'The trailer for Ryan Gosling's Project Hail Mary is so good I need the film now'

2025 is the year of the trailer. All too often teasers for movies have given far too much away, if not the entire plot, and now it feels like Hollywood is finally reclaiming the art of the trailer. At least, it does with Project Hail Mary. The first trailer for the sci-fi film landed on Monday, 30 June, revealing Ryan Gosling as a man sent to space alone in a bid to save humanity from extinction, his character Ryland Grace is out of his depth and feels woefully unqualified for the mission as a middle school teacher — though he does have a doctorate in molecular biology. The preview comes almost nine months ahead of the film's release, and it has got me so excited for the film itself I already can't wait to see it. Project Hail Mary's trailer felt like a breath of fresh air compared to previous teasers, giving just enough away to be get me (and audiences) excited and ready to spend my hard-earned cash on tickets. What is it about the trailer that is so great? Well for one Gosling is always charming and he already seems to be having a ball in this teaser for Project Hail Mary. His utterance of the phrase "I put the not in astronaut" is just sublime, give him his Oscar nomination now please and thank you. The promise of a fun sci-fi epic is also an enticing one, especially when the writing is already as strong as it appears in the trailer. This can definitely be linked back to the source material from Andy Weir, the creative mind behind another excellent sci-fi novel The Martian. There are some that have complained that trailer has given just slightly too much away by revealing a glimpse of an interaction between Ryland and alien life, but it also feels like it fits with the comedic, fish out of water feel of the movie. It's not just the visuals that are a spectacle in the trailer, it's also the strength of the music choice — in Project Hail Mary's case the use of Harry Styles song Sign of the Times. It's something that was done well in another excellent trailer, the one made for 28 Years Later. The preview for Danny Boyle's return to the 28 Days Later franchise was a real masterstroke, showing some of the best bits without actually revealing the context. Slicing terrifying action sequences together to the tune of Rudyard Kipling's poem Boots, a poem with a tempo so repetitive it unsettles the listener. It perfectly encapsulated the sense of dread needed for the British horror film and has been described as one of the best trailers made in recent years for good reason. In this digital age it's always hard to break through, and so for a trailer to make a mark like Project Hail Mary has is a real feat. And I for one can't wait to see the film, but I may also read the book ahead of its release because I'm so excited I already want to know what happens to Ryland in space. Project Hail Mary is coming to UK cinemas on 20 March, 2026.

Ryan Gosling reluctantly goes to space in ‘Project Hail Mary' trailer

Ryan Gosling puts the 'not' in 'Astronaut' in the new trailer for 'Project Hail Mary.' The upcoming sci-fi film, based on Andy Weir's novel of the same name, stars Gosling as middle school teacher turned reluctant astronaut Ryland Grace, who's tasked with saving humanity from the effects of a dimming sun. However, when he wakes up from a coma as the sole survivor aboard a spaceship, he must overcome his amnesia to remember where he is and why he was sent there. 'It's an insanely ambitious story that's massive in scope and it seemed really hard to make, and that's kind of our bag,' Gosling said of 'Project Hail Mary' at CinemaCon in April, where he debuted footage from the film, according to Variety. 'This is why we go to the movies. And I'm not just saying it because I'm in it. I'm also saying it because I'm a producer on the film.' The trailer, released Monday by Amazon MGM Studios, opens with Gosling startling awake on the spacecraft, his hair and beard uncharacteristically long. 'I'm several light-years from my apartment,' he proclaims, 'and I'm not an astronaut.' It then jolts back in time to show Grace pre-launch as he learns from Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller) that if he does not journey into space, everything on Earth will go extinct. According to Stratt, who heads the mission, Grace is the only scientist who might understand what is happening to the sun and surrounding stars. The trailer, which progresses through an intense montage set to Harry Styles' 'Sign of the Times,' teases Gosling's signature humor. 'I can't even moonwalk!' the 'Barbie' actor declares at one point. (Gosling portrayed moonwalker Neil Armstrong in another recent space movie, Damien Chazelle's 'First Man.') Everything leads up to Grace meeting an alien, who isn't shown in full — but fans of the book know it plays an integral role in saving planet Earth and beyond. The film, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, marks the second book-to-movie adaptation for Weir, whose novel 'The Martian' became an Oscar-nominated 2015 blockbuster starring Matt Damon. An adaptation for his book 'Artemis' is also in development with the same directing team. 'Project Hail Mary' hits theaters March 20.

New trailer for 'Project Hail Mary' gives first look at Ryan Gosling in space

A first look at 'Project Hail Mary,' the upcoming science fiction thriller starring Ryan Gosling, captures how a middle school teacher is suddenly tasked with saving the world — from space. Based on Andy Weir's 2021 novel of the same name, 'Project Hail Mary' centers around Ryland Grace's mission to space after a mysterious astronomical phenomenon threatens the existence of humanity. In a trailer for the film, which premiered exclusively on "TODAY" June 30, Gosling is pictured with long hair and a beard, shouting, 'I just woke up from a coma.' 'And I'm not an astronaut,' he repeats several times — until the next scene shows him echoing the same sentiment well before his fateful mission. The trailer explains that the sun is dying, and Ryland, a former scientist turned middle school teacher, might be the government's only hope in understanding why. The mission is called Project Hail Mary, given Ryland's 'long shot' at surviving it. With his background in molecular biology, Ryland is dubbed the Earth's only hope. The thrilling trailer, featuring Harry Styles' 'Sign of the Times,' sees Ryland struggle to survive in space light-years away from Earth. And as he works to communicate his findings to his team, he may encounter a few aliens along the way. 'Project Hail Mary' will also feature Sandra Hüller, known for 2023's 'The Zone of Interest' and 'Anatomy of a Fall.' The screenplay was written by Drew Goddard, while the film was directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The movie will be released in theaters and in IMAX on March 20, 2026. Weir also wrote 'The Martian,' which was adapted into a 2015 film, starring Matt Damon.

The Project Hail Mary trailer has dropped. It's perfect

Fans will have to wait until March 20, 2026 to see the final product, but the first trailer for Project Hail Mary dropped on Monday on the TODAY show. Based on the book written by Andy Weir -- who also authored The Martian -- Project Hail Mary is a story of survival, humanity and friendship as middle school science teacher Ryland Grace goes on an adventure he never could have expected. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Into the Spider-Verse) are at the helm as directors for the project. Ryan Gosling stars as Grace, who opens the trailer waking up from a coma and finding himself in outer space. Over the course of the trailer, we find out that Grace has to go on a mission in an attempt to find out why the sun (and all the stars in the solar system) are dying. Check out the full trailer here: It's just shy of three minutes of perfection, utilizing Harry Styles' song "Sign of the Times" as Eva (played by Anatomy of a Fall's Sandra Hüller) tries to convince Grace he's the only man for the job. The trailer also breaks down Project Hail Mary's relatively complicated plot well, explaining that if they can't complete this mission, the entire world will die. Oh, and we get our first glimpse of Rocky, the alien Grace meets on his journey. All-in-all, lovers of the book should be excited based on what we've seen so far. "I'm several light years from my apartment," Gosling says to open the clip. "And I'm not an astronaut." March 2026 can't get here fast enough.

Asking Eric: My husband smells

Dear Eric: I've been married for a few decades to someone who lacks self-awareness about the impact of his choice not to shower for several days, sometimes more than a week. He doesn't even shower after he works out/runs. He also wears the same underwear for days at a time. When I tell him he smells he says he can't smell anything. Believe me, he smells. He seems not to care or believe what I tell him about good hygiene practices. Maybe if he hears your opinion on the matter of good hygiene for men it might crack open a willingness to change. – Keeping the Windows Open Dear Windows: If he doesn't heed your comments about his body odor, as someone who loves him and lives with him, I doubt he cares what I think. But here's the facts: personal hygiene is personal, but one's personal hygiene practices impact those around them. This is true of people who don't bathe and also people who are fastidious about bathing and douse themselves in cologne, and everyone else in between. We don't live in bubbles (metaphorically, or in your husband's case, perhaps literally). Beyond the odor issue, is there a communication problem here? Because if you're telling him about an aspect of your shared life that's causing you problems (and, frankly, a health concern), and he's dismissing it, what else is he dismissing? Are there other concerns of yours that he doesn't take seriously? I'm not trying to problematize your marriage. I hope this is the only issue you two have. However, when a spouse brings up an issue, it's always best for the couple to work together to find a solution. There's got to be a way for both of you to be happy and happily share a space. Dear Eric: The letter from 'Burning Questions, Not Hillsides', who was trying to keep a friend from smoking in their backyard, reminded me of a little decorative plaque I made and used to display in my home years ago. I was a young adult and mother in the 1970s and 1980s when smoking was still common. I do not recall if I created this little verse or if I read it somewhere. (My apologies to the author if I inadvertently plagiarized.) It read: 'Welcome to our non-smoking home. If you are seen smoking, we will assume that you are on fire and treat you accordingly.' I probably still have it packed away somewhere but thankfully would not need to display it in 2025. – Sign of the Times Dear Sign: I love a cheeky sign that also helpfully lets friends know how to be good guests. Dear Eric: I have a distant relationship with my brother as I am a gay man with a 'new thought' religion, both of which he says will send me to Hell. We communicate, mostly by email on birthdays and Christmas, but did get along well more than 10 years ago when our father passed and the estate was settled. I sent my nieces gifts on their birthdays and Christmas until they turned 18 and stopped thanking me. I've seen one niece in person in the last 20 years. Two of the nieces send Christmas wishes at times. I was invited to the wedding of a grandniece I've never met, probably at the urging of my sister-in-law, who would like to see my brother and I closer. My husband was not included in the invitation. I declined the invitation, stating we had booked a cruise at the time of the wedding. I will send a card. Of course, I lied about the cruise. Should I have attended as a way to get back into the family? They are my only living family save three cousins, two of which are fundamental Christians. I feel much closer to my husband's family who are welcoming and available. How do I handle another invitation? – Estranged Guest Dear Guest: Wedding invites are sometimes olive branches, but at other times they're simply social gestures that can take on outsized influence. While the invitation you received was kind, accepting it or future invites that feel more obligatory rather than genuine, may not serve you as well as reaching out to your family in a way that is safe for you. Let's talk about this practically: would you really have enjoyed this wedding, knowing few people and feeling that your husband had been excluded? I suspect you wouldn't have, which would have made it hard to have reconnecting conversations with your brother. Weddings are also not ideal times for those kinds of conversations. A card is the right move here. But if you want to be closer to your family, first figure out what your boundaries are (ideally in conversation with your husband), and then reach out.
