RM34.2mil federal govt injection to boost Sandakan's public infrastructure

SANDAKAN: The federal government has approved RM34.2mil to fund key infrastructure and community upgrades in Sandakan — Sabah's second-largest city, located on the state's east coast — as part of efforts to uplift living standards and drive local development. The projects, under the Housing and Local Government Ministry, were announced during Minister Nga Kor Ming's working visit to Sandakan on Thursday (July 10), where he inspected eight sites earmarked for improvement. The largest allocation — RM30mil — is for upgrading and building new landfill cells at the Labuk solid waste disposal site, with completion targeted by August 2027. 'The 3.8ha facility will be able to handle up to 200,000 metric tonnes of waste. This is crucial for Sandakan's goal of becoming a cleaner, more sustainable city,' Nga said during the visit, held under the ministry's Sentuhan Kasih outreach programme. Nga said the visit was part of the unity government's continued commitment to ensure federal resources benefit Sabahans directly. 'This is not just about infrastructure — it's about uplifting quality of life. The unity government is committed to inclusive development that reaches all corners of the country, including Sabah,' he said. Among the completed initiatives is the RM400,000 refurbishment of the Jalan Singapore community hall, which involved drainage upgrades, repainting, and structural repairs, and was completed in just two months. Nearby, repainting works are ongoing at Taman Singapore Apartments, with four blocks — 62, 72, 73 and 74 — nearing completion. A total of RM1mil has been allocated under the Malaysia Housing Maintenance Fund (TPPM), including an additional RM500,000 for expanding the repainting scope. The project is expected to be fully completed by July 28. 'This initiative focuses on improving physical infrastructure and basic amenities to ensure safer, cleaner, and more comfortable living conditions for strata residents,' Nga said. Sandakan is a coastal town located on the state's east coast, about 330km from the state capital Kota Kinabalu. With a population nearing half a million, it is known for its rich history, biodiversity, and role as one of Sabah's key urban centres. Meanwhile, the ministry has also approved RM2mil for upgrading four major markets — Pasar Elopura, Pasar Kim Fung, Pasar Umum and Pasar Sim-Sim — with new tables and facilities aimed at improving hygiene and comfort for local traders. Two more RM400,000 allocations will go towards sports facilities: a roof for the basketball court at Taman Indah Jaya, and upgrades to the futsal court at Harmoni low-cost housing. Nga and his delegation also visited PR1MA's Residensi Borneo Cove project, where 94% of the 999 units have been sold and over 700 residents have moved in. Built on a 9.53-acre site along Jalan Buli Sim Sim, the project features three residential blocks with a multipurpose hall, surau, futsal court, playground, kindergarten and nursery. 'The success of these projects is the result of strategic cooperation between KPKT, local authorities, and the Sabah state government. This strong synergy ensures effective oversight and maximum benefit to the people,' Nga said. He added that these efforts reflect the ministry's broader mission to improve community well-being and ensure that development reaches all levels of society.

RM34.2 mln for well-being of Sandakan residents

Nga SANDAKAN (July 10): Minister of Housing and Local Government, Nga Kor Ming continued the KPKT Sentuhan Kasih tour series in Sandakan today by inspecting eight major projects under his ministry's purview. This visit reaffirms the Unity Government's ongoing commitment to ensuring the welfare and well-being of the people in Sabah receive due attention. The tour began with an inspection of the upgrade works for waste cell construction at the Labuk Solid Waste Disposal Site. The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) has allocated RM30 million to the Sabah State Government for this project, covering planning, supervision, construction, testing, commissioning and maintenance. This initiative is a key effort to strengthen solid waste management in Sabah toward community well-being and environmental sustainability. The visit continued to the building upgrade and related works project at Taman Singapore, implemented through the Malaysia Housing Maintenance Fund (TPPM) under the supervision of the National Housing Department (JPN). An allocation of RM500,000 was provided to repaint four blocks of Taman Singapore Apartments. KPKT also granted an additional RM500,000 to repaint other blocks in the same apartments. This project focuses on physical repairs and basic facility maintenance to ensure safe, clean and comfortable stratified housing. It is expected to be fully completed by 28 July 2025. During the same visit, Nga also inspected a community hall on Jalan Singapore that had been refurbished at a cost of RM400,000. Next, the delegation visited Sim-Sim Market, Sim-Sim Water Village and Elopura Market. KPKT has approved RM2 million for upgrade works at four markets: Elopura Market, Kim Fung Market, Pasar Umum and Sim-Sim Market. These upgrades include improvements to vendor stalls to enhance comfort for local traders. Additionally, KPKT approved RM400,000 for constructing a basketball court roof at Taman Indah Jaya and another RM400,000 to upgrade the Futsal Court at PPR Harmoni. These initiatives aim to boost the well-being of Sabah's residents. Nga and the KPKT delegation also visited Residensi PR1MA Borneo Cove, an affordable housing project completed on 19 May 2021. Located on a 9.53-acre site, the project offers 999 apartment units across three residential blocks, complete with facilities such as a multipurpose hall, playground, surau, kindergarten, childcare center, and futsal court. Its strategic location on Jalan Buli Sim Sim makes it an ideal choice for locals. According to the minister, the successful implementation of these projects results from strategic collaboration between KPKT, local authorities and the Sabah State Government. This close synergy ensures each project is well-supervised and delivers optimal benefits to the people. He further emphasized that these efforts align with KPKT's vision to strengthen community well-being and prosperity nationwide.

KKDW Allocates RM1.11 Billion For Rural Development In Sabah This Year

PUTATAN, May 17 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) has allocated RM1.11 billion for rural development in Sabah this year, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, said the allocation covered social infrastructure projects, including the construction of rural roads, provision of electricity, and water supply systems, aimed at improving access, quality of life, and sustainability for the rural population. According to him, there is still a significant gap that must be addressed, particularly in terms of basic infrastructure, economic access, education, and rural digitalisation, therefore, KKDW remains committed to implementing comprehensive high-impact programmes, including in Sabah, to close this gap. 'There are no major electricity issues in urban areas, so rural areas must also have a good electricity supply, like in urban areas. Similarly, rural infrastructure such as roads needs to be upgraded and improved,' he said while officiating the closing ceremony of the "Sentuhan Kasih Desa MADANI Bersama Pimpinan" event here tonight. Also present were Sabah Community Development Department (Kemas) chairman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, who is also Kinabatangan MP, and Kemas director-general Datuk Mohd Hanafiah Man. Ahmad Zahid said that to uplift every rural child from an early age and ensure no one is left behind, KKDW was currently implementing three high-impact early education initiatives, now in the pilot phase. He said the Smart Classroom@KEMAS initiative introduced a high-tech kindergarten and nursery model with the integration of digital Teaching and Learning (PdP), smart infrastructure facilities, and efficient governance. He added that the PeliTa@KEMAS Programme aimed to produce a generation of young Huffaz aged seven to 12 who not only memorised 'Juz Amma', the last or 30th part of the Quran, but who also followed a systematic and phased Quranic study syllabus. Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid said the TABIKA Tunas Istimewa@KEMAS provided appropriate early education opportunities for children with special needs, particularly those with autism, so that they could also enjoy fair and comprehensive education.

Nga tells opposition MPs to 'live in run-down flats' if they're against URA

KUANTAN: Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming suggested that opposition MPs who oppose the Urban Renewal Act (URA) should live with their families in dilapidated flats to better understand the hardships faced by the urban poor. He made a pointed invitation after opposition MPs failed to turn up for a site visit to four URA project locations on April 29, despite being formally invited on two occasions. "There was even a python near one of the flats we visited. For MPs who oppose the URA, I invite you to bring your wives and children to live there—you won't have to pay rent. Experience for yourselves what urban poor households go through," he said. Nga said he had extended "special invitations" twice to the opposition but none turned up. "They initially agreed to attend, but failed to show up. They 'ponteng' (skipped) again—not just skipping Parliament, but also when the government is trying to help the people," he said during the ministry's Sentuhan Kasih programme at Kampung Cempaka today. Earlier, he handed over house keys to Rumah Mesra Rakyat recipients and mock cheques for development and planning allocations in Pahang. Taking a swipe at high-ranking critics, Nga added: "If you are against the URA—even if you're a 'Tun', 'Tan Sri' or 'Datuk Seri'—the application forms are ready. "If you're willing, I'll offer you the vacant units. Don't just stay in your bungalows. Go stay in these flats to understand what the URA is all about. Don't stop us from helping the people." Nga had on April 29 led a group of MPs to visit four urban renewal sites in Kuala Lumpur to help them better understand the URA's significance—but no opposition MPs attended. Pas is planning a rally next month to protest against the Act, which Nga said is in its final stage before being tabled in Parliament in July. Asked if he planned to arrange another visit for opposition MPs, Nga replied, "No. Why should I?" "For your information, I personally invited Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and his deputy, Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, to the ministry's Hari Raya open house, but both did not attend. "When I hold celebrations, they lodge police reports. But when we invite them, they don't show up," he said. Nga's remarks come amid continued criticism from the opposition, some of whom accuse the URA of enabling forced evictions. Earlier this year, police recorded Nga's statement over a Christmas celebration held at the ministry's premises.
