Cowboys Third-Round Pick Named Possible Surprise in 2025

Cowboys Third-Round Pick Named Possible Surprise in 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Cowboys were able to both pick for depth and fill a hole at No. 76with East Carolina cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. Advertisement Revel fell to the third round due to an ACL injury sustained in September; otherwise, the consensus is that he would have been a first-round pick. The 6-3, 193-pounder posted three interceptions in two years as a starter in college and added 12 pass deflections in 2023. USA Today's Bucs Wire predicted each team's biggest surprise from this year's draft, and picked Revel for the Dallas Cowboys. "The team was ecstatic to see Revel fall to the second round in April's draft, but didn't pull the trigger. Somehow, he made it to the third round," K.D. Drummond with Cowboys Wire wrote. "With Dallas clearly looking to end their investment in Trevon Diggs, Revel will be given every possible chance to prove he's a capable boundary corner once he's given the green light following his ACL recovery, that might delay his debut until October. Advertisement "Once he makes it to the field, though, fans shouldn't be surprised if he's one of the better rookie DBs in the game." Dallas lost Jourdan Lewis in free agency and Trevon Diggs has his own injury questions after suffering an ACL injury for the second season in a row. DaRon Bland is entering the final year of his contract also making his future in Dallas uncertain. Across three seasons at East Carolina, Revel posted 70 combined tackles with 37 solo and five for loss. He added a sack, three interceptions, including a pick-6, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 13, 2025, where it first appeared.

Cowboys CB Rehab Poses Major Roster Decision

Cowboys CB Rehab Poses Major Roster Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As training camp is officially one month away, the Dallas Cowboys are tasked with collecting a 90-man roster to take the trip to Oxnard. Advertisement While in Southern California, head coach Brian Schottenheimer and his new staff will conduct intense workouts, go over the schemes installed at minicamp, and - perhaps most importantly - check up on the players recovering from injury. Most eyes will be on the rehabbing cornerbacks, All-Pro Trevon Diggs and promising rookie Shavon Revel Jr. Both of their official return dates are still up in the air, but based on initial timelines, Revel is expected to be healthy a touch before Diggs, which still leaves the Cowboys in a tough spot in trying to make a decision on how to fill out the rest of the roster. When it comes time to cut the 90 down to 53 ahead of the regular season, a cornerback is likely to get the boot to make way for the returners off the injured list, especially Diggs since he's expected to not be ready by Week 1. Advertisement A release could come before we even make it to training camp. Who that might that be? Clutch Points believes former second-round pick Andrew Booth is the most in danger of getting cut. The load-up this offseason in the secondary - largely due to the injury-plagued depth, but maybe because of Booth's underwhelming play - places him in an uncomfortable scenario. "Booth also got caught in the draft crunch. The Cowboys picked Shavon Revel in Round 3," the article read. "It's true Revel is trying to come back from an injury, but his abilities when healthy put him in front of Booth [on the depth chart]. Advertisement "The Cowboys also added three undrafted free agents at the cornerback position. There are plenty of signs they weren't satisfied with the play of Booth in 2024. But the injury status of Revel and Trevon Diggs could give Booth a second chance to show what he's got." In order to keep his job, Booth will have to exceed expectations in his increased reps while Diggs and Revel remain sidelined. Booth got a chance last season when Diggs went down for good late in the year. He subbed in for seven total games, starting in two, and registered 15 tackles and one pass defensed. The most alarming numbers were the amount of completions against him. Booth allowed a staggering 80 percent completion on passes in his direction, giving up 12 catches on 15 targets. He allowed 193 receiving yards and two touchdowns in man coverage. Advertisement Dallas could be the second team to move on from the Clemson product. Booth spent his first two years with the Minnesota Vikings before being traded straight up for Nahshon Wright last offseason. With someone destined to hit the chopping block and other formidable options left in free agency, Booth may be playing with everything left to lose this summer. Cowboys ‘Worst Signing Imaginable' Adds to 90-Man Roster

Cowboys 'Worst Signing Imaginable' Adds to 90-Man Roster originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - This week, sources confirmed to us that cornerback Robert Rochell has agreed to terms with the Dallas Cowboys on a free-agent contract. Advertisement This is by definition a 'camp body' move as he joins the Cowboys after the team suffered a litany of injuries at the position last season. This year, they may continue to face difficulties in that regard. Trevon Diggs is rehabbing another knee surgery with a hopeful return aimed at mid-season. Third-round pick Shavon Revel Jr. is recovering from an ACL tear, but he should be back on the field during training camp. Dallas has enough faith here that it didn't chase Jaire Alexander (who signed with the Ravens) and that it hasn't bid on Miami trade bait Jalen Ramsey. Maybe that's a mistake … though our pals at The Landry Hat might be being a bit harsh when they label this move 'the worst signing imaginable.' Advertisement That hyperbolic view is of course driven by fans' desire for Dallas to make big-name moves. But some moves are big. And some moves fill the bottom of 90-man rosters. Rochell, by the way, may have his best shot at making the Cowboys roster as a special teams ace. The former fourth-round pick in 2021 has seen limited action on defense throughout his four-year career. He started with the Los Angeles Rams where he saw five cornerback starts as a rookie but totaled just 14 tackles on the season. The next three years he has seen action strictly on special teams. Last year in particular, he played just one snap on defense for the Packers. He appeared in 41 percent of Green Bay's special-teams snaps in 2024. Advertisement Rochell will have to make a major impact in that area to make the team, we bet. Is this the Cowboys' best move? Of course not. Is it their worst move? Nah. It's just a move. Rookie minicamp observations: Why Cowboys are so excited about their Day 2 draft picks

FRISCO, Texas — Regardless of how you feel about the Dallas Cowboys using another first-round pick on an offensive lineman, it's difficult for anyone to argue with what they did on Day 2 of this year's NFL Draft. Earlier this week, The Athletic 's Mike Sando wrote a review of the draft classes of the 16 NFC teams with thoughts from NFL team executives. 'They got the best guard in the draft, and they get a pass rusher opposite Micah Parsons who can actually win with speed,' an exec said about the Cowboys' draft. 'Their pass rush is going to be a pain in the ass to deal with. The corner they got in the third might have gone in the back end of the first round if he'd never gotten hurt.' The pass rusher that executive was speaking about is second-round pick Donovan Ezeiruaku. The corner is third-round pick Shavon Revel Jr. Both have a chance to make an impact as early as Week 1. Both were in attendance for Dallas' rookie minicamp at The Star over the weekend. Cowboys second round pick DE Donovan Ezeiruaku — Jon Machota (@jonmachota) May 3, 2025 Rookie minicamp practices don't offer much in terms of evaluating performance on the field. The players were not in pads and they did not conduct team drills. The portion of Saturday's practice open to reporters was stretching and then some individual work. What was noticeable about Ezeiruaku was his size. He's listed on the roster at 6-2, 248 pounds. All of Dallas' other edge rushers are at least 6-3. Being a little shorter than the other top edge rushers in this year's draft class might have caused him to fall to the second round. These are the heights and weights of the four edge rushers drafted in the first round: Abdul Carter (third overall) 6-4, 250; Mykel Williams (11th) 6-5, 267; Shemar Stewart (17th) 6-5, 267; James Pearce Jr. (26th) 6-5, 245. Ezeiruaku's production at Boston College was never a question as he recorded 16 1/2 sacks, 20 1/2 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles in 12 games last season. He uses his long arms (34 inches) and athleticism to get by offensive linemen. 'He's very explosive bending around the corner,' Cowboys vice president of player personnel Will McClay said. 'He's got length to be able to engage with tackles, but his array of moves and his determination, leadership and who he is, we're going to maximize that. He wants to be the best of the best and he's going to do that, and he's going to bring others with him. He's got skill plus that drive.' The edge rusher group is a deep one in Dallas. Along with Parsons, there is Dante Fowler, Sam Williams, Marshawn Kneeland and now Ezeiruaku. There will be packages to get more than two on the field at the same time, but it's also a good area to have depth considering how injuries significantly limited Dallas' 2024 pass rush. Parsons, Williams, Kneeland and DeMarcus Lawrence combined to miss 40 games because of injury last season. 'I'm coming here to work and do whatever the coaches ask me to do,' Ezeiruaku said. 'If they ask me to stand up or play over the top of the guard on some type of passing situation, or stand up and be on the edge, I'll do that to the best of my ability.' Height was also noticeable with Revel, but for the opposite reason. He looked every bit of 6-2 as he worked off to the side on the resistance cords. To compare to other Cowboys starting cornerbacks, Trevon Diggs is 6-2 and DaRon Bland is 6-0. Revel, who is working back from a torn ACL and partial meniscus tear in his left knee during practice at East Carolina in September, was moving well and did not appear to be limited on Saturday. At the moment, the plan is to have him remain a limited participant through the start of training camp where he will likely begin on the physically unable to perform list. But there is confidence that he will come off the PUP list during camp and be ready for the start of the season. 'Right now I can pretty much do everything,' Revel said. 'I'm running straight line. Cutting, haven't got too much into that. Just trying to take it day by day, trying to take it slow.' Cowboys third round pick CB Shavon Revel Jr. — Jon Machota (@jonmachota) May 3, 2025 A healthy starting trio of Bland, Diggs and Revel looks good on paper. However, Diggs is also working his way back from a significant knee injury that could cause him to miss the start of the season. If he's not ready for Week 1, Dallas could be looking at a starting trio of Bland, Revel and either Kaiir Elam or Caelen Carson. The Cowboys could also make a move to add another veteran cornerback. Either way, there's a good chance that Revel ends up being an immediate starter at one of the outside corner positions. 'He was the top guy on our board,' Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said of picking Revel in the third round. 'He obviously had the injury issue. We knew that's probably why he was still available, because he might not be ready to go Day 1 of minicamp, Day 1 of training camp. You get a guy like that sitting there with his production and it was obvious that was the right thing to do.' Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was caught on camera doing a little dance in the team's draft room right after the Revel pick. Part of it was because they got a player they considered in the second round. Another reason for celebration was the combination of what they did with their top three picks, Tyler Booker, Ezeiruaku and Revel. 'The thing that I saw was a relative picking players that really fit,' Jones said. 'I'm not going to say it was need, but really fit to the leadership and to the ethos of what we would like to be able to claim that was (Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer's) first (draft) class. And I'm telling you, those three picks that we made right there, their makeup, to have that in Schottenheimer's first class will set a tone in terms of what's to go and it happens, it's there. … These are guys that are really the type of people that you want on the team and lead. These guys have that Michael Irvin stuff relative to leadership. And these guys are working to make everybody better. That was a common thread among those three picks.' Unpacking Future Packers: No. 14, East Carolina CB Shavon Revel Jr

Unpacking Future Packers: No. 14, East Carolina CB Shavon Revel Jr The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects who the Green Bay Packers could select in the 2025 NFL draft. The Green Bay Packers are doing a mini remodel of the cornerback room at 1265 Lombardi Avenue this offseason. They lost Eric Stokes, Corey Ballentine and Robert Rochell to free agency, and Jaire Alexander's days inside that room could be numbered. Brian Gutekunst signed Nate Hobbs to a four-year deal. The former Las Vegas Raider can play in the slot or on the boundary and gives Jeff Hafley another versatile piece in the secondary. The makeover of that room will continue during the 2025 NFL Draft, where Gutekunst will likely use a pair of picks on the position. A potential target early in the draft is Shavon Revel Jr. The East Carolina cornerback checks in at No. 14 in the Unpacking Future Packers Countdown. Revel started his collegiate career at the JUCO level before transferring to East Carolina in 2022, where he missed the beginning of the season due to a hand injury he suffered during offseason workouts. Revel enjoyed a breakout season in 2023, recording 54 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one interception and 13 pass deflections. This past season, Revel played in three games before suffering a torn ACL. In those three games, he recorded two interceptions and two pass deflections. Standing at 6-1 with nearly 33-inch arms and an impressive track background, Revel has a unique combination of size and speed. He stands out on the gridiron. Due to that combination, Revel was No. 35 on Bruce Feldman's Annual Freaks list. From Feldman: "A former high school track standout, Revel ran a 6.90 55-meter dash time, but really got on the Pirates' wish list after he ran a 4.40 40 and broad-jumped 11 feet during a summer camp. At 6-3, 190 pounds, Revel has ideal size for an NFL corner." With his speed, Revel is able to stay attached to wide receivers on a vertical plane. He reaches his top gear quickly. He has easy change of direction skills and composed footwork to mirror receivers in coverage. He's able to stay hip-to-hip with wide receivers. If he gets beat, he has the elite recovery speed and doesn't panic when the ball is in the air. "Revel's recovery speed and his speed breaking on the football is among the best in the class," Devin Jackson, an NFL Draft writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer said. "He's a loose, sudden athlete that often undercuts routes and beats wide receivers to the tops of their routes." Revel is opportunistic in coverage. The JUCO transfer is always looking to make a game-changing play. He does wide receiver-like things at the catch point and has outstanding body control. He's a long, athletic cornerback who did a great job of using his length to disrupt wide receivers at the catch point and at the top of their routes. "Revel never panics in coverage, even in trail technique, and it's impressive to watch him close the gap between he and the receiver downfield," Jackson said. "He's also willing to take chances in coverage, which allowed him to nab two interceptions while only playing in three games." The East Carolina cornerback doesn't back down against the run. He does a good job of coming to balance and getting his man to the ground. With his impressive wingspan, he has a wide tackle radius. According to Pro Football Focus, Revel missed four tackles during his time with the Pirates. "He's physical as a run defender despite his slender frame," Jackson said. "He doesn't mind sticking in his nose in as run defender." Revel will also bring special teams value to the team that drafts him. He blocked two kicks during the 2023 campaign and logged 137 snaps during his first two seasons at East Carolina and recorded two tackles. Fit with the Packers Before suffering a season-ending injury, Revel was on the fast track to be a Top 15 pick. In three games, he recorded two interceptions and he would have put on a show at the NFL Scouting Combine. With his size and the speed he would have been able to showcase, teams would have been tripping over themselves to get their hands on the East Carolina cornerback. Given that he's coming off a torn ACL and that he'll be 24 on draft night, the Packers may stray away from Revel in the first round. If he somehow slides to them in the second round, the Packers would be getting tremendous value. "The best is ahead of Revel, who showcased excellent change of direction ability and closing speed to make plays on the football," Jackson said. "He's got the skill set, length, instincts, and ball skills to be a high upside cover corner that can play both man and zone coverages. Assuming he's healthy coming off his injury, Revel has a chance to make an early impact at the NFL level." Revel checks all the boxes with his frame, athleticism and playmaking ability. He'd bring some much-needed length to Green Bay's cornerback room. If he's on the board when the Packers are on the clock in the second round, it would be a slam dunk pick for Gutekunst and the Packers.
