Former Alabama starting pitcher designated for assignment by MLB team
According to an announcement Wednesday afternoon by the organization, the Toronto Blue Jays have designated former Alabama Crimson Tide pitcher Spencer Turnbull for assignment.
Turnbull had previously signed a free agent deal with the Blue Jays back in May after going unsigned throughout the offseason.
So far this season, the veteran right-hander had made three appearances with Toronto in the major leagues, one of which was a start. Over those three appearances, Turnbull owns a 1-1 record with a 7.11 ERA and 4:4 K:BB ratio over 6.1 innings pitched.
A former second round pick from the 2014 MLB draft out of Alabama, Turnbull has also made a combined five starts in the minor leagues so far this season between both Triple-A Buffalo and Low-A Dunedin. Combined between the two levels, Turnbull owns an 0-3 record with a 7.13 ERA and 14:9 K:BB ratio across 17.2 innings pitched.

(AP/Photo/Jim Davis) BOSTON (AP) — The struggling Boston Red Sox could be getting some offensive help soon. Manager Alex Cora said Masataka Yoshida would start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday. The 31-year-old DH/outfielder has been out the entire season following surgery on his right shoulder in October. Advertisement 'He'll go on a rehab assignment. We'll see how many at-bats he needs,' Cora said Saturday before the Red Sox faced the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park. 'He's moving well, the swing feels great, the throwing has been a lot better. He's been able to bounce back, so we just have to map it out and see how we're going to do it.' Cora said he'd also play some games in the outfield. Last season, he was primarily the DH, getting into left field only once in 108 games. In his first season in 2023 after signing a $90-million, five-year free agent deal with the team, he played 85 games in left. On Saturday, Yoshida was shagging fly balls during batting practice in right field, ran the bases while others were hitting and took BP. Advertisement Also, third baseman Alex Bregman, who has been sidelined since late May with a strained right quad, ran lightly in the infield, and took grounders at third, throwing across the diamond before the Red Sox took BP. 'He's just finishing taking ground balls,' Cora said. 'It was a good day for him and Masa.' When he was injured, Bregman was one of the club's most productive hitters, batting .299 with 11 homers and 35 RBIs in 51 games. Cora recently said the 31-year-old Bregman isn't expected to return until after the All-Star break. Boston entered Saturday on a season-high six game losing streak, its longest since September 2022. The Red Sox dropped the opener of a three-game series against Toronto, 9-0, on Friday night. The Red Sox signed Bregman as a free agent to a $120-million, three-year contract in mid-February. ___ AP MLB:

Social media reacts to Alabama players signing undrafted NBA free agent deals
Over the course of this past Wednesday and Thursday night, the Alabama Crimson Tide did not see any of their four draft-eligible players selected in the two rounds of the 2025 NBA draft. Yes, throughout both the first-and-second rounds, none of Alabama's four draft-eligible prospects - Mark Sears, Grant Nelson, Clifford Omoruyi, and Chris Youngblood - heard their names called, and instead entered undrafted free agency late Friday night. Since, it has not taken those four Alabama players long to find a new home at the professional level either, as all have signed an undrafted free agent deal as of Friday, June 27. Let's take a look at some reactions on social media to Alabama's draft prospects landing with NBA teams on free agent deals. Former UNC wide receiver praises Bill Belichick for his coaching style
This former UNC football player had some nice things to say about Chapel Bill. 2024 was another lost football season for the North Carolina Tar Heels, whom – despite clinching their sixth-consecutive trip to a bowl game – finished with their second losing record in four seasons. If you thought last year was bad for UNC, take a look at Florida State. The Seminoles started 2024 ranked, as they typically are, then proceeded to win just two games. North Carolina reloaded its roster this offseason under new head coach Bill Belichick, who brings eight Super Bowls and countless experience to Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels' greatest replacements come on defense, though, replacing their entire starting defensive line with the likes of Pryce Yates and Vilbert Smith. Gavin Blackwell, who played his first four collegiate seasons at UNC, had an opportunity to learn from Belichick for a few months. Now on FSU, Blackwell praised his former head coach, despite never suiting up for him. "He was great," Blackwell said. "Honestly, I have nothing bad to say about Coach (Bill) Belichick. He loves football. Everything you see online and stuff like that, I would kind of say the media portrays it a little bit differently than what it is inside the building. He loves his players, he loves his coaches and he's all about ball. He kind of brought more of an NFL aspect to college and that's kind of what they're running there. But himself, he's down-to-earth dude, not a big-headed guy. You can go up to him, have a conversation, talk ball with him. He loves that type of stuff and when you show that you're interested, he's gonna make sure he gives you that same respect and try to help you as much as he can. He's got eight Super Bowls. Great dude, wish them the best." Blackwell redshirted his first collegiate season in 2021, appearing in just one game, but emerged the following year with 239 receiving yards and his lone touchdown. Now on a Mike Norvell-led roster desperately searching for productive talent, Blackwell has a real chance to put up WR1 numbers.
