Serhou Guirassy's surprise visit fires up CHAN-bound Guinea

Guinea international star Serhou Guirassy has boosted the morale of the Syli Local squad with a passionate visit to their training base in Kindia, just days before the team departed for Morocco to continue preparations for the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024. The Borussia Dortmund striker, fresh off a spectacular season in which he scored 44 goals, made the stop as part of a broader humanitarian mission in his native country to launch his charity initiative. However, football was clearly at the heart of his agenda as he spent time encouraging the CHAN-bound squad. Guirassy, who also played a starring role for Dortmund during the recent Club World Cup in the United States, urged the locally-based players to seize the opportunity that CHAN offers and give their all to represent the nation proudly on the continental stage. 'Stay focused and give everything on the pitch,' Guirassy told the players. 'This is a huge chance to show what Guinea is made of. Fight with pride and make the nation proud.' The visit was warmly received by the Guinean Football Federation (FGF), with Mr. Mamadou Barry, FGF Vice-President, leading a delegation that welcomed Guirassy and his team. Also present were Mohamed Lamine Nabé and Hassimiou Barry, both members of the Executive Committee, who expressed their appreciation for the striker's show of solidarity. "On behalf of the Executive Committee, we thank Serhou Guirassy for this symbolic visit,' said Ibrahima Blasco Barry. 'It's a powerful gesture that means a lot to the players and the federation.' The Syli Local team, led by head coach Souleymane Camara, departed for Morocco shortly after the visit, where they will hold a six-day training camp from 13 to 19 July at the next phase of their CHAN preparations. The camp will focus on tactical refinements and cohesion before the team travels to Douala, Cameroon, for a mini-tournament. While in Cameroon, Guinea will face two fellow CHAN participants—Burkina Faso on 24 July and the Central African Republic on 28 July—in matches designed to simulate the high-pressure environment of the tournament. Both games will be played behind closed doors. Guinea have been drawn into a tough Group C featuring Algeria, Uganda, South Africa, and Niger, making every preparatory detail vital. Having reached the semi-finals in 2016 and 2020, Camara's side is aiming for a historic breakthrough at CHAN 2024, which kicks off 2 August and runs until 30 August, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Guirassy's visit is expected to leave a lasting impact on the squad, many of whom look up to the Bundesliga star as a symbol of what is possible through hard work, focus, and love for country.

(AP Photo/Pamela Smith) EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Real Madrid's Club World Cup quarterfinal against Borussia Dortmund had taken three crazy turns during nine minutes of second-half stoppage time when Marcel Sabitzer chested the ball and sent a right-footed volley toward Thibout Courtois' post. Courtois leapt to his right, extended the long arm on his 6-foot-7 frame and just managed to get his gloved fingertips on the ball, knocking it down. Advertisement Courtois hit the ground as the ball bounded up. He looked skyward, planted his right hand to regain his balance, grabbed the ball with both hands on the second bounce and fell onto it with his chest. Sabitzer turned his back to the goal and put both hands on his head as Brazilian referee Ramon Abatti walked by, raised both hands and blew the final whistle. 'In football it's like this. All the teams that are here, they compete until the end," Courtois said after Real's 3-2 victory Saturday. 'A game could become like this at any minute and that's what happened at the end.' Voted the top goalkeeper in 2018, Courtois has won a pair of Champions League titles with Real Madrid along with a two Premier League championships and four in La Liga. 'We are so lucky that we have Thibaut on goal because Thibault is one of those keepers that makes you win games and today that save has been so decisive,' Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said. Advertisement Gonzalo García and Fran García scored in the first 20 minutes as Madrid built a 2-0 lead. Dortmund's Maximilian Beier scored three minutes into stoppage time and Kylian Mbappé, who entered in the 67th, restored a two-goal lead with his bicycle kick one minute later. Serhou Guirassy converted a penalty kick in the eighth minute of added time after he was fouled by Dean Huijsen, who received a red card and will miss the semifinals. Courtois then came up with a stop for the ages. 'It is a great big save. That's the reason why he is the best goalkeeper in the world," Dortmund coach Niko Kovač said. Advertisement Madrid advanced to a semifinal match against Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, a day after Chelsea meets Brazilian club Fluminense. "The nervousness, we need to learn to be more calm in the next game and finish the game in possession,' Courtois said. ___ Associated Press Writer Nuria Diaz Munoz contributed to this report. ___ AP soccer:

Reactions: 'We fought to see the game through, with commitment and passion'

Niko Kovac (at the press conference): 'That was our best half at this tournament. I was very satisfied with the first period. We were sharp, we defended on the front foot and we put the opposition under stress. In addition to the two goals, we created two more huge opportunities for Serhou (editor's note: Guirassy) from which we could have scored another one or perhaps even two. Then we would have taken in a very comfortable lead at half-time. What was then important in the second-half was that we fought to see the game through, with commitment and with passion. The opposition had possession of the ball but no great chances. We had a few problems with balls in behind the defence. But okay. The main thing is that we won. We're now in the last eight, and that's more than we could've imagined. For us and for German football, it is a big thing that there are two clubs in the quarter-finals. Real Madrid are a great team with many good individual players. We're seeing the football from them that Xavi played in Leverkusen: very vertical and very quick. We're looking forward to the clash but we know we're outsiders. But in football, you have to play 90 minutes first. And if we put in the performance we did today, especially in the first period, we think we have a chance.' Serhou Guirassy (to DAZN): 'I think we had a very good first half. The second was slightly more difficult but we were mentally strong and won. We're therefore all happy this evening. I think I could have scored at least three goals. But I'm satisfied. The most important thing is winning the match. I'm expecting a very tough game against Real Madrid. We're prepared.' Inline Image Gregor Kobel (to BVB TV): 'It was a very good game from us in the first period. In the second half, it's sometimes normal for there to be a change of momentum because the opposition have nothing left to lose. We conceded a goal early on but then kept going brilliantly until the end. We didn't give much away – perhaps occasionally but I was then on hand. But I think that overall, it was a good performance from us. Now we have an amazing game against an outstanding opponent, who will definitely demand a lot from us. We'll have to hold our own, step on the gas and fight – and then we'll see.' Inline Image Niklas Süle (to BVB TV): 'The stadium, the pitch, the time and everything that went along with it was more the kind of thing that we're used to. It was not as boiling hot as in the first three matches. I think that for the most part, we played our best game of the tournament. We were well prepared. In the second half, we no longer applied pressure on the ball and didn't get out so well at the back. We had a bit of luck in one or two situations at that point. But we held our own well. Not everything is easy in a tournament. It is a great achievement to reach the last eight, especially when you also consider which teams have already been eliminated.' Transcribed by Boris Rupert
