Selangor plans asset seizure for nafkah defaulters to protect rights
SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government is considering asset seizure as a key measure against husbands who evade court-ordered nafkah (financial support) payments. State Islamic Religious Affairs and Cultural Innovation Committee chairman Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah highlighted additional proposals, including income withholding and garnishment orders, to enforce compliance. Mohammad Fahmi stressed the importance of selecting the right enforcement mechanism to avoid delays and protect the rights of recipients, particularly ex-wives and children's guardians. 'Failure to choose the right channel can cause confusion and jeopardise the rights of the maintenance recipient,' he said during the State Assembly session. The state is also exploring collaborations with agencies like the National Registration Department, Inland Revenue Board, and financial institutions to trace and seize defaulters' assets. The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS), alongside legal experts, is reviewing amendments to the Islamic Family Law Enactment (Selangor State) 2003 to strengthen enforcement. - Bernama Since 2022, the Selangor State Family Support Division has received 1,189 complaints related to maintenance violations, underscoring the urgency of stricter measures.

SHAH ALAM: Seizure of assets is among the mechanisms being considered by the Selangor government against husbands who evade and default on court-ordered 'nafkah' (financial support) maintenance. State Islamic Religious Affairs and Cultural Innovation Committee chairman Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah (pic) said other proposed measures include income withholding orders, garnishment orders, and the sale of property belonging to defaulters. "The selection of an appropriate and efficient mechanism by the party seeking maintenance, especially the ex-wife or children's guardian, is a crucial factor in ensuring the successful enforcement of maintenance orders. "Failure to choose the right channel or mechanism can cause delays, confusion, and ultimately jeopardise the rights of the maintenance recipient," he told the State Assembly on Monday (July 7). He was responding to an oral question from Mariam Abdul Rashid (PH-Meru) on efforts by the state government to strengthen state laws and enable stricter action against those who evade maintenance payments. Mohammad Fahmi said the state government, through the Syariah Judicial Department (JAKESS), is also exploring strategic collaboration opportunities with other agencies such as the National Registration Department, the Inland Revenue Board, and financial institutions to assist in the process of tracing and seizing the assets of individuals who have defaulted on maintenance orders. "The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS), together with JAKESS, the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), academics, and Syariah legal experts, are currently reviewing and proposing amendments to the Islamic Family Law Enactment (Selangor State) 2003 to improve provisions related to the enforcement of maintenance orders," he said. He also told the State Assembly that 1,189 complaints of maintenance violations had been received by the Selangor State Family Support Division since 2022 until May 31 this year. - Bernama

S'gor PH dismisses Azmin's claim that PN can take over state govt
Selangor PH secretary Khairuddin Othman says PN will face an uphill battle to take over the state, as its assemblymen have failed to effectively serve their constituencies. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Selangor Pakatan Harapan (PH) has dismissed Azmin Ali's claim that Perikatan Nasional (PN) is capable of taking over the state government at the next polls. Azmin, the Selangor PN chief, recently said the coalition could seize control of the state by winning 10 additional seats at the next state election. PN currently holds 22 out of 56 seats in the Selangor state assembly. Speaking to FMT, Selangor PH secretary Khairuddin Othman said PN would face an uphill battle to secure enough seats as its assemblymen had failed to effectively serve their constituencies. Acknowledging PN's right to aspire to govern Selangor, Khairuddin nevertheless expressed confidence that voters would be wise enough to determine which coalition genuinely prioritises their well-being. He said many of the Selangor government's current programmes had boosted public confidence in the state administration, giving PH a strong chance of retaining its position in the next state polls. 'With our strong track record in public welfare, we're confident we will reclaim PN's marginal seats in Selangor – not the other way around,' he added. In the Selangor state election in August 2023, PH, in cooperation with Barisan Nasional (BN), secured 34 seats and successfully formed the state government. Khairuddin also reminded PH-BN coalition members to avoid 'shooting themselves in the foot' by openly criticising one another, warning that such behaviour would only erode public confidence in the alliance.
