Fire detectors installed at Dakota Beach informal settlement
ETHEKWINI deputy mayor Zandile Myeni visited the disaster-prone Dakota Beach informal settlement in Prospecton on July 29 to oversee the installation of fire and smoke detectors aimed at improving safety for residents. Also read: Fire devastates Dakota Beach informal settlement The devices, donated by Astron Energy, are part of a broader effort to address the ongoing risks faced by communities living in high-density, informal housing areas. Dakota Beach has experienced several devastating fires over the years, with many families losing homes and belongings. 'We are taking proactive steps to reduce the risk of fire and improve emergency response. We're grateful to Astron Energy for supporting the municipality's efforts to protect our most vulnerable residents,' said Myeni. The installation marks the beginning of a phased rollout of safety technology across other informal settlements in the region. Municipal officials and local disaster management teams were on site to demonstrate how the detectors work and educate residents on fire prevention measures. Astron Energy representatives said the donation forms part of their corporate social investment initiatives, focusing on community safety and resilience. Rootin' tootin' fun at Poinsettia Park fête
POINSETTIA Park Retirement Centre was a hive of activity and buzzed with excitement and wild west-themed fun at the centre's annual fête earlier this month. Also read: Watch: 'Captain Hook' the seal recovering in Durban after bait-stealing ordeal Residents and community members volunteered their time and energy to make the fête an event to remember, dressing to the nines for a blast to the past. Line dancers, led by Dawn Mare, donning cowboy hats, plaid shirts and boots, danced to saloon-themed tunes. Various crafts, delicious foods, and bits and bobs were on sale on the day, and children enjoyed Western games while people socialised with family and friends. Wendy Lloyd, community services manager at Poinsettia Park Retirement Centre, said the centre raises funds throughout the year as it is an NPO. Lloyd added, 'Fundraising is a two-way street as many of our residents and staff enjoy having the opportunity to work together for a good cause. This is done by means of jumble sales and our big fundraiser for the year, our fête. It is our residents who come up with and vote for theme ideas for the annual fête. The funds raised are used for various projects deemed necessary after consultation with residents and management.' An example of this are the extra water tanks that have been installed at the centre. Lloyd was thankful for the community's support and proudly said some visitors commented that they never missed a fête. For more South Coast Sun news, follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. AMANZIMTOTI Cycling Club riders rose to the challenge of the annual Amashova Durban Classic, one of South Africa's iconic road races, on July 20. The 100km route saw the cyclists start in Pietermaritzburg and finish along the Durban beachfront, testing their skill, stamina and endurance. Also read: Umgababa sailor launches sailing venture Chairman of the club, Barry Walker, said nine members of the club completed the event. Jannie Els claimed a second podium finish in the grand master category, showing that age is no barrier as long as there is dedicated training and commitment. Anton van der Merwe put in a solid ride to earn third place in masters, while one of the club's rising stars, Sikle Bester, grabbed third in the U23 category, also managing to finish as the 10th female rider overall. 'The race got underway in chilly, misty conditions in Pietermaritzburg, but temperatures began to rise as the riders made their way toward the coast. However, the final stretch into Durban came with a sting in the tail, a steady easterly headwind made the closing kilometers tough for even the strongest legs. Well done to all who represented our club. Your efforts continue to make us proud,' said Walker. For more South Coast Sun news, follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Still no arrests after dead newborn found in Winklespruit drain
AN INQUEST is underway, but no one has been arrested or charged after the body of a newborn baby was found in a drain in Winklespruit on July 10. Also read: Foetus discovery draws rehab centre into spotlight again Private investigator Brad Nathanson said a witness saw Tetelestai Recovery Centre (TRC) owner, Donovan de Klerk, allegedly discarding something inside a roadside drain, which later turned out to be CCTV equipment and a blue plastic bag which contained the baby. The witness reportedly filmed the contents of the drain and retrieved the items. Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the discovery and said no arrests have been made. De Klerk referred media enquiries to his attorney, Wesley Rogers, who denied his client's involvement. 'My client is not linked to this in any way whatsoever. We have confirmed that the foetus issue is an inquest docket and De Klerk is not a suspect. Reports otherwise are false and defamatory,' said Rogers.
