I did freestyle because I wanted a change without much focus: Srihari Nataraj

After setting the 'India best' time in 200m freestyle earlier this month, two-time Olympian swimmer Srihari Nataraj is considering pursuing the style along with his favourite backstroke in 2026. Srihari, who competed in 100m backstroke in the Paris Olympics, hopes to make a decision early next year, in time for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. 'I've not made plans for the future. Still, 50m backstroke is my main event and it depends on how I feel. I have two chances, at the World University Games (WUG) in Germany (next month) and at the Asian championships in Ahmedabad (in October), to check myself in the 200m freestyle. I will decide in January or February whether I am going to stick to backstroke or do both,' Srihari told The Hindu during the National aquatics championships at the Kalinga Stadium on Tuesday. On his freestyle mark in the Singapore National swimming championships, where he clocked 1:48.66 to break Sajan Prakash's four-year-old record of 1:49.73, Srihari said: 'Singapore was a good outing for me. I took it as a preparatory event, not where I tried to peak. I did freestyle because I wanted a change without much focus. Freestyle is always a second event for me, and I love competing in Singapore.' Srihari is preparing well for the WUG. 'My performances are getting analysed, I'm working on my strength and fine-tuning my game.' Having spent two decades in the pool, 24-year-old Srihari feels he is in better shape. 'It has been very long – it's my 10th year in the Indian team. I've grown as a swimmer in the last two years to know myself and my sport better. Now my mind and body are in sync. I've developed as an athlete, and my knowledge is better,' said Srihari.

Srihari and Dhinidhi among the participants in National aquatics championships

Top swimmers of the country, including Paris Olympians Srihari Natraj and Dhinidhi Desinghu, Sajan Prakash, Aryaan Mehra, Kushagra Rawat, Shoan Ganguly and Hashika Ramachandra, will be seen in action in the National aquatics championships starting at the Kalinga Stadium Aquatic Centre here on Sunday. While Dhinidhi will return to the Nationals after skipping the last edition, to prepare for the Olympics, Srihari will compete in only one event, 50m backstroke, as he will train for next month's World University Games (WUG) in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany. 'The timing of the Nationals does not suit me as I am looking at peaking for the World University Games in two weeks. Had I competed in all five days, I would have lost a minimum of 10 days of training for the WUG,' said Srihari, who recently set the best Indian time for 200m freestyle. Following a sensational performance of winning 11 medals, including nine gold, in the Uttarakhand National Games in January, Dhinidhi will be brimming with confidence. Sajan, who made a comeback in the National Games after a break, wants to clock a sub-two-minute time in his main event, 200m butterfly. The championship assumes importance as it will serve as the last qualifying event (before the cut-off date of June 29) for the World championships to be held in Singapore next month. Besides, it will serve as a screening event for the selection of swimmers for the National camp leading up to the Asian championships to be held in Ahmedabad from October 1 to 15.

Revanth Reddy Expands Telangana Cabinet, 3 Ministers Sworn-In

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Sunday expanded his Cabinet by inducting three ministers. G Vivek Venkataswamy, Adluri Laxman Kumar and Vakiti Srihari were sworn in as ministers by Governor Jishnu Dev Varma at Raj Bhavan. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, his Cabinet colleagues, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Mahesh Kumar Goud and senior officials attended the ceremony. Vivek took oath in English while the remaining two were sworn in Telugu. This is the first expansion in the Cabinet, which was formed on December 7, 2023, with the swearing-in of the Chief Minister and 11 ministers. The long-delayed expansion took place after the All India Congress Committee (AICC) cleared the names of three ministers. Though there are vacancies in the Cabinet, the party leadership decided to keep three posts vacant. The state can have a maximum of 18 ministers, including the Chief Minister. Vivek Venkataswamy, a former MP and son of former Union Minister G. Venkataswamy, and Government Whip Adluri Laxman are from the Scheduled Castes, while Srihari is from the Backward Classes. Ramachandru Naik is a tribal MLA. Venkataswamy, an industrialist, had quit the BJP to join Congress a few weeks before the 2023 Assembly elections. He was elected to Parliament in 2009 from the Peddapalli constituency. He later joined TRS (now BRS) to put pressure on the Congress over the demand for statehood for Telangana. After the Telangana Bill was passed in the Parliament in 2014, he returned to Congress. He again returned to the TRS in 2016. In 2019, he resigned as advisor to the Telangana government and quit the ruling party after he was denied a ticket to contest from the Peddapalli Lok Sabha seat. He joined the BJP, which he quit again in November 2023 to return to Congress. He was elected to the Assembly from Chennur constituency in Mancherial district in 2023, defeating sitting MLA Balka Suman of BRS. Adluri Laxman Kumar is a senior Congress leader and first-time MLA from Dharmapuri in Jagitial district. Srihari, who began his political career as a Youth Congress leader, has also been associated with Congress for over three decades. He was elected to the Assembly from the Makthal Assembly constituency in Narayanpet district. Earlier, the Chief Minister also announced that Ramachandra Naik will be appointed as Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. He is an MLA from Dornakal constituency in Mahabubabad district.

Why is Srihari Nataraj's gold-winning effort in 200m freestyle not classified as National Record?

Srihari Nataraj won the gold medal in 200m men's freestyle at the Singapore National Swimming Championship on Sunday. The 24-year-old, who represented India at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics, clocked 1:48:66s at the Singapore Sports School. This time was faster than the existing National Record which was set by Sajan Prakash in 2018. However, Srihari will not be credited with the NR with his performance. What is the difference between National Record and Best Indian Performance in swimming? Srihari's timing in Singapore was fast enough to earn it the 'Best Indian Time' or the 'Best Indian Performance. But, despite it being quicker than Sajan's existing National Record in 200m freestyle (1:50.35s), which was set in 2018, Srihari will not be the holder of a new NR. Why? Because the Swimming Federation of India (SFI) doesn't count the timings in overseas events for National Records. According to SFI senior vice-president Virendra Nanavati, a timing will only be considered as a National Record if its set in the National Aquatics Championships organised by SFI. This can happen in three age categories: sub-junior, junior, and senior. If an Indian swimmer does well in any other internationally-recognised event, even if it is the Olympics or the Asian Games, their timings will be called as a 'Best Indian Performance'.
