Report: Cubs add RHP Spencer Turnbull on minor-league deal

July 18 - The Chicago Cubs signed free agent veteran right-hander Spencer Turnbull to a minor-league contract, the New York Post reported Friday. Turnbull, 32, posted a 1-1 record with a 7.11 ERA in three appearances (one start) with the Toronto Blue Jays before being released on June 27. He allowed five runs on 12 hits in 6 1/3 innings. Turnbull spent his first five MLB seasons with the Detroit Tigers, highlighted by his no-hitter against the Seattle Mariners in 2021. He missed the entire 2022 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Turnbull is 16-30 with a 4.31 ERA in 81 career games (68 starts) with the Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies and Blue Jays. --Field Level Media

Former star Alabama pitcher released by MLB team

After being designated for assignment by the organization a few days ago, former Alabama Crimson Tide pitcher Spencer Turnbull has been officially released by the Toronto Blue Jays, per the team's MLB transactions' page. Prior to his release, Turnbull had made only three appearances with the Blue Jays so far this season, one of which was a start. Over that sample size, which was 6.1 innings pitched, the right-hander owned a 1-1 record with a 7.11 ERA and a 4:4 K:BB ratio. The former Alabama right-hander also made five starts in the minor leagues this season with Toronto's organization where he owned a 7.13 ERA across 17.2 innings pitched. Following his release by Toronto, Turnbull will now reenter free agency where the veteran right-hander will look for a new team.
