'Supergirl': Everything you need to know about the DCU's upcoming movie
The revamped DC Universe (DCU) is off to a soaring start, with James Gunn's "Superman" surpassing $400 million at the box office. It also folded an important new hero into the mix, 'House of the Dragon' and 'Sirens' star Milly Alcock as Supergirl, who is set to get her own standalone movie next year. And the origin story for the Man of Steel's hot-headed cousin looks to be just as chaotic as her cameo. This reboot promises to introduce a bolder, edgier tone to the new DC Universe—so here's everything you need to know about "Supergirl." Look Out. 2026. 16, 2025 "Supergirl" is scheduled to launch in theaters worldwide on June 26, 2025. That means Supergirl will officially soar into the DCU nearly a year after James Gunn's "Superman" hit theaters. While he's not directing the film, Gunn confirmed that principal photography for the project wrapped in May, so post-production should be in full swing by this point. So while delays aren't impossible, there's every reason to believe Supergirl's first standalone venture in the DCU will hit its scheduled release date. The "Supergirl" movie is based 2021's 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,' an eight-issue comic book miniseries written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely. Initially, the movie retained the comic's "Woman of Tomorrow" subtitle before Gunn confirmed in June it was shortened to simply "Supergirl." Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. This epic, space-faring adventure leans more toward the cosmic vibe of Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" than the character-driven storytelling we saw in "Superman." That tonal difference should help set it apart from the Man of Steel's first outing in the revamped DCU. The movie doesn't have an official synopsis yet, but in the comics, the story centers on a jaded Kara Zor-El (aka Supergirl) who finds herself at a crossroads. Struggling with a sense of purposelessness, she feels adrift now that her younger cousin, Kal-El (Superman), can fight his own battles and no longer needs her protection. Just as she's on the verge of walking away from it all, a young alien warrior named Ruthye Marye Knoll pulls her into a revenge quest. As she sets out to track down Krem, who killed Ruthye's father and destroyed her home, it soon becomes a race to save Krypto's life after he's critically injured in a fight. "We will see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, raised on a rock, a chip off of Krypton, and who watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life and then come to Earth," Gunn said in a 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "She is much more hardcore and not the Supergirl we're used to." So far, only a few actors have been confirmed for "Supergirl." As we said before, Milly Alcock is starring as the titular superhero Kara Zor-El. The movie will feature "3 Body Problem" star Eve Ridley as Ruthye, Matthias Schoenaerts as the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hills, and Jason Momoa in a small role as DC anti-hero Lobo. Lobo, who doesn't appear in the "Woman of Tomorrow" comic, possesses superstrength and rapid healing abilities in the same vein as Wolverine and roams the galaxy as a ruthless bounty hunter with deadly marksmanship. David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham are also on board as Kara's parents, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed in January. "Supergirl" will be directed by Craig Gillespie with a screenplay by Ana Nogueira of "The Vampire Diaries" and "Hamilton" fame.

Netflix profits soar with ads and higher subscription prices
SAN FRANCISCO: Netflix has posted a stronger-than-expected second-quarter performance, with profits rising 45% year-over-year. The streaming giant attributed this growth to higher subscription prices and a rapidly expanding advertising business. Revenue climbed 16% to $11.1 billion for the quarter ending June 30, surpassing both analyst expectations and the company's own projections. Net profit surged to $3.1 billion, prompting Netflix to raise its full-year revenue forecast to between $44.8 billion and $45.2 billion. Content remained a key driver, with major hits like the third season of 'Squid Game' drawing 122 million views. The company called it 'our sixth biggest season of any series in our history.' Other successful titles included 'Ginny & Georgia' (53 million views) and 'Sirens' (56 million views). The animated film 'KPop Demon Hunters' also performed well, reaching 80 million views and topping global music charts with its soundtrack. Netflix highlighted the continued popularity of Korean content, reinforcing its global strategy. Looking ahead, the company is optimistic about upcoming releases, including the second season of 'Wednesday,' the final season of 'Stranger Things,' and new films from acclaimed directors like Kathryn Bigelow and Guillermo del Toro. The platform is also expanding into live programming, with plans for marquee boxing matches and NFL games. This diversification aligns with Netflix's push beyond traditional on-demand entertainment. Investors have responded positively, with shares rising over 40% year-to-date. The company's crackdown on password sharing and introduction of ad-supported tiers have boosted profitability. While Netflix no longer discloses subscriber numbers, it continues to focus on engagement metrics. Advertising remains a key growth area, with Netflix expecting to double ad revenue in 2025. The company forecasts $9 billion in ad-based revenue by 2030. 'With another robust earnings showing in Q2, Netflix continues a winning streak going back several quarters and cements its place as the leader among streaming services,' said Emarketer analyst Paul Verna. - AFP

James Gunn offers a glimpse at 'Supergirl' in a snarky new poster for the upcoming movie
Anyone who saw James Gunn's 'Superman' — and judging by the box-office results, that's a lot of people — has already seen 'House of the Dragon' and 'Sirens' star Milly Alcock as Supergirl, who makes a brief appearance at the end of the movie to give her cousin Superman a hard time and to reunite with super-dog Krypto. Now Gunn has revealed on X another look at Alcock's Supergirl in the first poster for the upcoming 'Supergirl' movie from director Craig Gillespie, which opens in theaters June 26, 2026. Projecting the same kind of chaotic energy she captured in her brief onscreen appearance, Supergirl stands in front of what looks like a wall with a banner of the shared Superman/Supergirl logo, the slogan 'Look up' graffitied over to instead read 'Look out.' She's wearing a trench coat and sipping a slushie-style beverage, and in general looking a lot cooler than her endearingly dorky cousin, even without her entire face visible in the picture. That fits with the tone of the DC comic book series that serves as the source material for 'Supergirl,' 2021's 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,' written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely. I read 'Woman of Tomorrow' before the movie was announced and was immediately surprised that Gunn would pick such an unconventional story to reintroduce the character to movie audiences. It's an epic space-faring saga that's closer to Gunn's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' movies than the grounded human storytelling of 'Superman,' and it should go a long way toward distinguishing the character from her more famous male counterpart. King, who's also a writer and producer on DC Studios' upcoming HBO Max series 'Lanterns,' presents a Supergirl who is weary of her superheroic activities and embarks on an intergalactic bender, only to be drawn into a mission of revenge for a young alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll, while also attempting to heal a critically injured Krypto. The movie will feature Eve Ridley as Ruthye, with Matthias Schoenaerts as the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hills and Jason Momoa in a small role as DC anti-hero Lobo. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. After the strong start for Gunn's new DCU with 'Superman,' a lot is riding on 'Supergirl' to keep up the momentum. It's hard to say much from a poster, but given the self-conscious edginess of the source material and the in-your-face style of the image, it seems likely that 'Supergirl' will take a very different approach. They will always be pretenders to the throne... ;) The poster recalls the teaser for 'Shazam,' which also featured the character in a cool, casual pose, aiming to exude youthful energy. Veteran comic book writer Fabian Nicieza also pointed out in a post on Bluesky the similarities to the marketing for his 1990s Marvel Comics series 'New Warriors.' There's a long history of comic book companies trying to make their characters stylish and cool, and we'll have to see if it works out this time.

Netflix earnings surged last quarter. Thank ‘Squid Game,' price hikes and advertising
Thanks to popular shows like 'Squid Game,' plus price hikes and growing advertising revenues, Netflix on Thursday reported strong growth in the second quarter, beating analysts' expectations. The Los Gatos-based streamer's revenue rose 16% to $11.1 billion, while the company's net income increased 46% to $3.1 billion compared to a year earlier. Analysts polled by FactSet had expected about $11 billion in revenue and $3 billion in profit. Wall Street analysts have long deemed Netflix the winner of the streaming wars. The company no longer gives quarterly updates on how many customers it has, last revealing it had more than 301 million subscribers in 2024. But there's still pressure on Netflix to continue to show financial growth, as the company aims to attract more advertising dollars and subscribers around the world. Many analysts believe that Netflix's future sales boost will come from its advertising business, which began in November 2022. The streamer is expected to generate $2.07 billion in ad revenue this year in the United States, which is estimated to climb to nearly $3 billion in 2027, according to research firm Emarketer. 'They're seeing some substantial revenue and they are also getting a lot of people to sign up or switch to the ad supported tier,' said Paul Verna, a principal analyst at Emarketer. Netflix said it expects total revenue in to grow 17% in the third quarter. The company increased its full-year 2025 revenue forecast, estimating that it will generate $44.8 billion to $45.2 billion. That's up from the range of $43.5 billion to $44.5 billion that it previously projected. In May, Netflix said its cheaper plan with ads reaches more than 94 million monthly active users, indicating that its version with commercials is gaining traction as other services follow a similar strategy. 'We continue to make progress building our ads business and still expect to roughly double ads revenue in 2025,' Netflix said in its letter to shareholders. Earlier this year Netflix raised prices on most of its subscription plans in the U.S. Its cheapest plan with ads went up $1 to $7.99 a month. Netflix said the response to its recent price adjustments has been 'broadly in line with our expectations.' Netflix continues to face competition from other streaming services globally and entertainment companies like YouTube and TikTok that also take up significant amount of watch time among consumers. During the second quarter, Netflix released popular programs including Korean animated film 'KPop Demon Hunters,' drama 'Sirens' and the third season of 'Squid Game.' 'Squid Game's' third season, which premiered late last month, was the most watched series in 93 countries during its debut week and broke a record for the most views for a show in its first three days on Netflix, a boon for a streaming service that thrives on capturing the attention of audiences worldwide by releasing must-watch programs. 'These are positive initiatives and they're the quality of the content that shows the uniqueness of it,' said Melissa Otto, head of research at S&P Global Visible Alpha, on shows like 'Squid Game' Season 3. 'These are all things that pull the users in and make them want to subscribe to Netflix or watch Netflix content.' Netflix also has received critical acclaim for its programs, noting it has received 120 Primetime Emmy nominations for shows including the limited series drama 'Adolescence' and comedy-drama series 'Nobody Wants This.' Netflix stock closed at $1,274.17 on Thursday, up about 2%.

Marking the occasion, cast members took to social media to celebrate. Benjamin Hollingsworth shared a joint post with Kandyse McClure, which included selfies of the two alongside fellow co-star Zibby Allen. 'First day of Summer and Last day of Filming Season 7 of Virgin River. ☀️ @netflix,' he wrote. Meanwhile, Allen shared some additional photos alongside stars Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson. 'VRS7 wrapped. These lives within these lives… 💚,' she captioned the pics. 'I hit the scene partner jackpot,' Hollingsworth wrote in a comment underneath the post. Annette O'Toole took to Instagram for a simple post featuring her pup in a travel carrier, writing, 'Bye Vancouver!' Colin Lawrence posted a video tribute to the season, saying, 'And that, my friends, is a wrap on Season 7 for John 'Preacher' Middleton. Oh gosh, what can I tell you? Another stellar season, in my humble opinion. This show has been the most fun to work on. I've been so blessed to have been a part of this for the last seven seasons. Fingers crossed more to come,' and adding that there are 'more laughs, more tears, just a lot of emotion' in the forthcoming installment. While there is no official release date for Season 7, its preceding season bowed on the streamer in December 2024, and the one before that premiered September 2023. As such, it's possible that Season 7 could come to Netflix late this year. As Deadline reported earlier in March, Season 7 features new recurring characters played by Sara Canning (The Vampire Diaries) and Cody Kearsley (Riverdale). The former's storyline is based on an existent plotline from Robyn Carr's expansive, eponymous novel series, with Canning playing an ex-cop who was shot in the line of duty and is now working for the state medical board as an investigator. She comes to Virgin River to investigate Doc's (Tim Matheson) practice but runs into a friend with whom she wouldn't mind catching up. Speaking to Deadline last December, series showrunner Patrick Sean Smith confirmed the fight for Virgin River's clinic will be a major storyline this year, following the investigation into Doc's actions while saving a patient, which led to a bait-and-switch ploy for the clinic to be taken over by a large hospital network.
