2 arrested with fake currency notes at Sandeshkhali guest house

Kolkata, Jul 19 (PTI) Two persons were arrested on Saturday with fake currency notes of nearly Rs 10 crore in face value from a guest house in Sandeshkhali in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, police said. Acting on a tip-off that two persons checked into the guest house with big bags on Friday afternoon, a team of the Basirhat police district raided the place and made arrests, they said. 'The fake currency notes were seized from room 206 of the guest house. There were a few genuine currency notes among the fake ones," an officer said. Police said they have information about the presence of fake currency notes at several places in Sandeshkhali, and efforts were underway to locate them. Former TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his supporters used to spend a lot of time at this guest house, the officer said. The owner of the guest house is also close to the notorious leader, he said. FIR Against Ex-TMC Leader Sheikh Shahjahan In 2019 Sandeshkhali Case As CBI Takes Over Probe

Last Updated: The case, which was initially investigated by the West Bengal Police, has now been handed over to the CBI after an order from the Calcutta High Court. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed an FIR against ex-Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shahjahan in connection with a 2019 post-poll violence case in Sandeshkhali. The FIR also includes the names of 24 others along with Sheikh. The case pertains to the killing of three BJP workers—Pradeep Mondal, Devdas Mondal, and Sukanta Mondal—during post-election violence in 2019. Pradeep Mondal, Devdas Mondal, and Sukanta Mondal were found dead after an alleged attack on their village in Sandeshkhali, allegedly by a mob led by Sheikh. West Bengal Police was initially investigating the case, but later the family of victims approached the Calcutta High Court seeking a CBI probe. Justice Joy Sengupta has ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to constitute a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the case with 'utmost seriousness". The court said the investigation should be supervised by a joint director. 'In the present case too, which has even more serious charges, I find that the police failed to take action against the prime accused at different stages, leading to a gross miscarriage of justice. It would, thus, not be in the interest of justice to again give the reins of investigation to them," Justice Sengupta noted while handing over the probe to the CBI. Sheikh Shahjahan is currently in judicial custody in connection with other Sandeshkhali-related cases. The police had arrested Sheikh on January 5, 2024, in a case of alleged attack on Enforcement Directorate officers during a raid at his Sandeshkhali home. view comments First Published: July 07, 2025, 09:41 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Calcutta HC orders CBI probe into 3 BJP workers' murder in Sandeshkhali

Six years after three Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers were allegedly killed and their bodies mutilated in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas, the Calcutta High Court on Monday ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. Justice Joy Sengupta directed that the CBI's Joint Director lead the investigation, with progress monitored by the trial court. In June 2019, BJP workers Pradeep Mondal, Devdas Mondal and Sukanta Mondal were found dead. Their families, Supriya Mondal and Padma Mondal, filed two FIRs, and the state CID initially handled the case. Sheikh Shahjahan, a prime accused, was later dropped from both charge sheets, according to the victims' relatives. On January 8 last year, backed by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, the families returned to the High Court, seeking a CBI probe. Shahjahan has been in judicial custody since his arrest on January 5, 2024, following an alleged assault on ED officers during a raid at his Sandeshkhali home. His bail plea is pending before the High Court. Locals, especially women, have long protested Shahjahan's influence, accusing him and his associates of land grabs, forced fish pond construction on occupied fields and harassment of residents. Opposition parties, including the BJP, staged demonstrations in response to these allegations. In June 2019, three BJP-affiliated workers were found murdered in Sandeshkhali (North 24 Parganas) amid violent street clashes between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP. Investigators initially linked the killings to local TMC strongman Sheikh Shahjahan, but the state CID later removed his name from the chargesheet. The families alleged police inaction on a 2019 FIR that named Shahjahan. They even sought court protection and a CBI probe. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari said the victims' relatives feared reprisals and were placed in a police safe house for protection.

Tripura Cong urges rights panel to protect its minority leader

Agartala: The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee sought protection from the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) for its leader, Md Shahjahan Islam, who is on the run to evade arrest following controversy over his alleged derogatory remarks against the chief minister earlier this week. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Congress president Asish Kumar Saha said a party delegation met chairman THRC, Justice Arindam Lodh, on Thursday and alleged serious human rights violations against Shahjahan's family and other minority families living in the Shantipara area of the city. Congress urged the commission to ensure the safety and security of the residents. They complained that instead of apprehending the main accused, East Agartala Police arrested Shahjahan's elderly father and brother, who were unaware of the controversial episode, and were sent to judicial custody until June 23. Saha alleged that some BJP workers were hatching a conspiracy to evict Shahjahan and other minority families. He added that local leaders had also issued an ultimatum to the entire minority community in the area to leave Shantipara as soon as possible if they wanted to save their lives. Tripura Police on Monday arrested the father and brother of Shahjahan Islam for his comments against CM Manik Saha, the state govt, and other BJP leaders in connection with the alleged obstruction of the celebration of Eid-al-Adha on June 7. Shahjahan, in a Facebook live, protested an incident that occurred on the day of the Eid celebration, where some miscreants pulled the beard of a 70-year-old man for celebrating Eid in Amarpur under Tripura's Gomati district. Congress leaders, however, alleged that a group of miscreants backed by BJP attacked the residence of Shahjahan Islam at Shantipara with firearms and assaulted his parents and wife, and vandalised the house. BJP's state minority morcha president and former minister Billal Mia filed a complaint against Md Sahajan Islam at West Agartala police station for his statement against the chief minister on social media.
