'Kareena Kapoor was unavailable while shooting the war in 'Asoka', people producing the film asked me why do I want to make the film where...,' says Santosh Sivan as he opens up on the Shah Rukh Khan starrer
Shah Rukh Khan 's 'Asoka' was not a box office success, however over the years, the film is remembered for its iconic music and unique content. It was cinematographer Santosh Sivan 's directorial debut. While the film got its share of flak, in a recent interview, Sivan has opened up on the troubles during the making of the film. He also added that people producing it, told him why is he making such a film where nobody is winning the war. He said on a Youtube channel, 'When I was gearing up to make Asoka, I was asked by the people producing it, 'Why do you want to make a film where no one wins the war? If I am watching a war film between the Germans and the English, I would want the English to win. Someone has to be winning.' You can't make a film where no one wins, it's a draw, or there's no outcome.' He went on to say that many discouraged him from making the film, citing its lack of conventional commercial appeal. But Sivan saw something deeper in the narrative. 'I thought that the story was very interesting. I also wanted to take Asoka and split him into someone who's very romantic, especially when there's a monsoon and it's misty,' he said, painting a picture of the Emperor as both a warrior and a man of emotion. 'Kareena was not available when we were shooting the war. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo So, I had to shoot most of it in Film City. All those things happened. You have to adjust and, of course, try to work it out,' Sivan shared. In the film, Shah Rukh Khan took on the titular role of Asoka, the third ruler of the Mauryan dynasty—portrayed as a fierce warrior transformed by the horrors of war into a proponent of peace and Buddhism. Kareena Kapoor played Karuvaki, the enigmatic second queen consort of the emperor. The cast also featured a strong ensemble including Danny Denzongpa, Rahul Dev, Hrishitaa Bhatt, Gerson Da Cunha, Subhashini Ali, and Umesh Mehra. Tamil superstar Ajith Kumar made a brief but notable appearance. While the film may not have reached the monumental status some expected, its artistry—guided by Sivan's own lens—left an indelible mark. With editing by A. Sreekar Prasad, music by Anu Malik, and a haunting background score from Sandeep Chowta, Asoka remains a visual and emotional artifact from early 2000s Bollywood—bold, imperfect, and unforgettable.

Dressers Sold by Wayfair and Amazon Are Being Recalled—See If Yours is Among Them
Product recalls can be alarming, but try not to panic every time you see one pop up. They're usually a company being cautious—and that's a good thing. And then other times it's because a product has proven to be not as safe in practice as it was in conception. It's definitely smart to stay informed (especially if it's something you use daily), but many recalls are low-risk. Check the details, see if it affects you and, if it does, follow the steps to return, replace or destroy it. Case in point: If you own a Sivan Six-Drawer Double Dresser, there's a recall you should know about. These dressers can tip over if they're not anchored to the wall, posing a serious risk to kids. They don't meet the safety standards set by the STURDY Act, both in stability and to the recall, this particular six-drawer double dresser measures approximately 31 inches tall, 47 inches wide and 16 inches deep with a model number of Y-C51. If you have one, stop using it unless it's anchored and contact the company for a refund. The recall was issued on May 22, 2025, and affects about 170 units. Anji Guyou Furniture, the brand behind the Sivan dressers, as well as Wayfair (where it was sold), are reaching out to all known purchasers directly. Customers must email a photo showing disposal of the product to guyouproductrecall@ in order to get their refund. In addition to this model, there's yet another dresser recall happening. The Rolanstar 6-Drawer Dresser, sold on Amazon, is being recalled due to similar safety concerns as the above-mentioned Sivan. The dresser can tip over if it's not anchored to the wall, creating a serious risk of injury or even death to children. About 1,293 units are affected; if you own one, stop using it unless it's secured and reach out for a refund. You can call Areson toll-free at 888-864-7995 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. PT Monday through Friday or email them at Support@ There's also the option to go to or and click "Recall" at the top of the page for more more specifics on the Rolanstar dresser, they measure about 15 x 16 x 33-inches and were sold in the color black. Call to relax traffic regulations during Plantation Crops Show in the Nilgiris
The Neelakurinji Integrated Farmer Producer Company (NIFCO) has written to the Nilgiris district collector to ease traffic restrictions along the Udhagamandalam-Coonoor-Mettupalayam Road during the district's first-ever Plantation Crops Show, to be held at the Kattery Park near Coonoor from May 30 to June 1. The founder of NIFCO, Hubbathalai N. Sivan, in his letter to the Collector and the Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops noted that the show was 'a good opportunity for the small plantation farmers and big estates to showcase their products – tea, coffee, spices etc., at the stalls of the show, which will provide a large market place and exposure of the products to domestic as well as international tourists and business communities.' However, he stated that small farmers were worried about attendance to the event due to existing traffic regulations, which made the Mettupalayam-Coonoor-Udhagamandalam road a 'one-way' for vehicles ascending the hills during the weekends. The existing arrangements routed traffic descending from Udhagamandalam via Kotagiri Road. 'Since the show falls on the weekend days, many tourists will miss to see the event due to the existing traffic regulations. Hence, it will be a great honour if the highway is open both ways (for ascending and descending vehicles) for the visit of the tourists to the show during the above three days of the event,' said Mr. Sivan.

Anti-Terrorism Day - Santosh Sivan reflects on 'The Terrorist': "The film wasn't inspired by Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, but I was there when...."
On Anti-Terrorism Day , when we focus on the world of cinema to examine significant films that reshape our understanding of violence and human nature, one notable name that comes is 'The Terrorist.' Directed by the skilled Santosh Sivan . Renowned for his exceptional talents in both cinematography and filmmaking, Sivan's 1998 film delves into the mind of a suicide bomber, providing a poignant investigation into the reasons behind such drastic actions. In an exclusive conversation with us, Sivan shares his experiences in bringing the film to life, including casting decisions, the filming process, and more. Here are the excerpts from the conversation: Was Tabu your first choice for the movie? 'Actually, I told Tabu about the script when I was shooting Iruvar for Mani Ratnam. But later on, I thought that she was looking too imposing to do a role like that because she is also built very big and all that, though I love her as an actress.' That's when Ayesha Dharker came in? 'Then we did some screen tests and then got hold of Ayesha Dharker, who was very committed, and her father (the late journalist Anil Dharker), of course, also told her, I think he warmed her up to the fact that it was a very interesting role and all that.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Extraspacious 3 and 4 BHKs from 6.76 Cr* in Mahalaxmi 7 Mahalaxmi Book Now Undo Was it tough shooting such a volatile film? 'It was actually a very simple film, we shot only for some sixteen days, continuously. And most of the people who were working in the film were students. One of them who was assisting me was Vishnu Vardhan, who is now a director. And then I think we just went with the flow.' Was the film inspired by Rajiv Gandhi's assassination? 'Not inspired. I was there when Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated. The suicide bomber and Rajiv Gandhi's assassination happened, and there was a lot of trauma following that. I and my doctor friend were stuck in place. So, I was asking him and I was thinking, how can anyone do something like this? And then I thought, what would make someone think twice suddenly, before actually doing it (acting as a human bomb)? First, I thought, if she sees a mother there, then maybe she won't do it. Then I thought, why mother, why not? She realises she is pregnant. Then how will she do it? So, that is how the story started.' Were you worried about the political backlash? 'No, I was not worried about backlash and all that. I just treated it like a story that I would see, I would like to see, that's all. And of course, we didn't have any big budget, which made things much simpler and more organic and more real. We shot it in real rain and everything. And so, when I went to Sundance, it was also picked out as the visually most exciting film at that time.'
