Even after a decade, Ambedkar Bhavan construction in limbo

Mysuru: More than a decade after its foundation was laid, the construction of Ambedkar Bhavan on Dewan's Road in Mysuru remains incomplete. "We are setting a 15-day deadline for the govt to resume the work and complete the project," Prabhudha Bharatha Bheem Sene president Siddaraju said on Monday. If work does not resume within 15 days, the organisation will launch an indefinite protest in front of Ambedkar Bhavan, he told reporters. Siddaraju called the delay a grave insult to Dr BR Ambedkar. Despite Mysuru being home to prominent political leaders like chief minister Siddaramaiah and district social welfare minister HC Mahadevappa—both vocal proponents of Dr Ambedkar's ideals—the continued inaction is unacceptable, he said. The Bhavan's construction began in 2012 with an estimated cost of Rs 4.6 crore. Over the years, that figure ballooned to Rs 20.6 crore, with 60% of the work reportedly completed. The remaining tasks, which include parking facilities and interior development, are estimated to require an additional Rs 23 crore. Though the govt has approved Rs 23.8 crore, which was also confirmed by Mahadevappa for the second phase, no tangible progress was made. "If there are obstacles in executing the remaining work, the authorities must come forward and explain. But if they continue to remain silent and inactive, we will have no choice but to protest indefinitely," warned Siddaraju.

Association plea to implement 4% PwD quota in promotion

Bhubaneswar: Members of the Odisha Disabled Govt Employees' Welfare Association on Sunday expressed concern over the non-implementation of the statutory 4% reservation in promotions for employees with benchmark disabilities. During a state-level meeting of the association, the members unanimously resolved to submit a memorandum to chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on the issue. "Despite the binding directive issued by Orissa high court on Jan 30 last year directing the state govt to implement the 4% reservation within three months, the order remains unimplemented. This delay not only violates the court's directive but also disregards the department of personnel and training office memorandum issued on May 17, 2022, as well as the Supreme Court's judgment in Siddaraju vs state of Karnataka, both of which affirm the right to reservation in promotion for persons with benchmark disabilities," said Hemant Kumar Subudhi, president of the association. "The demand is rooted in the statutory provisions of subclause (1) of Section 34 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. We want implementation and compliance with the legal provision," he added. He said their pleas have not been heard even after repeated representations. "As a result, eligible employees with disabilities across various departments continue to be denied their rightful opportunities for career progression," he added. An official of the social security and empowerment of persons with disabilities department said the demand is under active consideration of the govt.

Man, cattle electrocuted in Nanjangud taluk

Mysuru: In a tragic incident in Eechagalli village of Nanjangud taluk, a man and two cows were electrocuted after coming into contact with a snapped power line. The deceased has been identified as Siddaraju (52), a resident of the village. The two cows, reportedly of the Ilati breed and worth approximately Rs 1.5 lakh, also died on the spot. The incident has left Siddaraju's family devastated. According to locals, the mishap occurred when Siddaraju was grazing his cattle in the field. One of the cows is believed to have come into contact with a broken live wire. In an attempt to rescue the animal, Siddaraju too was electrocuted. The tragedy came to light later in the evening when Siddaraju failed to return home. His family went to the field to look for him and found both the man and the animals lying lifeless, with a severed electric wire nearby. The incident happened during light evening rain, which may have worsened the situation. Following the incident, officials from the Nanjangud Rural Police Station and Karnataka Electricity Board (KEB) visited the spot and conducted an inspection. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway. In a related development, the Mysuru district administration has declared a one-day holiday for all Anganwadi centres on May 26 as a precautionary measure due to strong winds and rain. The order, issued by the Deputy Commissioner, cites child safety as the primary concern.
