TRIC Awards updates as major soap stars battle out for top trophy
The TRIC Awards have kicked off in London, with a string of famous faces descending on the glitzy event. This year's do is being held at the swanky Grosvenor House, London, with radio and telly stars all hoping to walk away with the prestigious awards. Going up against one another this year are the likes of Emmerdale, Coronation Street, EastEnders and Casualty. Meanwhile, radio stars such as. Simon Mayo, Ally McCoist, Vernon Kay and Jordan North are facing one another. Each year, the awards honour TV shows, presenters and broadcasters in their respective categories, with all votes being made by the British public. While the winners are yet to be decided, we're bringing you live updates. TRIC Awards present Dan Walker, who is hosting this year, and the event is being attended by close to 1,000 guests. Magic Radio host Lemar is also performing, setting the tone for the night. With several major categories this year, the entertainment industry will be celebrated in style. Live Aid to Be Re-Broadcast for 40th Anniversary on U.K. Radio
One of the most iconic concerts in music history is getting a second airing. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Live Aid, Greatest Hits Radio will re-broadcast the legendary 1985 benefit concert in a 10-hour special airing July 13, 2025. Hosted by British radio veteran Simon Mayo, the special, titled Live Aid Relived, will feature original performances by Queen, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, The Who, and more. The special will close with the final episode of Live Aid: 40 Years On, a documentary series featuring interviews with Bob Geldof, Midge Ure, Queen's Roger Taylor and Brian May, and promoter Harvey Goldsmith. 'I was there as a paying customer 40 years ago and I can't wait to relive that extraordinary day,' Mayo said in a statement. 'Apart from finding a place to park in Wembley, of course.' Queen's iconic 21-minute set, widely regarded as one of the greatest live performances of all time, will air in full, alongside Bowie's emotional 'Heroes' dedication to children around the world. Originally broadcast to 1.9 billion people across 150 countries, Live Aid was a global benefit event staged at London's Wembley Stadium and Philadelphia's JFK Stadium to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. The concert raised over £114 million but has also since faced criticism regarding perceptions of African nations and aid distribution. Bob Geldof, co-founder of the Band Aid Charitable Trust and the man behind the original concert, said the re-broadcast serves as a reminder of music's enduring power. 'Thank you Greatest Hits Radio for hopefully letting people know that they are not powerless in the face of human monstrosity,' Geldof said. 'What better time than now to know and understand the power of music and what it can achieve.' Live Aid Relived airs July 13 via Greatest Hits Radio. 'My three-year-old son brought me back from the brink'
A father who said his three-year-old son saved him from the brink has opened up about his mental health struggles and urged others in a similar position to reach out for years ago, Simon Mayo from Barnsley said he had turned to alcohol after feeling overwhelmed by financial problems and personal 49-year-old said he hit rock bottom when he found himself standing next to a railway line one night, feeling like there was "no way out".However, he said when he glanced back towards his car and saw the empty child seat he thought "I can't leave my son", and instead decided to seek support. If you have been affected by any of these issues, you can visit the BBC's Action Line or contact the Samaritans "I sat in the back of my car and put my hand on [my son's] car seat and sat there and just absolutely cried my eyes out," he said."That following Monday, I went to Andy's Man Club straight from work."The charity, which was set up in 2016 and now has more than 270 groups around the country, was started in memory of Andy Roberts, who took his own life aged peer-to-peer support group describes itself as a safe space where men can talk about their emotions without being judged."I didn't get a 'what are you doing here?', it was 'hi mate, are you alright?'," Mr Mayo he replied that he was not, he was invited to sit down and share his story, marking the start of his regular attendance every said his mental health improved drastically and he eventually decided to become a lead facilitator for the charity to help others looking for support."I'm just proud of where I've come from and where I am," he said. "[My son] is amazing, I worship the ground he walks on. It gets me up every morning." 'It's OK to talk' Mr Mayo shared his story as part of Mental Health Awareness Week and a new campaign which has been launched in collaboration with alcohol harm reduction charity Drinkaware and Andy's Man by Drinkaware has revealed that 58% of middle-aged men report using alcohol as a coping mechanism and one in five said they struggled to open up without the help of Tyrell, Drinkaware's CEO, said: "It is OK to talk, it is OK to talk about your drinking or some other things that might be feeling quite stressful or difficult in your life."Going along and asking for some help and support like Simon did sounds really hard, but once you've made that first step you can see from his story that actually things can start to feel a lot better."Listen to highlights from South Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, catch up with the latest episode of Look North.
