Don't be fooled: Empangeni police issue scam alert

Empangeni police have issued a warning after several reports of residents falling victim to a money drop scam operating in the CBD. According to King Cetshwayo Cluster police spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase, a scammer will drop fake printed stacks of money in front of a targeted victim. When the intended victim picks it up, a perpetrator lures them into a corner to split the money among themselves as they both 'found' it. 'When you agree to their request, the rest of the team working with the perpetrator would follow, and a broad daylight robbery would ensue. 'They strip you of all your valuables at gun- or knifepoint to the extent that they ask the victims to make EFTs while the other members are collecting the money,' warned Shangase. King Cetshwayo District outlines comprehensive bulk water plan

WATER woes will soon be a thing of the past in King Cetshwayo District Municipality (KCDM). This is according to KCDM spokesperson Thami Shangase, who says the municipality is implementing various strategic infrastructure projects. ALSO READ: Youth urged to rise to the call These include the construction of regional bulk infrastructure, refurbishment and upgrading of rudimentary water schemes, drilling and equipping of boreholes, especially in underserved areas, and replacement of old and inefficient generators to improve system reliability. He explained that these interventions are part of the municipality's broader strategy to provide reliable water services to all residents.'These efforts will significantly reduce and ultimately eliminate the need for water tanker services,' said Shangase. Various water projects under way 1. Nkandla Vutshini Bulk Water upgrade In Nkandla, Shangase says a permanent solution to water shortages is being delivered through the R99-million Nkandla Vutshini Bulk Water Upgrade Project, which is set to benefit wards 8, 10, 11, 12 and 13, impacting more than 3 890 households. 'The project is nearing completion, and we look forward to the water commissioning set for the end of July. The tankers previously serving parts of these Nkandla wards will be redirected to other areas still awaiting permanent access to clean, running water,' he said. 2. Phobane Water Purification Plant upgrade In uMlalazi Municipality, construction of a 10Ml clear water reservoir has been completed as part of the upgrade of the Phobane Water Purification Plant to 50Ml/day. KwaHlokohloko Bulk Water Supply upgrade He added that the Phobane Water initiative runs concurrently with the KwaHlokohloko Bulk Water Supply Upgrade from Thintumkhaba to Mpehlele, which was split into four major contracts with a combined project value of about R213-million. This upgraded pipeline will be served by the bigger Phobane Reservoir. 4. eShowe SSA1 Bulk Water Supply Project upgrade This upgrade, costing about R92-million, is currently under construction and set to improve supply to eShowe town and surrounding suburbs in wards 9, 10, 7,13, 14, 16 and 17 of uMlalazi. 5. Shangase says progress is going well and it is now 38% complete. 'All these projects are expected to be commissioned by December, delivering clean, running water to all aforementioned wards of uMlalazi,' he said. 6. Greater Mthonjaneni SSA2 Bulk Water SupplyMUnder Mthonjaneni, this R96.2-million project is under way, consisting of of 2.5Ml and 2Ml reservoirs and pipelines. 7. Mthonjaneni SSA 2 Phase 1B2 This R40.3-million project consists of construction of pipelines, a 500kl reservoir and pump station. 8. Zimela Pump Station SSA2 Phase 1B2 'The R8.4-million [project] is now completed and commissioned. ‘Inspired' Proteas Women look to follow the lead of World Test champions in West Indies decider

Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Proteas Women all-rounder Nondumiso Shangase said the team were inspired by the men's victory in the World Test Championship final, and looked to follow suit in their ODI series decider against the West Indies on Tuesday. With the trophyless curse now behind South African cricket, the women's team will look to stamp their authority on the game as well, by defeating West Indies in the final ODI on Tuesday afternoon. So far, the series is tied 1-1, with the Proteas Women coming off a 40-run victory on Saturday. According to one of Saturday's stand-out-performers, Shangase, the team did not celebrate the win much because their sights were set on Tuesday's showdown at the Three Ws Oval in Barbados. 'We need to celebrate that victory. It was a good one, but then at the same time, we know what's at stake here and we're ready for Tuesday,' Shangase said. The 29-year-old knocked a long overdue half-century, carding 55 off 48 balls with four fours and two sixes. Video Player is loading. There were also more consistent scores throughout the middle and lower order in the second ODI than there was in the first, indicating a more healthy run-rate throughout their innings. The Proteas Women have shown their class with the bat, and the players agree on that as well. It's the bowling that needs some work if they want to defeat the Windies middle-order and stamp their authority on the series. The team are finding it difficult to take wickets in the middle of the innings. The start and tail-end is where they are most successful with the ball. But something's got to give if they want to put their foot on the West Indians' throat, because in reality, utter dominance is what separates the good teams from the great ones. And only the great teams win trophies. The performances with bat and ball during the final two games of the tri-series against India and Sri-Lanka last month showed that the Proteas have the ability to muster up the grit and fight. Besides Nonkululeko Mlaba's spell of 4/33 in 10 overs and Marizanne Kapp's 2/42 in six overs, the ladies struggled during the middle of the innings to put pressure on the West Indian batting order.

Proteas women beat West Indies by 40 runs to level series

The Proteas Women came back in the ODI series against the West Indies and leveled the series after winning game two by 40 runs at the 3w's Oval in Barbados on Saturday night. Stand-out performances by Nondumiso Shangase, Suné Luus, and Nonkululeko Mlaba ensured the Proteas sealed the victory and gave them a shot at winning the series. The Proteas went in to bat first, again, but this time, put up a much more composed knock with a couple of half centuries to push their total to 309/9. Shangase knocked a career best 55 off 48 balls, smashing four boundaries and two sixes in the mix. Luus was the pick of the South African batting contingent, scoring 76 runs off 55 deliveries. The Proteas opening pair Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits put the team in a somewhat comfortable spot during the first powerplay. Brits and Wolvaardt put up 51 runs in the opening 15 overs before Hayley Matthews removed the South African skipper for 28 runs. Momentum swung in the home team's favour after Brits was dismissed for 26 runs in the 19th over but Shangase and Luus decided to step up and take control of the match. A pivotal 85-run partnership put the game back in the South African corner. Veteran all-rounder Mazrianne Kapp, who returned to the team for the ODI series, scored 33 runs and put up a 49-run partnership with Luus.
