Teesside groups aim to deliver knockout blow to knife crime
A total of £80,000 has been shared between organisations aiming to tackle knife grants, awarded through the Cleveland Unit for the Reduction of Violence (CURV), were available to charities and community Boxing Academy was among the beneficiaries, receiving £17,120 to help coaches run sessions twice a week, while St John Ambulance was awarded £14,240 to deliver first aid Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Matt Storey, said knife crime was a "significant concern" for authorities on Teesside. Other groups to be given funding were:ARC Stockton, which received £12,350 for school workshopsMFC Foundation, which was awarded £14,000 for school initiativesBudo for Change, granted £13,560 for targeted intervention such as combat sports classes, holiday sessions and mentoring for vulnerable peopleEducation Training Collective, which will use £7,440 for a college-based education programme involving guest speakersOn a visit to Billingham Boxing Academy, Storey said: "Youth violence continues to be a significant concern for us with hospital admissions relating to knife crime remaining high."It is therefore paramount that we highlight the need for continued, sustained, coordinated action to protect young people and communities from harm."The creativity and passion demonstrated by Billingham Boxing Academy and all the other applicants has been remarkable – the selection process was incredibly tough."CURV sits within the office of the PCC and is one of 20 violence reduction units across the focuses on developing preventative measures, analysing the root causes of crime and bringing organisations together in partnerships. Woman dead, kids hurt in train collision
A woman has died after a vehicle collided with a grain train in the southern tip of Western Australia. Emergency services were called to a level crossing at Redmond-Hay River Rd in Redmond, Albany shortly before 2pm on Wednesday after reports of a car and train collision. Inside the vehicle were five people, including three children under 10 and a man and woman, both in their 30s. The woman suffered critical injuries and was trapped inside the vehicle, with crews needing several hours to free her. Three fire trucks, six St John Ambulance paramedics and police officers were at the scene. Paramedics treated the man in his 30s and the three children for minor injuries before they were transported to Albany Health Campus. Witnesses said the grain train sounded its horn for several seconds before it hit the ute, dragging it along the tracks for about 40m before stopping, the ABC reports. Two men who were on the train were not injured in the incident, but are being treated for shock. Officers are continuing the investigation into the collision. A woman has died after a freight train collided with a family car, leaving three children and a man injured. The collision occurred about 2pm on Wednesday at a level crossing on Redmond-Hay River Road, in the Albany suburb of Redmond in Western Australia 's south. Emergency services rushed to the scene where a woman aged in her thirties remained trapped in the vehicle with critical injuries. The other passengers - a man in his thirties and three children aged under 10 years - were all taken to Albany Health Campus with non-life threatening injuries. Two men aboard the freight train were also treated for shock. Witnesses said the train sounded its horn before colliding with the car, which it pushed for about 30 to 40 metres before both came to a stop, the ABC reported. Officers reportedly told witnesses both the road and train lines would remain closed to traffic until major crash detectives conducted their assessments. A number of Albany Fire and Rescue vehicles and St John Ambulance crews attended the scene along with local police. A rescue helicopter was dispatched to the scene but was called back shortly after. Officers from the Major Crash Squad are travelling to Albany from Perth to investigate the incident. Great Southern Police Acting Superintended Rhonda Alexander urged anyone with information or footage of the incident to contact police.

Emergency services work to free occupant of vehicle hit by train near Albany
West Australian emergency services are working frantically to extricate a passenger of a vehicle that collided with a grain train at a level crossing in Albany. Multiple occupants of the vehicle were injured in the collision, which occurred at about 2pm on Redmond-Hay River Road, near the intersection of Siding Road in the suburb of Redmond. The ABC understands there were five people in the car — a man and a woman in their 30s and three children under the age of 10. The woman is in a critical condition. The man and three children will be taken to Albany Health Campus but are understood to be unscathed or suffering minor injuries. Three Albany Fire and Rescue vehicles and six crews from St John Ambulance are at the scene. Firefighters are working to free the person trapped in the vehicle, which witnesses described as a dark-coloured Mitsubishi Triton. The RAC rescue helicopter has been dispatched from Perth and is en route. Two males on the train are understood to have escaped injury but are being treated for shock. Witnesses said the train sounded its horn before it hit the ute and pushed it 30 to 40 metres before both came to a stop. Officers on the scene told witnesses that the road and train line had been closed and would remain so until major crash detectives assessed the scene.
