Granite and Contri JV chosen for SNWA's Paradise Hills CMAR Project
Granite, a construction and construction materials company, in collaboration with Contri Construction, has announced the selection of its joint venture (JV), Southern Nevada Construction Partners (SNCP), by the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA). The JV has been picked to carry out the preconstruction phase of the Paradise Hills Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) Project. The CMAR Project is part of SNWA's Horizon Lateral Program aimed at enhancing water delivery and system reliability. The project will see the installation of nearly 22,000 linear feet of 120in steel water pipeline, including trenchless crossings beneath existing infrastructure comprising a 108in waterline, Interstate I-11, and Union Pacific Railroad tracks. The pipeline will allow for future connections to Boulder City and other key areas. Additionally, a new pumping station with a capacity of 65 million gallons per day is to be constructed, featuring civil grading, access roads, perimeter security, and desert-compliant landscaping. The development will feature a single-level pump building with mechanical, electrical, and disinfection systems and surge protection infrastructure, as well as advanced instrumentation and control systems. As the lead of the JV, Granite will handle various construction tasks, including clearing operations, concrete structures, and the installation of pump station structures and equipment. Granite's estimated value for the construction contract stands at $240m. Contri Construction will focus on the installation of the 120in pipeline and its components. Granite area manager Don Sawyer said: 'This project showcases our joint venture's local expertise and collaborative strength. Through SNCP, we're delivering a high-value, future-ready water infrastructure solution that supports the long-term needs of Southern Nevada.' Construction is scheduled to commence on 4 January 2027 and be completed by January 2030. This May, Granite secured a $26m contract from San Francisco International Airport to upgrade certain taxiways. Las Vegas Is One Step Closer to Getting a New Airport—What to Know
Las Vegas could soon get a brand new airport. Plans to build a second airport in the Las Vegas metropolitan area just took a major step forward. On May 19, officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and the Bureau of Land Management issued a notice of intent to prepare an environmental impact statement for the Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport in the Ivanpah Valley, located between the small towns of Jean and Primm. Preparing an environmental impact statement is the first step in the federal process for approving a new commercial airport. Local officials called the start of the review a 'major milestone' for the future airport. 'This important step brings us closer to addressing the increasing demand for air travel in one of the nation's fastest growing regions,' Rosemary Vassiliadis, the Clark County director of aviation, said in a statement obtained by Travel + Leisure . The new airport would have two runways and a single terminal building. The proposed site is about 23 miles from the Vegas strip, and could accommodate both domestic and international flights. Plans to build a second airport for the Las Vegas area have been in the works for more than 25 years, but the project has taken on new urgency. Passenger numbers at Las Vegas' Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) are estimated to meet its full capacity of 63 million to 65 million fliers per year by 2030, according to the Clark County Department of Aviation. 'As a second commercial airport, SNSA will add much-needed capacity, improve service reliability, and ensure Southern Nevada continues to thrive as a global destination for business and tourism,' Vassiliadis said. With its opulent resorts, over-the-top casinos, and thriving nightlife scene, Las Vegas is a perennial hit with travelers. And in recent years, it's been growing even more popular among visitors, thanks to new events and attractions such as the Las Vegas Grand Prix and the immersive concert venue, the Sphere, which opened in September 2023. The next step in the proposed airport's approval process is for the FAA and the BLM to hold a series of three public meetings in July to cover the potential environmental impact the new facility could have on the surrounding area. One concern, according to the local newspaper The Nevada Current , is whether the airport will threaten endangered species in the Ivanpah Valley, including the desert tortoise and the rare white-margined beardtongue wildflower. The first meeting will be held virtually on July 29, and participants can register on the project's website. Two in-person meetings are scheduled to take place on July 30 at the East Las Vegas Library and on July 31 at Primm Valley Casino Resorts.

Las Vegas seniors receive free legal help with this monthly program
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Southern Nevada Senior Law Program is offering free legal services to seniors across the valley through its monthly Ask-A-Lawyer Program. Attorneys will meet with seniors and answer legal questions or assess a legal problem. The program aims to protect the rights, dignity, and independence of our most vulnerable through advocacy, education, and legal support. 'At the Senior Law Program, we are able to make sure that they do not get taken advantage of, they don't get abused, and they can have their legal rights protected,' Executive Director Diane Fearon said. '[We offer] some immediate advice to that senior who doesn't know where to go or what to do.' Seniors can receive free legal aid for estate planning, housing disputes, scams and fraud, and public benefits, among other pressing legal matters. Paul Thornton signed up for the Ask-A-Lawyer Program following his wife's death. 'They talk about not only just the will as to who you want to be the beneficiary,' Thornton said. 'They go over every detail. They make sure that you are leaving things to the people you want to. It's real comforting to know that my assets will go to the individuals that I have chosen to receive those.' Supervising attorney Chelsea Crowton has met with dozens of seniors throughout the program. She said the three most common issues are estate planning, elder exploitation, and scams, as well as consumer concerns. 'Contract dispute, landlords, any type of merchant disputes, we're resolving that in favor of the seniors,' Crowton said. The Ask-A-Lawyer program brings Senior Law Program attorneys to select senior centers one day each month for four-hour sessions. Seniors can schedule free 30-minute consultations to discuss legal matters and receive critical legal guidance. If additional legal assistance is needed, the attorney will help schedule a follow-up appointment at SLP's office. '[Those five senior centers] serve a variety of needs where we're dealing with seniors who are facing economic issues, housing instability, and food insecurity,' Crowton said. Southern Nevada Senior Law Program aims to ensure Southern Nevada seniors have access to the justice they deserve. 'It's a pleasure to come into a place where they treat you, especially as a senior, as a human being,' Thornton said.
