Flooding rains are falling in the desert. Here's where.

Washington Post04-06-2025
The city of Las Vegas averages only 4.18 inches of rain per year — with heavy rains a rarity in the desert. But on Wednesday, much of the southern Nevada and northern Arizona desert are included in a flood watch until 11 p.m., with some locations set to receive months' worth of rain in only a matter of hours.

Tropical disturbance threatens Gulf Coast as parts of Louisiana could see a foot of rain or more

A tropical disturbance is bringing heavy rain and the risk of flash floods to the northern Gulf Coast, triggering flood watches from Mississippi to southeast Texas, forecasters say. According to the National Weather Service, the broad area of low pressure is currently just south of Mississippi and drifting westward, with coastal Louisiana in its projected path. 'This system is forecast to continue moving westward across the northern portion of the Gulf through tonight, reaching the coast of Louisiana by Thursday,' the National Hurricane Center said in its latest forecast. How much rain could fall? The current forecast from the National Weather Service office in New Orleans calls for 2 to 4 inches of rain south of Interstate 10 through Saturday, with the potential for up to 8 inches or more in some areas. 'Ponding of water in low lying and poor drainage areas is likely,' the weather service said, with the potential for more significant flooding in low-lying areas 'if the higher end rainfall totals are realized.' Further west, up to 15 inches of rain is possible in parts of central, south central and southwest Louisiana through Saturday, the NWS office in Lake Charles warned. What are the chances of it intensifying? Low. According to the hurricane center, there is a 30% chance that the system will become a tropical depression. 'Some development could occur before the system moves westward into Louisiana later today or tonight, although the chances of the system developing into a tropical depression are low," the hurricane center said. "Regardless of development, heavy rainfall could produce localized flash flooding over portions of the north-central Gulf Coast through Friday.' How is hurricane season shaping up? The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1 and runs through the end of November, has gotten off to a relatively slow start. In May, forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted there would be 13 to 19 named storms, with six to 10 becoming hurricanes and three to five of those becoming major hurricanes (with winds of more than 110 mph). A typical hurricane season averages 14 named storms. So far, there have been three: Tropical Storms Andrea, Barry and Chantal. Solve the daily Crossword

At least 4 dead and 1,300 evacuated after heavy rain in South Korea

Updated [hour]:[minute] [AMPM] [timezone], [monthFull] [day], [year] SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Two days of heavy downpours in South Korea have killed at least four people and forced more than 1,300 others to evacuate, officials said Thursday. One person was killed when their car was buried by soil and concrete after a retaining wall of an overpass collapsed in Osan, just south of Seoul , during heavy rain on Wednesday, the Interior and Safety Ministry said. Three other people were separately found dead Thursday in a submerged car, a stream, and a flooded basement in southern regions. Ministry officials said they were still investigating whether those deaths were directly caused by heavy rain. The heavy rain has forced the evacuation of 1,382 people from their homes, the ministry said in a statement, adding 46 flights have been cancelled. Parts of southern South Chungcheong province have received up to 420 millimeters (16.5 inches) of rain since Wednesday, according to the ministry.

Want perfect weather year-round? This U.S. map shows where to find it.

What makes a perfect weather day? Ten people could easily have 10 different answers. Still, most would agree that it takes a combination of mild temperatures and minimal rain to get a climate that's just right. But few places in the U.S. have that kind of Goldilocks weather year-round. Yahoo News used data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to calculate the number of days in each county across the United States with nice weather, based on daily climate data from 2022 to 2024. Nice weather is defined as daily maximum temperature staying between 60°F and 85°F and rainfall remaining below 1 mm. San Diego County in California came the closest to having four seasons of beautiful weather, logging about 330 — or about 11 months — of nice weather days per year. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Aleutians East Borough in Alaska had the fewest nice weather days in a year, just 11. People willing to compromise on rain and temperature ranges may still be able to reach their version of climate perfection outside of the California Coast though. Many counties in Florida boast warm temperatures throughout the year, but there's a rainy season from May through October. People with high heat tolerance may also enjoy Southwestern areas, like Phoenix, where half of the year can reach over 85°F, but winters are rarely cold. Find out which part of the country has the perfect weather for you in the table below.
