added agricultural products such as foods, millets ad biscuits are being exported through Chennai, Tuticorin and Cochin ports. Similarly, spare parts of auto mobiles, fabricated materials and other engineering products are exported through Chennai and Tuticorin. According to an estimate, 40 to 50 containers, measuring 25 tonnes each, are transported by roads to the seaports for exporting to various countries per month from Tiruchi. Industrialists and exporters find it difficult to transport their products by spending huge amounts to sea ports. They are of the view that if Inland Container Depot (dry port) is established in Tiruchi the exporters can complete the process of exporting them in Tiruchi itself, thereby saving huge sum and energy. 'The volume of exports from Tiruchi continues to register upward trends. It takes at least a week for the exporters to complete the formalities at the sea port. The establishment of dry port in Tiruchi will facilitate the exporters to complete the process quickly,' says G. Sathish Kumar, secretary, Export, Import Federation, Tiruchi. The exporters says the dry port will bolster the region's logistics infrastructure to support industrial development and export growth. They point out that the dry port established near Tiruppur has turned out to be a great support for the exporters of Tiruppur and Coimbatore to send their consignments to their overseas claims. Kanagasabapathy, former Chairman, Tiruchi Trade Centre, said that various industrial forums had been fighting for the establishment of dry port in Tiruchi for so far. It required at least 100 acre for the facility. The State and Central governments should take effective steps to fulfil the demand. It could be established at SIPCOT industrial park near Manapparai or at a convenient place with highway access.

TN BJP holds boat rally in Chennai to support Operation Sindoor

In a show of solidarity with India's coastal communities and maritime heritage, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organised a symbolic boat rally in support of the Operation Sindoor on Sunday. Though police denied permission for a full-scale rally, the event was conducted in a limited stretch of sea off the Kasimedu fishing harbour in Chennai. The event was coordinated by Tamil Nadu BJP State Secretary Sathish Kumar and led by Tamil Nadu BJP Fishermen Wing President Munusamy. Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy, National Co-Incharge for BJP Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, attended the rally as chief guest, along with senior party leaders including BJP State Spokesperson ANS Prasad, Sports Wing President Amar Prasad, and North Chennai East District President NL Nagaraj. Speaking after the rally, Reddy emphasised the BJP's commitment to empowering the fishing community and strengthening coastal security. 'Operation Sindoor symbolises our respect for the seas and the communities that depend on them. The BJP will continue to work closely with fishermen to ensure their welfare and safety,' he said. Following the rally, BJP leaders and participants gathered with fishermen and their families to listen to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Mann Ki Baat radio address. The session turned into an interactive discussion, where Reddy elaborated on the various government schemes and initiatives highlighted by the Prime Minister, particularly those that benefit coastal and fishing communities. Fishermen present at the event expressed their appreciation for the Prime Minister's focus on India's heritage, cultural unity, and economic empowerment. Several attendees pledged to regularly tune in to Mann Ki Baat at their homes going forward. 'The Prime Minister speaks for every Indian, and his words resonate deeply with us,' said one of the fishermen. 'We feel seen, heard, and respected.' The event served as a boost to the BJP's grassroots outreach among Tamil Nadu's coastal population, reaffirming its focus on community engagement and inclusive development.
