Thane municipal corporation launches organic farming project
Thane: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Wednesday announced the launch of its experimental organic farming project on a 1.5-acre civic-owned plot in Patlipada, along the densely populated Ghodbunder Road. Believed to be the first initiative of its kind by any urban local body in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region—and possibly the state—the project is the brainchild of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. He proposed the idea during the Vrikshavalli exhibition held in Feb this year, encouraging the corporation to set an example in sustainable urban farming. The project was initiated in April by TMC's gardens department under the supervision of Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao. "A vacant plot was identified in Patlipada, and a crop plan was prepared based on the region's soil and climate," a civic official said. "Vegetables such as brinjal, okra, tomato, cabbage, sweet potato, and yam are being cultivated, along with leafy amaranthus and fenugreek. There are also designated plots for rice and gram cultivation. " Fruit-bearing trees such as mango, lemon, banana, fig, custard apple, coconut, and pomegranate have also been planted. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do you have a mouse? Many urban residents have little or no knowledge of farming. This project will offer them hands-on exposure to cultivation, composting, and water management," said an official. All produce will be donated to orphanages and old-age homes. The farm is open to the public Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 5pm.

Thane civic body vows to complete drain cleaning, infra work before monsoon
THANE: The Thane Municipal Corporation announced on Friday the cleaning of all drains and the completion of pending infrastructure works in the city and on the Ghodbunder highway. This includes operating the crucial Kasarvadavali flyover in the next few weeks to ensure zero inconvenience to lakhs of Thane residents during the monsoon. TOI (local edition) highlighted the issues on Friday after the corporation admitted to cleaning just 51% of drains in the city and the delayed schedule of ongoing works on the GB highway, which also raised concerns about potential waterlogging during the upcoming monsoon. Several local elected representatives also flagged the issue. Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao confirmed on Friday that all key road repairs, underground drainage connections, and cleaning works would be wrapped up by May 30. He emphasized that strict instructions have been issued to all infrastructure agencies, including MMRDA, to avoid any delays. "The flyover bypassing the crucial Kasarvadavali junction on the Ghodbunder highway will be completed by June 5, taking all outbound traffic on the elevated stretch, while local vehicles will use the slip road. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Descubra o suplemento natural que está transformando rotinas AlwaysFit Undo This will significantly improve traffic flow towards Ghodbunder on the highway," Rao stated. He added that culvert cleaning is underway, and new drainage links underneath the highway will be completed within the deadline. Additional Commissioner Prashant Rode, who joined former MP Rajan Vichare for an inspection on Friday evening, assured that areas prone to waterlogging would be safeguarded by implementing comprehensive drain cleaning measures. In addition, prominent lakes like the Siddheswar Lake are also being desilted, and all outlets discharging sewage water into the lake are being plugged, Vichare said.
