New Jersey couple fueled by tragedy is on mission to save lives, make roads safer

It was a 38-mile-long journey across South Jersey for dozens of bikers on Sunday. A ride full of heavy hearts as they honored the life of Toni Donato-Bolis and her unborn child. "Looking at my daughter, lifeless, was the most incredible thing that I think that we've ever encountered in the 45 years that we've been together," Bolis' father, Charles Donato, said, standing next to his wife, Mary. Donato said his daughter was expected to give birth two days after she was killed by a distracted driver in Washington Township on June 1, 2011. In the years since, her family members have become advocates for safer driving. "Back when my sister was killed, there were no laws against distracted driving or texting and driving," said Angela Melroy, sister of Toni Donato-Bolis. "We fought up at the state level, and we were able to get a law passed called the Kulesh, Kubert and Bolis' Law back in 2012, which gives penalties for people that are caught texting and driving." Their mission to save lives and do good in the community continued with a raffle and luncheon on Sunday in Gloucester County. The family created The Toni Donato-Bolis and Baby RJ Foundation. They said they've raised more than $100,000 over the years for scholarships for high school seniors. Melroy said it's what her sister would have wanted. "My sister Toni was full of life. She was the biggest giver. So, this is something right up her alley," Melroy said. "If she was here, this is what she would be doing for someone else that we lost, or if anyone else lost someone." Donato said his family will continue dedicating their lives to making a difference. "That's the whole purpose of everything we do — is to keep her name and her unborn child's name alive," he said.

New Jersey woman opens up about experience with parvovirus, warns other moms-to-be

A little-known respiratory virus is spreading, mainly among children, and can be dangerous for pregnant women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Because parvovirus doesn't always have obvious symptoms, the CDC says pregnant women might want to consider wearing masks in crowded areas. Jackie Blalock was worried about her newborn baby Charlotte, who was delivered two weeks early because of a parvovirus infection. The special education teacher in South Jersey says the respiratory infection spread through her school and that seven students in her class had confirmed cases. She suspects she got the virus from sitting at a table with her students. The CDC says parvovirus B19 symptoms are mild or nonexistent. The most common sign of an infection is a facial rash. "The nickname is slapped cheek disease," Blalock said. "I looked like I was slapped across both cheeks." A blood test confirmed her case, and while it's usually not dangerous, parvovirus can be for pregnant women. "I was panicking for my unborn daughter," Blalock said, "There is a risk that the virus can pass across the placenta and infect the baby," Dr. Jenani Jayakumaran with Virtua Health said. Jayakumaran said parvovirus can cause serious complications and even death for an unborn baby. The CDC says there has been a continued increase in cases among teenagers and young adults and is warning pregnant people. "They recommend that patients consider masking as well as standard hygiene things like hand washing," Jayakumaran said. "I wish I had known ahead of time," Blalock said. "I would have worn a mask." Parvovirus is more commonly associated with an infection that affects dogs, but it can't spread between people and animals. "It's something no one talks about, so it is a little scary," Blalock said. "It is uncharted water." Doctors say Charlotte, who's a month old now, is fine, and Blalock is relieved. Blalock says she's now on a mission to warn pregnant women about the potential danger.

$746,853 Jersey Cash 5 jackpot won by nine NJ lottery players. Here's their story

Sometimes you just need a shake things up to change your fortunes. A group of nine Camden County lottery players did just that and won a $746,853 Jersey Cash 5 jackpot on June 26. 'We buy tickets every week,' said the group's leader told the New Jersey Lottery, who buys the tickets at the same Wawa. But this time the leader went to a different Wawa on Whitehorse Pike South in Lindenwold. 'I figured it was time to change our luck. It was the first time I went there.' The leader doesn't check the tickets daily, which consist of quick picks and set numbers The winning ticket was purchased for a Thursday night drawing. 'Because I get a week's worth of numbers, I was checking the tickets late Friday night − actually Saturday morning around 1 a.m. − I'm a night owl. I said 'Let me see what we won.' I was dumbfounded. It was the quick pick that won. I kept checking and rechecking. I couldn't wait to call everybody in the morning,' the leader told the lottery agency. After about five years of playing together, the South Jersey nine finally hit a jackpot. Each of the South Jersey nine received around $80,000 each from the jackpot. 'Nobody could believe it. They thought I was a joking! It was a blessing!' the leader said. 'Last year, we missed the Cash 5 by just one number. We were thrilled to even win that. We like the Cash 5 because it is won so much.' The Jersey Cash 5 has been won 34 times so far in 2025. The Camden County group has no intention of resting on its laurels after hitting a jackapot. 'We've been doing this for five years,' the leader said. 'We're going to keep playing.' Managing a large group of people is not easy task, whether you are going out to dinner or playing the lottery. The New Jersey Lottery said there are steps lottery players should follow when making group plays. Here is a list of recommended steps from the agency: Know who is in your pool and record who has contributed. Establish and agree to ground rules. Know what happens if the group wins. Recruit a pool member as your leader. Choose wisely. Keep all original tickets in a secure place. Determine what game you want to play. Legendary fast food restaurant Roy Rogers makes long-awaited comeback as it plans East Coast expansion

Roy Rogers, the legendary fast food chain, has made a long-awaited comeback in New Jersey. The business opened its newest location in Cherry Hill last week, making it the first restaurant to open in the South Jersey or Philadelphia area in decades. Jim Plamondon, co-president of Roy Rogers, told 'We knew that making the long-anticipated return to Cherry Hill would be impactful, but we never could have predicted the level of excitement and dedication we have experienced over the past week.' He added: 'We are beyond grateful for the decades-long patrons that have visited the store and shared their stories. 'The nostalgia is certainly a driving force behind what we do and our hope to continue growing upon this momentum into new markets.' The Cherry Hill restaurant is the first location to open since the company made six-store openings in Maryland, Virginia, and New Jersey in 2016. Named after 'The King Of The Cowboys', Roy Rogers once ran over 640 restaurants nationwide. Now, the 57-year-old chain runs less than 50 locations across five states. The restaurant celebrated the New Jersey opening with a ribbon cutting and thanked its fans who came out to enjoy 'delicious beef, burgers, and chicken'. Roy Rogers guests flooded the restaurant during its grand opening. One person on Instagram wrote: 'Tried twice going there but couldn't get close to the joint. Cars lined up a mile down the road, cops directing traffic… tried today and same thing, line was out the door and people standing out in the heat waiting to get it.' An influencer known as 'What Should I Eat Philly' on Instagram tried some of the food in a video while visiting the Cherry Hill restaurant. Roy Rogers owner Jim Plamondon suggested she try the Roast Beef Burger, his 'favorite' offering. Reports claimed that everyone was talking about the Double R Bar Burger, while a first-time Roy Rogers eater praised the Chicken Biscuit. The blogger tried all of the recommended foods, and instantly became a fan. Restaurant-goers are now requesting Roy Rogers open new restaurants in states like Florida and Illinois, and a fan even suggested the chain open a location in Mexico.
