Draw after dramatic ending
Waitaki Boys' players celebrate after retaining the Leo O'Malley Trophy with a 19-19 draw in the Blood Match on Saturday. PHOTO: NIC DUFF Complete and utter pandemonium. That is the only way to describe the frantic and, for a moment, confusing ending to Saturday's Blood Match between Waitaki Boys' and St Kevin's. St Kevin's led 19-12 with time up on the clock, but Waitaki Boys' had a lineout 5m from the line. Their driving maul fell short and two more pick and go attempts also fell short before replacement prop Andrew Kaufana scored. It was then over to 17-year-old Hau'ofa Latu to line up the conversion from out wide. As he slotted it between the uprights to end the match with the scores tied, cheers erupted from the Waitaki Boys' sideline. Waitaki held the Leo O'Malley Trophy, so a draw meant they retained the treasured "peanut". There was some confusion as the Southern Schools Rugby Championship determines the winner of a one-off game through a series of tiebreakers including who scored the first try, which was St Kevin's. However, it was soon clarified that Waitaki Boys' did in fact retain the trophy as this was a game held outside that competition. It was the first time the Blood Match had ended in a draw since 2006. Latu said while he was nervous taking the final conversion, he was confident when lining up the kick. "All I can hear is the SKC crowd just going at me. "All I thought was just, do what I do." It was a frantic end to the annual clash with both sides scoring a pair of tries late. St Kevin's led 7-0 at halftime but Waitaki Boys' equalised after the break. Waitaki Boys' took the lead after a well-worked move off a lineout put Latu in space down the right touchline. He stabbed a chip kick ahead and the lightning-fast Jack Nicol beat everyone to it to score. Not letting the game slip away, St Kevin's hit back. They got the ball out wide to fullback Kobe Narruhn, who drew in his defender and gave it to Louie Hose on his outside. The winger then gave it back to Narruhn on the inside to run away and score. St Kevin's had another just a few minutes later when a midfield bomb took an awkward bounce. Narruhn was able to grab it and pass to Kenton Tokai, who sprinted away to score in the corner, setting up the grandstand finish. • St Kevin's showed immense courage to back up 24 hours later for a Southern Schools Rugby Championship game. They were beaten 43-5 by Otago Boys' 1sts yesterday. Just three other games were played at the weekend thanks to the shocking weather. John McGlashan 2nds pipped Southland Boys' 2nds 18-15, King's 2nds beat Maruawai/Menzies 10-0, and second five Wiandro Wiese scored three tries to lead Dunstan to a 62-0 win over Otago Boys' 2nds. St Kevin's show competitive ability
Photo: file Perhaps the co-educational schools are finally closing the gap in the Southern Schools Rugby Championship. St Kevin's stuck with King's for 35 minutes in a division 1 game at Kettle Park on Thursday. They went into the break tied 12-12. King's finished strongly to seal a 36-12 win. St Kevin's coach Justin Fowler was partially satisfied with the effort. "We were definitely happy with that first half," he said. "I think we controlled territory quite well and we had a couple of try-scoring opportunities which we capitalised on. "Defensively, we weren't too bad either. "But just in the second half, I think we lost our way a little bit by doing too much in the half. We put ourselves under pressure." Powerhouse No 8 Siu Fisipuna carried strongly and got St Kevin's over the advantage line, while openside Sam Fluksa covered a lot of ground. First five Lachlan Neal shone in the opening half. "We probably have [bridged the gap a bit]. But, look, it is early days for us. But we're pretty excited with what we've got, we've just got to sort of limit our mistakes." St Kevin's play Waitaki Boys' in the Blood Match this Saturday and will back up on Sunday with a game against Otago Boys', which is a big ask. In the other division 1 games this round, Otago Boys' beat John McGlashan 17-12 at Logan Park, and Southland Boys' beat Southland Boys' 2nds 63-5. In division 2, Wakatipu edged rivals Mt Aspiring 22-21 in Queenstown, Waitaki Boys' posted a 43-36 win over Dunstan in Oamaru, and South Otago beat Otago Boys' 2nds 27-14 in Dunedin. In division 3, Taieri College beat Cromwell 26-17 in Mosgiel, Central Southland recorded a 32-17 win over Māruawai/Menzies in Winton, and King's 2nds beat John McGlashan 2nds 28-26 at Bishopscourt.

St Kevin's and Meads Cup successes hard to top
Jacob Coghlan. PHOTO: ODT FILES 1. Favourite rugby memory? Winning a couple of Blood Matches with St Kevin's in 2013 and 2014. It would be a toss-up between those and winning the Meads Cup with the Old Golds in 2019. 2. Hardest opponent? Jesse Lusty-Winter, who played for Waitaki Boys'. Absolute grub, ha ha. Also one of my best mates and he is going to be in our wedding party. 3. Which rugby player do you admire and why? Morgan Mitchell. He's just one of the best blokes you will ever meet. Workhorse, scrummaging powerhouse, puts in shots. 4. What do you do to relax? I like to read a book. And I'm a bit obsessed with my fire and collecting firewood. I know it sounds weird but the best part of my day is getting home and lighting the fire, ha ha. 5. If Jacob Coghlan is cooking, what are we eating? Lamb roast.

Division one spot up for grabs in schools competition
St Kevin's College will meet Mount Aspiring College for a shot at being elevated to division one in the Southern Schools Rugby Championship. The Oamaru and Wānaka schools had strong wins to wrap up as the top seeds in the championship's maroon and blue pools today. They will now face each other in a playoff game in Ranfurly on Saturday, in the only game for the schools competition next weekend. St Kevin's finished as the top seed of the blue pool with a 26-14 win against Central Southland College in chilly conditions in Oamaru today. Coach Justin Fowler was rapt with his team. "Very, very happy with that," Fowler said. "Certainly was a goal of ours to have a crack at that top six at some stage. "Very proud of the boys. We've sort of won tough in the last couple of weeks, which has been good" Playing at home in wet and slippery conditions, St Kevin's controlled the second half to secure the win. "When we managed to play some good territory we looked good with the ball in hand, especially in that second half. "Our set piece was a little bit shaky, but our ruck ball was good and our counter attack was very good. "We scored probably three long range tries in that second half." It was a team performance, but first five Lachlan Neal controlled the game nicely, centre Kenton Tokai was big defensively and blindside Liasiate Hausia was good with ball and strong defensively. In the other blue pool results, Waitaki Boys' had a monster 59-10 victory against Maruawai/Menzies in Gore, and South Otago ran away 63-0 against John McGlashan College 2nds. Mount Aspiring had a big 50-10 win against Taieri College in the maroon pool. Wakatipu beat King's High School 2nds 50-12 and Otago Boys' High School 2nds got home 30-15 against Cromwell College. In division one, John McGlashan 1sts beat Dunstan 32-17 today and King's High School 1sts had a 47-19 victory against Southland Boys' 2nds on Thursday. Southland Boys' 1sts will play Otago Boys' on Wednesday. After next weekend's playoff game, the competition will be split into division one, two and three for the second round. Southland Boys' 1sts and 2nds, Otago Boys' 1sts, King's 1sts, John McGlashan 1sts and the playoff winner will make up division one. Dunstan has been relegated from division one and will compete in division two with Waitaki Boys', Wakatipu, South Otago, Otago Boys' 2nds and the playoff loser. South Otago, King's 2nds, John McGlashan 2nds, Cromwell, Maruawai/Menzies and Taieri will compete in division three.

See pictures from awards evening at Wicklow community college
The hall was packed put with proud family members of all the students, and Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon, from neighbouring Kildare, was in attendance and helped with the presentations. Principal Brian Doran started off proceedings and introduced everyone, including special speakers, the Cathaoirleach of Baltinglass Municipal District, Cllr Patsy Glennon, who is chair of St Kevin's board of management, and Deputy Edward Timmins, who is a former board member. Also in attendance was Cllr Avril Cronin, who sits on the St Kevin's board of management and is also a member of KWETB. Cllr Pat Mahon also attended the event, while two other special guests, Irish 7's rugby player Kathy Baker and basketball player Lorcan Murphy, helped out with the sports awards presentations. Principal Doran said: 'Awards were presented for different academic achievements and sporting awards were also presented. We also had best attendance awards and presentations for highest Leaving Certificate results. The main trust of the evening was attendance and endeavour. We wanted to reward students who made a committed effort throughout school, which ties in with our school motto 'striving together for excellence'. Notable winners on the evening included Lauren Donaghy, who was presented with the award for best leaving certificate results and currently studies veterinary medicine at UCD. Lilly Ann Swaine Fogarty was the winner of best overall result in leaving certificate applied 2024, while Conor Bruce was the winner of the Citizenship Award. The Dunlavin based school is still waiting to go out to tender after receiving planning permission in May of 2023 for the construct of a new school campus that will see the capacity at the secondary school increase from 700 to 1,000 students. The proposed development at St Kevin's will include the refurbishment of the existing two-storey school building and the demolition of the existing single-storey school building (c 2,139sq.m) and the removal of temporary classroom accommodation to make way for the construction of a three-storey extension (c 8,023sq.m). The development will provide new specialist classrooms, a Special Education Need (SEN) unit, a library, two new multi-use games areas (MUGA), an outdoor classroom/ biodiversity area and a SEN external play area. The existing sports pitch will be relocated as part of the development, with solar photovoltaic panels (PV) erected at roof level to reduce electricity costs and a total of 82 car parking spaces and 200 bicycle parking spaces for students, faculty and parents created.
