Jurisdictional police in the dock after CCB raids 19 pubs and bars for serious violations
Jurisdictional police personnel are in the dock following a series of raids carried out by Central Crime Branch officials on 19 pubs and bars in West and Central Divisions, which not only exposed multiple violations, but also a lack of monitoring by the jurisdictional police. Taking a strong exception to the violations, Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh on Tuesday said that a probe had been ordered into the lapses on part of the jurisdictional police and action will be taken based on the report. Based on a tip-off received by the Commissioner, 11 special police teams of CCB carried out surprise checks at pubs and bars in Upparpet, Cottonpet, Kalasipalya, Cubbon Park, and Ashoknagar police station limits. The officials found 19 establishments were violating rules and also employed women staff illegally. The bars and pubs lacked basic hygiene and had no smoking zones. These pubs and bars were also involved in gross violations of excise rules and operating beyond permissible time limits and did not comply with Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 regulations. According to a senior police official, the pubs and bars have been operating illegally for the last few months and the jurisdictional police failed to monitor and check them. 'It is the responsibility of the beat police, patrolling police, area in-charge officer along with his local intelligence network to monitor pubs and bars on a regular basis. The raids exposed lapses on their part and failure to do due diligence,' the officer said. As part of the probe, the jurisdictional police officers will be summoned for questioning and their statement recorded, following which necessary action will be taken. One of the police officers, who was part of the raid, in his report stated that by the time the police reached a particular pub in Ashoknagar, the women working in the bar had been taken out and the premises were clean with no violation. The police have recovered the CCTV camera footage to check for violations. This also hints at the pub management being tipped off about the impending raids, an officer said. Meanwhile, staff of the bars and pubs alleged that the raids carried out by the police were selective and many pubs and bars carrying out similar activities were ignored.

City police chief urges women personnel to take up criminal investigations, create outreach of safety initiatives
The new Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, on Sunday, encouraged the women personnel to join mainstream policing rather than opting for soft jobs. Mr. Singh was speaking at a meeting with women police personnel above the rank of sub-inspectors in Bengaluru. 'A majority of the women personnel prefer soft jobs rather than field work, citing gender biases and other reasons. Senior officials present at the meeting motivated us to take up crime investigation, maintaining law and order and helping women in distress,' an official who attended the meeting said. The meeting also became a platform to discuss and address challenges faced by women personnel during field duty, ranging from workplace conflicts to safety and infrastructure concerns. One of the main concerns raised by women officials was that they lack facilities like creches for their toddlers at the divisional level, rest rooms, and waiting rooms while they are on the ground. The meeting also discussed the safety of women and children and the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to be carried out during any eventualities. The personnel were urged to increase the outreach of the various women's safety initiatives taken up by the city police under the Nirbhaya Project and train women on how to avail these services.

Nigerian woman on student visa arrested in Bengaluru with Rs 10-crore worth MDMA crystals
In a major drug bust in Bengaluru, the Anti-Narcotics wing of the city's Central Crime Branch arrested a 25-year-old woman from Nigeria on June 10 with Rs 10-crore worth of MDMA crystals concealed in a women's wear consignment that she was carrying. The 25-year-old has been identified as Akinwunmi Princess Ifeoluwa who arrived in India on a student visa and was residing at Uttam Nagar in New Delhi. The woman was arrested from the Tarahunise village on the Rajanakunte Main Road of the Chikkajala police limits on a tip-off provided by informants that a foreigner was going to deliver a consignment of MDMA in Bengaluru. The police have reported finding 5.32 kg of MDMA crystals, an Apple mobile phone, and a consignment of new churidar dress pieces from the possession of the woman. 'The offender is a foreigner who landed in Delhi a few years ago,' the Bengaluru police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said. 'The information provided by informants stated that a foreigner was illegally earning money by selling prohibited drugs,' the Bengaluru police said in a statement on Friday. Ifeoluwa has stated that she came to New Delhi on October 4, 2021, on a student visa to study at the Chaitanya Deemed University in Telangana, but did not enroll at the college. Instead, she said she moved to New Delhi to work as a stylist doing hair braiding and pedicures. She claimed to have met a woman called Asa who assigned her the task of transporting the contraband to Bengaluru. 'She had hidden MDMA crystals in a consignment containing new dress piece materials that were allegedly packed by her acquaintance and transported from Delhi to Bangalore by bus,' the police said. The woman has claimed that she was delivering the drugs to a dealer in Bengaluru. The police are yet to arrest the receiver of the consignment. The Nigerian woman claimed that she started peddling drugs after interactions with Nigerian acquaintances living in Delhi. The woman has been charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985 and the Foreigners Act of 1946.
