Statkraft has put India assets on the block. But suitors have turned selective

Mumbai: The list of suitors for the renewable energy assets of Norwegian state-owned firm Statkraft has narrowed to five, who are now evaluating the solar assets of the company at an equity value of ₹ 3,000 crore. While the multi-national renewable energy major owns hydropower assets as well in India, the solar business is likely to be sold first, said four people with the knowledge of development said. The buyers include domestic power companies as well as private equity firms including JSW Group, Serentica, Sembcorp, Blackstone, and Macquarie. The prospective buyers are working with the company to carve out different deals depending on their interest as the entire portfolio of solar and hydropower assets is too large for one buyer, these people said. 'While strategics such as JSW Group and Sembcorp are mainly interested in the solar assets of the company, firms such as Blackstone and Serentica would be looking at the hydro assets as well," one of the persons cited above said. 'It's a large portfolio so there is scope of different structures. It depends on how they can get maximum value," a second person said. PE firms such as Macquarie are likely to initially only evaluate acquiring the solar assets of Statkraft AS in India, the second person cited above said. Statkraft India has a total renewable portfolio of around 1 GW, including solar and hydro power. These include a 76-MW operational solar power plant in Tamil Nadu, and another 75 MW of solar capacity being developed at the same location. A 445-MW solar power project in Rajasthan is nearing completion. Its hydropower assets include a 49% stake in two operating hydropower assets in Himachal Pradesh at Allain Duhangan (192 MW) and Malana (86 MW). Another hydropower plant of 150 MW capacity is under construction in the state at Tidong. Though the equity value of its solar plants is likely to fetch the group around ₹ 3,400 crore or $400 million in equity value, the overall enterprise value is likely to exceed $700-750 million after accounting for debt, the third person cited above said. 'Most of the solar power plants of the company are either already operational or likely to be operational soon. Hydro, however, is a complex deal where we expect asset by asset sale," the fourth person in the know said. The fact that the hydropower assets are joint ventures–with LNJ Bhilwara group–also complicates the deal for potential suitors. A spokesperson for Macquarie Group declined to comment. Emailed queries to Statkraft, Blackstone, Serentica, Sembcorp and JSW Group did not elicit any response. Also Read | Another PLI scheme hits the Chinese wall The Norwegian group's decision to sell its India assets comes after a steady slide in overall revenue for the group and mounting debt. It has decided to sell its Indian assets and focus on other high-potential markets in the Nordics, Europe and South America to meet its growth targets. Statkraft is the largest renewable energy producer in Europe with an installed capacity of 19.4 GW, of which 12.1 GW is hydropower capacity in Norway. Skin tags vs warts vs moles: How to tell the difference

Dr. Sneha Shah highlights the differences between skin tags, warts, and moles, common skin growths often found on the face and eyelids. Skin tags are soft and harmless, while warts are viral and contagious. Moles, though usually benign, carry a risk of developing into skin cancer. As an oculoplastic and facial aesthetic surgeon, I often encounter several patients who are concerned about small growths on the face and eyelid region. While some of these are harmless, some may require medical attention or removal for cosmetic or functional reasons. Among these common concerns are- Skin tags, warts and moles, which are three seemingly similar concept that in reality are quite different from each other in terms of origin, appearance and risk. Having a proper understanding of how to differentiate among them helps in making informed decisions about the treatment and removal. 1. Skin Tags: Soft, Harmless, and Common What they are: Skin Tags also known as Acrochordons are soft, benign skin growths that develop in areas where there is friction between two skin surfaces or with clothing- like the neck, eyelids, underarms and groin. They are usually flesh- coloured or slightly darker and hang off the skin by a thin stalk (pendunculated). How they feel and look: They are usually small, soft, and movable Often shaped like a tiny balloon on a stalk Usually painless unless irritated by friction or jewellery Why they appear: They are commonly found in middle- aged or overweight individuals and those with diabetes. During pregnancy, hormonal changes can also trigger them. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like You Won't Believe the Price of These Dubai Apartments Binghatti Developers FZE Get Offer Undo Treatment: Although, skin tags are mostly harmless and don't require removal until and unless they are irritated or are cosmetically bothersome. Removal methods include- cryotherapy (freezing), snip excision, or electrocautery, all of which are quick and in- clinic procedures. 2. Warts: Caused by a Virus What they are: Caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV), warts are rough, raised growths. They are contagious and can spread through skin- to- skin contact or by sharing personal items like razors or towels. How they feel and look: They are rough, firm, and grainy texture May appear grayish, brown, or flesh-colored Often have tiny black dots (clotted blood vessels) on the surface Why they appear: Warts are commonly found in children and in people with weakened immune systems. It can develop anywhere, but are particularly bothersome around the eyes or face due to aesthetic reasons. Treatment: Since warts are viral, treatment aims at removing the growth and controlling the recurrence. Treatment options include cryotherapy, laser ablation, topical acids, or electrosurgery. In delicate areas like the eyelids, surgical excision by an oculoplastic surgeon helps in ensuring the safety and minimizes the risk of scarring. 3. Moles: Pigmented and Potentially Risky What they are: Nevi or moles refer to pigmented skin cells that cluster together. They are mostly benign but some can also develop into melanoma a type of skin cancer especially if they change in size, colour or shape. How they feel and look: Usually brown or black, but can be flesh-colored or pink May be flat or raised Can be round, oval, or irregular in shape Why they appear: Moles can be present from birth or can develop due to sun exposure and genetic factors. They usually appear during childhood or adolescence but can change over time. For understanding it's warning signs, we follow the ABCDE rule which is- asymmetry, Border irregularity, color change or multiple colours, a diameter over 6mm, changing shape, size and symptoms which can cause itching and bleeding. Treatment: While benign moles do not necessarily require removal, suspicious ones should be examined by a dermatologist or surgeon. Excision with biopsy acts as the golden standard for diagnosis. When on the eyelids or face, precision is essential for preserving aesthetics and function making oculoplastic evaluation especially valuable. Conclusion While skin tags, warts and moles might appear similar, their causes and implications vary significantly. In my practice, especially when these growths are on or around the delicate eye area, accurate diagnosis is extremely crucial not just for aesthetic purposes but for overall skin health. If you are unsure about a skin growth or notice any changes, make sure that you seek a professional evaluation. It's always better to be cautious about your skin and more importantly your eyes, as they deserve expert care. By Dr. Sneha Shah, Oculoplastic & Facial Aesthetic Surgeon

Last year, US-based fund Advent International sold its majority stake in MTL at a valuation of $1 billion to Asia Pacific-focused private equity firm PAG. "The company is looking to strengthen its presence in its existing areas and bolster its revenue growth. It has identified 4-5 candidates to acquire, and the discussions are ongoing. Two of them are in advanced stages and are expected to happen in the coming months," the people added. MTL did not respond to Mint's emails sent on Friday requesting comment. Also Read: MTR Foods owner Orkla files draft IPO papers, to sell 22.8 mn shares Last year, US-based fund Advent International sold its majority stake in MTL at a valuation of $1 billion to Asia Pacific-focused private equity firm PAG. Initially, Advent sought an exit on its six-year-old bet through an IPO, which was later called off when the private equity firm got the opportunity for a full exit at a better price in the private markets. PAG investments While proceeds from the offer-for-sale were expected to go to Advent, MTL detailed that the fresh issue will be used to repay/prepay outstanding borrowings, in full or in part, and pursue inorganic growth through acquisitions and other strategic initiatives, as per its DRHP filed in August last year. Meanwhile, PAG made its second investment in the packaging sector through a majority stake in Pravesha Industries Pvt. Ltd for $200 million in January. While Manjushree serves a diversified customer base spanning consumer end-markets such as home care, personal care, food and beverages, paints, nutraceuticals, agrochemicals, liquor and spirits, and dairy, Pravesha stands out as a specialised player, focusing solely on pharmaceutical packaging.'PAG's investment has enabled MTL to leverage Pravesha's network to foray into pharmaceutical packaging," one of the people cited above said. Broadly, several investment firms, like Carlyle Group and Bain Capital, have also created dedicated platforms to acquire and integrate mid-size companies. While Carlyle announced its diversified auto platform by combining Highway Industries and Roop Automotives, Bain is also in the process of creating a similar structure. Carlyle also has a platform in the generic pharmaceuticals segment in India through partnering with Viyash Life Sciences in 2021 and acquiring Symed Labs, a manufacturer of niche APIs to enable backward integration. Over the years, Manjushree has acquired companies such as Pearl Polymer, Classy Kontainers, and Hitesh Plastics Pvt., which have helped it increase its geographic presence across India and expand its product categories and customer base in newer industries. MTL, which already has expertise in select areas, plans to further bolster its presence through inorganic and organic growth plans. According to its DRHP, the company reported an operating revenue of ₹ 2,117 crore in FY24, compared to ₹ 2,096 crore a year earlier. Its profit more than doubled to ₹ 140 crore. Growing through acquisitions With other acquisitions such as Varahi in 2017 and facilities of National Plastics Industries Ltd (Napla) in fiscal 2020 in North India, its overall market reach and ability to service diverse clients improved substantially,Crisil said in a report in December. The acquisitions have also helped to improve product diversity (Napla acquisition has added dispensers and sprays to the portfolio), add new clients, and supply new products to existing clients, thereby improving wallet share, the credit rating agency said. 'These helped to expand into new client and product (such as caps and closures) segments. Addition of new plants in Vizag and Mysore will further support client additions, apart from enhancing product profile," Crisil said, adding that the acquisition of the plastic packaging business of Oricon is expected to further strengthen its business risk profile. Manjushree Technopack's presence in North India improved after the acquisition of Varahi, Napla, and PPL. It should continue to help MTL integrate manufacturing units with customers' supply chain systems, underlining the successful integration of its past transactions. Additionally, the newly commissioned Vizag plant, the upcoming Mysore plant, and recent acquisitions will bring the company's facilities closer to customers, Crisil said. India's packaging sector, valued at ₹ 6,399 billion in FY23, is expected to reach ₹ 8,620 billion over the next five years, driven by various factors such as rising disposable incomes, urbanisation, increased demand for processed and packaged goods, and a thriving e-commerce sector, according to a Technopak report last year. The report added that other government initiatives focused on organised retail and food safety are further propelling demand for high-quality, standardised packaging solutions. MTL, which competes with listed rivals such as Moldtek Packaging, TCPL Packaging, Uflex Ltd and EPL Ltd, is one of the largest players in the rigid plastics packaging business in India. It has a strong market share supported by established relationships with customers such as Reckitt Benckiser,Dabur India, Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages, PepsiCo India, and Mondelez India Foods. Also Read: Sheela Foam eyes further investment in Furlenco as furniture rental market grows While the packaging industry is highly fragmented, leading to intense competition that may continue to constrain scalability, pricing power, and profitability, Crisil said MTL may continue to benefit from its well-developed, in-house design facilities, capabilities of diverse manufacturing processes, and ability to pass on raw material price variations to clients. The LASIK route to better vision: Is it for you?

LASIK, or Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, has radically changed circumstances for eye patients by granting them clear vision and better freedom from the use of glasses. Dr Sneha Shah, ophthalmologist and aesthetic surgeon, offers a safety advisory to make the most out of this a doctor decide: LASIK is one of the best-known and commonest refractive surgeries designed to correct vision problems such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. It is one of the many refractive procedures available for correcting refractive error and reducing or eliminating dependency on glasses. So, the best procedure for you can only be decided by an eye surgeon after a complete check-up. LASIK surgery is highly effective, with over 95 per cent of patients achieving 20/40 vision and sometimes even better. The results are long-lasting even though natural ageing processes, such as presbyopia, could still mean reading glasses later on in precautions: Prior to surgery, it is important to follow the doctor's guidance for a smooth procedure. One of the precautions is to discontinue use of contact lenses for 1-2 weeks as it allows the corneas to return to their original shape. Also, share your complete medical and eye history with the doctor, including medications or conditions that could impact the healing process. Do not wear make-up on the day of surgery to reduce the risk of infection. No fragrant products, such as shampoos and creams, are to be used on the day of surgery.A straightforward procedure: LASIK surgery involves preparation with eye-numbing drops. The doctor deploys an instrument to keep the eyelids open. Then a corneal flap is created. It is a thin flap created in the cornea using a microkeratome or femtosecond laser. This flap is carefully folded back to reveal the underlying corneal tissue. This is followed by corneal remodelling, in which a calculated amount of corneal tissue is taken out with a precision laser. Lastly, there is flap positioning—the corneal flap being positioned back to its original Post-surgery care: Rest your eyes and avoid participating in strenuous activities. Use the prescribed antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops and avoid rubbing your eyes to prevent displacing the corneal flap. Wear sunglasses outdoors to protect the eyes and avoid swimming or hot tubs for at least two weeks. Attend all follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process and address any to India Today Magazine
