Former village panchayat president ends life in Tiruvarur
A 60-year-old shopkeeper and former panchayat president from Nemmeli village near Mannargudi allegedly ended his life on Monday, reportedly due to pressure from private bank over pending loan repayments. The deceased, identified as Jegatheesan, was running a grocery store in the village and had reportedly taken a loan from a private microfinance firm for expanding his business. According to his family, bank representatives visited his home and allegedly warned him they would return in the evening to collect the dues. Distressed over the exchange, Jegatheesan left home saying he was going to purchase supplies and later ended his life near a private Higher Secondary School grounds in Mannargudi. He was found unconscious by local residents and rushed to the Government Hospital in Mannargudi, where he was declared brought dead. His son, Abishek, has filed a police complaint demanding action against those he holds responsible for his father's death. The body was sent for post-mortem. Police have registered a case under BNSS Section 194 and said all angles are being investigated. 'The matter is under investigation,' Superintendent of Police Garad Karun told The Hindu. Meanwhile, P.R. Pandian, General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Cauvery Farmers Association, condemned the incident and said: 'This is not an isolated case. Similar loan-related deaths have occurred elsewhere. The government must enforce stricter control over private recovery practices and ensure compensation for the family.' Rs 264 cr allocated for school infrastructure development: Tripura CM
Agartala (Tripura) [India], June 18 (ANI): Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday said that the state education department is working with priority to provide quality education to students, and under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, special emphasis has also been given to the digital education system. 'Work is being done with importance to develop infrastructure in the state's schools. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has started the 'Pariksha Pe Charcha' program to reduce the pressure on students during exams. He started this program with the aim of taking exams as a challenge and not making them a subject of pressure. And parents or guardians always try to ensure that their children do well,' said CM Saha. CM Saha, who is also the state education minister, said this after the felicitation programme for meritorious students who passed the Madhyamik and Higher Secondary examinations, which was held today at Town Hall. Saha hoped that they would achieve better results in the future. Along with this, he called for fair competition in studies in a healthy environment. The Chief Minister said that many people do well in real life despite getting fewer marks in the exam. 'Patience and diligence are the keys to success in life. Our Prime Minister says that good and talented children from families that are not involved in politics should be brought into politics. This will help us get out of the precarious situation in politics. In the future, talented students will have to use their talent, knowledge, and intelligence properly for the development of society and the country. The education department of the state government is trying to provide quality education. There is no dearth of talent among the children of Tripura. They just need a proper platform, and that is what the state government is trying to provide,' he said. He further said that due to the earnest efforts of the Prime Minister, the National Education Policy 2020 has been launched in the country and has been prepared based on the country's culture and tradition. Students will benefit from this. 'Various schools have been upgraded to English medium. Through the Super 30 project, 1 IIT, 3 NIT, and 3 MBBS seats have been achieved in the financial year 2024-25. The Chief Minister's Merit Award has been introduced. Common question papers have been introduced in schools. Rs 153 crore has been spent on the construction of new buildings in 44 schools. Apart from this, infrastructure will be developed in about 30 more schools. An allocation of about Rs 264 crore has been made for this. This year, about 345 schools have achieved 100 per cent results in secondary education. The total pass rate is 86.53%. 39 schools have achieved 100% results in higher secondary education. The pass rate is 79.29%,' he added. Centralised admission portal for UG admission in West Bengal to open on June 17
The West Bengal government on Thursday said the centralised admission portal for enrolment in higher educational institutions for undergraduate courses will be launched on June 17. Higher education department in a statement said 460 state-run and state-aided colleges under 17 universities will be included in the portal. 'Education minister Bratya Basu is expected to be present at the launch of the portal for admission of 2025-26 academic year at 2 pm on June 17,' an official said. The Class 12 higher secondary results of the state board were published on May 7. This year, 4,73,919 students appeared for their WBCHSE Higher Secondary exam; of them, 4,30,286 have passed, resulting in a pass percentage of 90.79 per cent. Last year, the pass percentage was 90 per cent. This year, science recorded a pass percentage of 99.46 per cent, followed by commerce with 97.52 per cent, and arts with 88.25 per cent. In the centralised admission portal, a student can choose more than one college and opt for several subjects. He or she will have the advantage of automatically upgrading to a higher-ranked college of choice after being initially admitted to one higher educational institution on the basis of vacancy of seats. 'For this, he won't have to depend on any third party,' the official said adding the portal will be a transparent one. Education Minister Bratya Basu earlier said due to some technical work, the launch has been delayed by a few days. 'If you remember, last year the online portal opened on June 19. And, the higher secondary exam results were announced on May 8. So if you compare with the proceedings last year, we are not late,' Basu had told reporters.

Rewari tops HBSE Class 10 results; girls outperform boys in Haryana
. BHIWANI: The Haryana Board of School Education (HBSE) has announced the Class 10 results, with girls once again outperforming boys. This year, 92.49% of students passed the exam. Among the districts, Rewari secured the top position, followed by Charkhi Dadri in second place and Mahendragarh in third. In contrast, the Nuh district recorded the lowest performance. According to the list released by the board, 17 of the 20 toppers are girls, while only 3 are boys. A total of 20 students were declared toppers in the HBSE Class 10 results . Among them, Rohit from Hisar, Mahi from Ambala, and Roma and Tanya from Jhajjar secured the first position, each scoring 497 out of 500 marks. In the second position, six students scored 496 marks. These include Akshit Sahrawat from Panipat, Yogesh from Kaithal, Rinku from Panipat, Divyanshi and Diksha from Rohtak, and Sunaina from Hisar. Students from rural areas had a pass percentage of 92.35%, whereas urban students recorded 92.83%. In terms of district performance, Rewari ranked first with 96.85%, Charkhi Dadri second with 96.08%, Mahendragarh third with 95.78%, and Nuh was at the bottom with 73.9%. Talking to TOI, board secretary Munish Nagpal said that this year, elaborate arrangements were made to prevent cheating, and action has been initiated against teachers and others found involved in malpractice. 'Therefore, we can say that it was wonderful compared to the last few years. Moreover, the pass percentage of agriculture, animal husbandry, music, dance, and skill-based courses is 100%, besides 99.68% in science, 99.27% in maths, 99% in drawing, and 99.73% in home science. Out of 20 toppers, 17 are from a rural background. Rural students are performing well continuously and hope for better in the coming time,' he added.
