Mayor Bass: ‘No Kings' has been ‘successful, peaceful day' despite dispersal issues

Following a long day of 'No Kings' protests across the country Saturday, including 15 separate demonstrations in Los Angeles alone, the city's mayor is hopeful that, despite some trouble getting crowds to disperse, the day will be remembered as a peaceful one. 'Sometimes people who aren't even a part of the main protest hang around, and then that's where you can have trouble,' L.A. Mayor Karen Bass told KTLA's Kareen Wynter shortly after the 8 p.m. curfew. 'I think that is happening off and on right now, but I do think at the end of the day, this will have been a successful, peaceful day.' The mayor said she spent about an hour traveling by helicopter over each location. 'Every single one was peaceful … The Downtown one, which was a massive protest, was still overwhelmingly peaceful. I think ofenttimes when you have a crowd this large, at the end, it becomes a little more difficult.' The Mayor was likely referring to the need for officers to deploy flashbangs and teargas at one point when the LAPD reported that some protesters were 'becoming increasingly unruly' and that people were throwing rocks, bricks, bottles, and other objects. Sky5 was over the Downtown area around 8:30 p.m., where a crowd of protesters could still be seen waving flags on a street corner well past curfew. The group appeared to be peaceful and was not blocking traffic; however, it was unclear how long law enforcement would allow them to remain in the area. 'I mean, we give them time to disperse, and if it's clear that they are trying to leave, then there's a level of patience. But if they are not, then it's an unlawful assembly,' Bass said. The mayor is concerned about the possibility of violence should law enforcement be unable to get the demonstrators to go home in a timely manner, but was hopeful that would not be the case. 'I have not heard about break-ins or massive graffiti like we saw in the last few days, and so hopefully we will be able to disperse the crowd,' Bass said. 'Now it is only 40 minutes into the curfew, so I would expect for it to take a little time, but those people who want to peacefully leave will be allowed to leave, and those people that don't want to peacefully leave, they will be subject to arrest.' Officers deploy tear gas, rubber bullets to clear protesters in downtown L.A.

(KTLA) — A day of peaceful protests in downtown Los Angeles took a turn late Saturday afternoon when law enforcement began ordering the thousands of demonstrators to disperse from the area surrounding the L.A. Federal Building complex. Officers deployed flashbangs and tear gas, and KTLA's Sky5 chopper captured the moment officers on foot and horseback moved into the large crowd. The L.A. Police Department said that some protesters were 'becoming increasingly unruly' and that people were throwing rocks, bricks, bottles, and other objects. The dispersal order covered Alameda Street between Aliso and Temple, and Los Angeles Street between Aliso and Temple. Additionally, the LAPD stated that all on- and off-ramps of the 101 Freeway would remain closed between Alameda Street and the 110 Freeway. Saturday's nationwide 'No Kings' protests in Los Angeles and hundreds of locations across the U.S. coincided with Flag Day, the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army, and President Donald Trump's 79th birthday. Despite the LAPD's claims of protesters throwing objects, 'No Kings' protesters were advised by the 'No Kings' organization to remain non-violent and respectful on Saturday. Several cities across the U.S. had protests that unfolded smoothly throughout the day. 'No Kings' aim for the day was for it to be a 'nationwide day of defiance' of the Trump administration's policies on immigration, in addition to a protest of Pres. Trump's Washington, D.C. parade, which some argue is more about stroking Trump's ego on his birthday than celebrating the U.S. military. Tens of thousands of demonstrators in the Los Angeles area took to the streets early Saturday and into the evening after weeks of action in the city's streets, as protestors have been assembling to express disapproval of the mass ICE raids that have hit the Los Angeles and Southern California area specifically hard.

Sinkhole off Southern California construction site swallowing adjacent property

An industrial property adjacent to a construction site in Ventura has been red-tagged as several vehicles and structures have slid into a massive sinkhole. According to an Instagram post from Ventura Forward, construction at the site, reportedly in the area of Thompson Boulevard and East Front Street, began a week ago. 'A water well was discovered during construction and the digging didn't stop,' the post read. 'Massive amounts of water have been pumped off location since construction started.' In photos of the sinkhole, estimated to be around 25 feet, at least two pickup trucks are caught on top of the cracked and cratering asphalt on the other side of a fence housing the construction site. Video footage of the sinkhole posted just a few hours later shows both trucks deeper in the hole with several other vehicles and a nearby structure likely threatened by the cratering earth. In aerial footage captured by Sky5 Thursday afternoon, a third vehicle covered with a tarp was seen hanging precariously over the edge as the hole appeared to widen, putting a storage unit at risk and warping the construction site's fence. As of 6 p.m., there were no reports of any injuries, nor were there any signs of first responders or construction workers attempting to mitigate the sinkhole's progression. The property has been red-tagged, meaning it is unsafe and uninhabitable. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Northbound traffic will be diverted at Olive Avenue and southbound traffic will be diverted at Burbank Boulevard. Sky5 footage showed traffic was backed up for miles. Drivers headed to the area should seek an alternate route at this time. Both police units and fire department crews have surrounded the area. It's unclear how long the SigAlert will last. Jennifer Aniston's alleged stalker, gate crasher facing felony charges

The 48-year-old man from Mississippi arrested for crashing through a gate at Jennifer Aniston's Bel Air home faces the possibility of three years in prison if convicted on all charges, authorities announced Wednesday. In a news release, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said Jimmy Wayne Carwyle is charged with stalking the Emmy and Golden Globe award winning actress since March 2023. Prosecutors said Carwyle, a resident of New Albany, Mississippi, repeatedly harassed Aniston, identified only as 'Jennifer A' in the release, leaving her unwanted voicemails, as well sending her messages over social media and email. Carwyle's alleged fixation culminated in a frightening ordeal on May 5 when he reportedly crashed through the front gates of Aniston's Bel Air mansion, causing damage to the property. The 'Friends' and 'Morning Show' actress was reportedly home when the incident happened. (Sky5) Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to the neighborhood around 12:20 p.m. on reports that a burglary suspect had driven through the gate of a home near Sunset Boulevard and Bellagio Road. Private security in the area detained the suspect until officers arrived. Carwyle, who reportedly complained about being in pain after crashing through the gate, was taken into custody without further incident. He has since been charged with one count each of felony stalking and felony vandalism, as well as an aggravating circumstance of the threat of great bodily harm, L.A. County prosecutors said. 'Stalking is a crime that can quickly escalate from harassment to dangerous, violent actions, threatening the safety of victims and our communities,' L.A. DA Nathan Hochman said. 'My office is committed to aggressively prosecuting those who stalk and terrorize others, ensuring they are held accountable.' Prosecutors intend to ask the court that Carwyle's bail be set at $150,000. He is due to appear in court tomorrow. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
