Clemson head coach Erik Bakich on the Tigers not being done in the transfer portal
Clemson baseball's early postseason exit was a bitter pill to swallow, but head coach Erik Bakich is already shifting focus to what comes next — and he's not wasting any time. After another disappointing finish in regional play, Bakich is using the extra time to aggressively reshape his roster through the transfer portal. The Tigers won 45 games and reached the ACC Championship, but a crushing late-inning loss to West Virginia followed by a lopsided defeat to Kentucky ended their season short of expectations. 'We are fully aware that we took a step back in the month of June,' Bakich said Tuesday on SportsTalk with Phil Kornblut. 'That is all that really matters, and we had nothing to hang our hat on for success this season… So for us, we are heads down and instead of talking about it, we are going to be about it.' Since his arrival in 2022, Bakich has made it clear the standard at Clemson is a return to Omaha. After coming close in 2024 with a Super Regional run, the 2025 season marked a step back — and Bakich is determined to fix that quickly. So far, he's added seven players through the portal, including five hitters aimed at addressing offensive inconsistency and two arms to bolster the pitching staff. One of the first portal pickups was Ariston Veasey, a hard-throwing righty from Alabama, followed by Catawba transfer Hayden Simmerson. Still, Bakich says they're far from done. 'Our coaching staff has been on a mission to find some high-impact dudes, and we are still looking,' he said. 'Trying to find one or two more pitchers… Clemson is looking, and we want an absolute dude.' Advertisement * Fill-in the blank: Notre Dame greats Todd Lyght and Manti Te'o are on the 2026 College Football Hall of Fame ballot and it's BLANK that Lyght is not already in the Hall. * Is there any reason Te'o shouldn't be inducted this year? * Fill-in the blank: It's BLANK that former Notre Dame women's basketball teammates Hannah Hidalgo and Olivia Miles are among 21 players competing to make the Team USA roster for the FIBA AmeriCup Team. * Fill-in the blank: Notre Dame men's basketball hosting DePaul in an exhibition game in September is BLANK. * Major rule changes are on the way for both men's and women's college basketball this upcoming season. Both men's and women's coaches will now be able to challenge calls. Advertisement In the men's game, coaches will now be able to challenge: Reviewing 'out-of-bounds calls, basket interference/goaltending and whether a secondary defender was in the restricted-area arc.' Teams will need to use a timeout to challenge and if the challenge is successful, they'll be allowed one additional review for the rest of the game, including overtime. The NCAA says the changes in men's basketball aim to 'enhance the flow of the game.' -Do you Buy or Sell it? * In the women's game: Coaches will be issued a challenge, but their rules are different. Coaches will be able to challenge 'ruled out-of-bounds violations, ruled backcourt violations, whether a change in team possession occurred before the ruling of a foul where free throws would be involved, and whether a foul was assessed to the correct player. Advertisement But for the women, teams will not need to have a timeout to challenge. But instead, if you lose your challenge it will result in a technical foul for 'an excessive timeout.' -Do you Buy or Sell that? * Oakland A's centerfielder Denzel Clarke went up over the wall on a Statcast-projected 398-foot drive hit by Anaheim's Nolan Schanuel to rob him of a home run. Do you Buy or Sell that catch as more impressive than Derek Jeter's more famous running catch when he fell into the stands at Yankee Stadium?
