BJP MLA writes to Amit Shah seeking temporary ban on meat, liquor shops
New Delhi: Delhi BJP MLA Tarvinder Singh Marwah has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting him to temporarily shut all liquor and meat shops on the routes of Kanwar Yatra, scheduled to begin later this month. Marwah, one of the three Sikh MLAs of the BJP in Delhi, stated in his letter that a temporary ban on liquor and meat shops will ensure the piety of the Kanwar Yatra and prevent any possible untoward incident. During the Hindu calendar's holy month of 'Sawan', devotees undertake Kanwar Yatra on foot, carrying water from holy rivers to offer it to Lord Shiva at various temples. This year, the Kanwar Yatra will begin on July 11. Marwah, a member of the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee, said the Sri Guru Singh Sabha is a religious body that honours all religions. 'We appeal that meat and liquor shops on the designated routes of the Kanwar Yatra are temporarily shut down so that its sanctity is maintained and there are no untoward incidents,' the MLA wrote to Shah. He sought time for a meeting between the office bearers of Sri Guru Singh Sabha and Shah, so that they could submit a memorandum to Shah. Marwah also said that the members of Sri Guru Singh Sabha will approach the owners of meat and liquor shops, urging them to respect the religious sentiments of the devotees. Drinking water, medicines and resting camps will also be arranged by the Gurudwaras for the kanwariyas, he said.

Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee forms 34-member panel for Akal Takht jathedar service rules, excludes Sri Guru Singh Sabha and DSGMC
1 2 Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has constituted a 34-member committee, comprising heads of various religious organisations, Sikh scholars, intellectuals and others, to draft service rules for the jathedar of Akal Takht. However, the Sri Guru Singh Sabha, one of the oldest Sikh institutions, has objected to its exclusion, along with some other prominent Sikh bodies, from the committee's composition. An SGPC statement issued here on Thursday announced that SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami had formed the committee. However, Sri Guru Singh Sabha general secretary Harmanjit Singh questioned whether the exclusion of several important Sikh institutions by the SGPC was a deliberate attempt to distance these bodies from the SGPC and Akal Takht. He said Sri Guru Singh Sabha, established in 1873 for the propagation of Sikhism and still actively contributing to the Panth, was one of the oldest Sikh organisations. "The exclusion of such prominent Sikh institutions committed to Sikh representation and dedicated to Akal Takht raises serious concerns about the intentions of the SGPC," he said. He asked Dhami to reconsider and include representatives from such prominent organisations, which, he said, would help keep the Panth united under Akal Takht. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar BOX Delhi gurdwara body slams exclusion The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) on Thursday took exception to being excluded from the 34-member committee constituted by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to draft service rules for the jathedar of Akal Takht. In a statement issued by its president Harmeet Singh Kalka and general secretary Jagdip Singh Kahlon, DSGMC said SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami was indulging in favouritism towards the Badal family. They accused him of excluding representatives from DSGMC and the Prabandhak Committee of the Takhat Sri Harimandir Ji Patna Saheb from the 34-member panel. They said DSGMC was the second-largest panthic body after SGPC, and excluding it exposed Dhami's partiality.

Sukanta apologises for hurling ‘slipper' at Sikh CISF officer
Kolkata: Junior Union minister and Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar, in a statement on Tuesday, apologised for the June 12 incident when he threw a placard, symbolically representing a slipper, that hit a Sikh CISF officer in his own security detail. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It happened during a BJP protest over the Maheshtala violence. The issue snowballed into a major controversy after a Kolkata-based Sikh body, Sri Guru Singh Sabha, lodged an FIR against Majumdar at Kalighat police station on June 14. In a statement on X, Majumdar, referring to the protests, said: "Amidst the chaotic circumstances, a placard I hurled in protest, which symbolically represented a slipper, accidentally landed on the sacred turban of a Sikh CISF officer assigned to my security. If this unfortunate and unintended incident hurt the religious sentiments of any member of the Sikh community, I offer my deepest and most sincere apologies. It was never my intention to cause any offence or disrespect." Majumdar said the incident took place on June 12, "during a peaceful and democratic protest in front of the residence of the chief minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, at Kalighat, Kolkata. I, along with several senior state leaders and karyakartas of Bharatiya Janata Party Paschimbanga, was detained by Kolkata Police and forcefully placed in a prison van." "Both I and every karyakarta of Bharatiya Janata Party, West Bengal, hold the religious beliefs, the sanctity of the turban, and the revered traditions of the Sikh community in highest esteem," the minister added. Sri Guru Singh Sabha general secretary Inderjeet Singh Sekhon, who lodged the FIR, said: "Such an act is not only an affront to the Sikh community but also violates the basic fabric of India's constitutional values that ensure respect for all religions and communities. The deliberate nature of the act is clearly visible, leaving no scope for any unintentional justification." The FIR was lodged under BNS sections 302 (protects individuals from actions intended to harm their religious sentiments) and 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt).

Thai govt acts in kirpan row
Kolkata: The department of religious affairs of Thailand has issued a circular, stating that all establishments, such as hotels, schools, colleges and offices, will admit Sikhs and treat with respect their '5K symbols' of kesh (unshorn hair), kanga (comb), kara (steel bracelet), kirpan (dagger) and kachera (undershorts). Satnam Singh Ahluwalia, a member of the state minorities commission, was on April 12 denied check-in by a hotel in Bangkok as he was carrying a kirpan, one of the '5K symbols' of Sikhism . The staff at Shangri-La Bangkok had declined to accommodate Ahluwalia unless he deposited his kirpan with the security every time he entered and exited the hotel. Sri Guru Singh Sabha of Thailand took up the matter after Ahluwalia apprised them of the harassment at the hotel. According to an official at Thailand consulate, the circular was issued on May 22 in response to Sri Guru Singh Sabha of Thailand, which, in turn, took up the matter with the religious affairs department. The circular states: "The religious affairs department would like to inform that it has disseminated knowledge about the five religious symbols of Sikhism, which are religious identities that should be correctly and appropriately adorned, to various agencies relating to tourism and hotel businesses, such as the Royal Thai Police, the Immigration Bureau, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Thai Hotels Association, and the Professional Tour Guide Association of Thailand, so that they understand and respect peaceful coexistence in a multicultural society and use it as a guideline for treating people of different religions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 180k traders trust IC Markets for CFD trading | Sign up today IC Markets Learn More Undo " Ahluwalia said, "The Thailand govt has taken action to protect the dignity of Sikhs within one month. Kirpan is not a weapon but a religious symbol for us. Posters have been put up for sensitising Thai people about our five religious symbols. The circular brings cheers to the Sikh community all over the world."
