CCTV installed at famous North Wales slate quarry after trespass incidents
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info CCTV has been installed at a famous quarry after trespassing incidents. Vivian Quarry, on the edge of Eryri (Snowdonia) is part of the vast Dinorwig slate complex, once the world's second largest slate mine. Since the Gwynedd slate quarry closed in 1960, rain and underwater springs have filled it 19 metres deep, covering old buildings and mining equipment. The site is now an extraordinary time capsule for an industry that once roofed the world and there is dive attraction there run by Scuba Scape. But they have hit out at people entering the site for "illegal" fishing. This has seen them install CCTV at various locations with a warning they will pursue prosecutions of those caught. The company said: "We've been made aware of illegal fishing and theft of our fish from the quarry. Not only that but we've now found three fish dead underwater with hooks in their mouths. "Fishing at Vivian is prohibited as is trespassing, and you are committing not only a crime but also a civil offense in which we fully intend to prosecute individuals found not only breaking into the quarry but also pursuing criminal prosecution for fishing on private land. "We have now installed a number of CCTV cameras ran by mains and solar throughout the site but mainly focusing on the gates and around the area where the road goes past the quarry, this is backed up with AI recognition and also a direct track to the security firm. "This behaviour will not be tolerated and we will 100% pursue all avenues in catching these people." Scuba Scape are turning the site - situated near the Llanberis Lake Railway station and the National Slate Museum - into an adventure hub. (Image: Dave Phillips/Phoenix Watersports) An escape room concept, Scuba Escape, was first launched at the quarry in 2021 during the pandemic. Pitched at skilled scuba divers, this featured six, 240-minute games which tested diving skills such as buoyancy and navigation. They are developing a new attraction will offer an entirely different means of descending into the quarry's depths, obviating the need for specialised scuba diver training – though the partners are staying tight-lipped about the technology involved. The company want to showcase the heritage of the site alongside providing exciting adventures. 'Next-level adventures' and stand-up comedy to be showcased at scenic Eryri quarry
A scenic slate quarry on the edge of Eryri is to open its gates to the public this month. For 10 days from June 17, visitors can enter free of charge to get a flavour of the innovations and experiences planned there. Operators of Vivian Quarry, Llanberis, say they are introducing new technologies to bring 'next-level adventures' to the site. These include a 'world-first' underwater museum and an escape room in the 19 metre-deep lake created when the quarry flooded. Details have yet to be released but both activities will cater for visitors as young as 10. The operator, Scuba Scape, is promising 'immersive technology' to get people into the water, with museum concept images showing 'divers' walking along a submerged gangway in the lake. The company said: 'With significant investments made to enhance the site, Vivian Quarry is poised to become the flagship destination for world-first, ground-breaking technology set to roll out globally.' Vivian's new attractions are due to open from early July. An eclectic range of other activities also also planned as part of the site's development, including comedy nights, workshops and concerts. Scuba Scape said it aim to provide opportunities for relaxation, solitude and 'connection with family and friends'. The company added: 'These enriching experiences are designed to ground visitors and create lasting memories.' Katie Gill, operations manager, said people coming to the open days be the first to learn about the attractions – and will be able book slots. Katie hopes the local community will quickly start 'making this space their own' and enjoy all that it has to offer. 'So much love, care, and commitment to heritage has gone into this site. It's amazing that North Wales gets to be the flagship site, which is a testament to how special, unique, and deserving this incredible part of Wales truly is.' Vivian was part of the sprawling Dinorwic slate complex that was worked from 1787. Since closing in 1960, rain and underwater springs covered the site's old buildings and mining equipment, turning it into a time capsule for an industry that once roofed the world. Submerged below are old stone blast huts, decaying mining trucks and more. Experienced divers have been able to explore the quarry lake but it's now hoped this lost world can be opened up to visitors without specialist scuba diving knowledge. In a nod to the site's mining heritage, a winch machine weighing more than 10 tonnes has been rescued and relocated within the quarry. Katie also happens to be resident MC of Vivian's upcoming monthly comedy nights, starting on Friday, June 20. She said: 'Comedy is my love language; laughing with people is the most beautiful connection. 'To get to bring that to this site that envelops you is a wonderful opportunity. And if it doesn't go well, I can throw myself in the water!' 'World's first' underwater museum to open in Wales quarry
An abandoned slate quarry in north Wales that's been submerged underwater for the last 20 years is set to open up as an underwater museum. Vivian Quarry in Gwynedd, once part of the world's second-largest slate mine, is now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's been quietly flooded for two decades, hiding old mining buildings, tools and even a circular blast shelter beneath 19 meters of water. Soon, the historic site will be accessible to the public, where visitors as young as ten will be able to dive in and explore the ruins of the former quarry. Following its closure in 1960, the quarry has been open to experienced divers for the past 12 years. However, thanks to new technology developed by XPLOR Group, anyone - including complete beginners and kids - will be able explore the museum with no prior scuba training after a 10-minute safety briefing. The diving centre, run by Scuba Scape, is opening up this summer and promises a 'world first' experience. Speaking to North Wales Live, a spokesperson from Scuba Scape said: 'Our collaboration [with XPLOR Group] has led to the commercialisation of a unique underwater gaming programme and innovative technology. 'Over the past eight months, we have implemented intense safety procedures and conducted rigorous testing of every component in some of the harshest underwater conditions.' In addition to its museum features, the site will also host a one-of-a-kind underwater escape room, allowing divers to participate in interactive games as they tour the remains of the quarry. Bookings are expected to open soon on Scuba Scape's website, with tickets priced at £73.36. It comes after a lesser-known theme park in the UK that costs just £13.95 to enter has been hailed one of the best in the world - and you can even bring your pooch along for the ride. The Milky Way Adventure Park, located in North Devon, offers a mix of indoor and outdoor rides, shows, activities and play areas at a fraction of the cost of its big-name competitors. The amusement park was first launched as a farm attraction in July 1984 by the Stanbury family, but it has since grown in size and popularity with around £2 million invested in new attractions and upgrades over recent years.
