Law & Order: Organized Crime Season Finale Recap: Did Grief Lure Stabler Into Making a Choice He Can't Undo? — Plus, Grade It!
After Joe Jr.'s death in last week's Law & Order: Organized Crime, Stabler is in a very bad way at the start of the Season 5 finale. Let's face it: El has never been a super by-the-books type of cop, and when crushing grief enters the picture, he's poised to make choices that will set him on a very bad path in the future. 'You have no idea the lengths I'm going to go to go get what I want,' Stabler says, dousing the bald bad guy with lighter fluid and striking a match. He offers him a choice: Mathis can answer Stabler's questions about Emery's whereabouts now 'or after I put out the fire,' Elliot says menacingly. 'What's it gonna be?' Bell and Reyes, who are both back at the office, theorize that Emery is hiding out in New York while everyone is looking for him. The sergeant tells Reyes that Stabler has taken bereavement leave; Reyes notes that's extremely unlike their workaholic colleague. Then Tanner shows up to let them know that the Captagon (Emery's designer drug) deal is still going through, and the new NYPD dictate is to bring Emery in alive. Tanner is worried that Stabler won't steer clear of the situation, but Bell assures her he will. Just then, Reyes gets a text… and it's Stabler, absolutely not steering clear of the situation. Reyes reluctantly agrees to help Stabler, who hands over Mathis for processing and asks Reyes to do some digging to find Emery's whereabouts. Then Stabler and McKenna go to a diner where Elliot says he's dreading telling his mother about Joe's death. McKenna knows that Stabler wants to kill Emery, and he's on board, but he's apparently also become a well adjusted paragon of mental health in the few episodes since we last saw him. 'Revenge doesn't bring light,' he advises, ' just a different kind of darkness.' A PACKAGE FROM JOE | Stabler and McKenna have just finished roughing up one of Emery's contacts when Randall texts, demanding a meeting. The brothers meet, and Randall hands over an envelope that arrived with a note for Elliot: It's a broken flash drive from Joe Jr. 'When he was in my arms, he said, 'I mailed it,'' Elliot says. Then he instructs Randall to take the rest of the family out to Bernie's house in Montauk for a few days to keep them safe. 'You got people to take care of here, Elliot,' Randall says, begging his brother not to continue on the path he's chosen. 'Go to Montauk,' Elliot says in parting. He then secretly meets with a very confused Vargas, who agrees to try to get the files off Joe's broken drive. Stabler and McKenna figure out that Emery's ex-wife and son are in New York, so they swing by to do a little light intimidation. The ex, Allegra, quickly realizes what's going on and calls Emery, putting him on speaker so that he can directly talk to Stabler. But Elliot's threats don't work — Emery basically tells his son 'good luck, kid! See ya never.' However, Vargas tracks the call, which gives Stabler and McKenna the Brit's location. Once more, McKenna proves the cooler head (I know, weird, right?) by having Stabler pause for a second before he busts in and tries to take out Emery himself. BACK WITH THE TEAM | Next thing we know, Stabler marches into the office and announces that he knows where Emery is going. Looks like he made the correct choice after all! Bell is livid that Stabler's been working the case the whole time and that her staffers have been lying to her about helping him. 'Sarge, I understand,' Stabler says. 'Now, we can sit here and discuss all the ways that I f—ked up, or we can get after Emery.' So they do. Bell, Stabler, Tanner, Reyes and a bunch more cops storm Emery's transport; a gunfight erupts. Emery sneaks away, but Stabler eventually corners him. There's a moment where it's not clear that Stabler is going to abide by the 'bring him in alive' mandate, but then Bell appears and takes the choice away from him by grabbing Emery's gun and cuffing him. Emery knows his future is bleak if he doesn't do something big, so he offers his inside knowledge of three top Hezbollah leaders in exchange for an unfreezing of his assets and house arrest on his estate in Devonshire. And… he gets it! 'HE KILLED MY BROTHER!' Stabler yells in protest, but it's a done deal: The Brit is getting off easy. CHANGE OF PLANS | But! Just before Stabler stalks out of the office in disgust, Vargas makes a breakthrough with the flash drive: It's full of photos and other evidence against Emery, proving that Joe Jr. truly was working against his criminal boss for the past six months. And that evidence negates Emery's deal with the Department of Justice. 'Whatever my brother's problems were, he was a Stabler, and he just put your ass away for the rest of your life,' Stabler says. Earlier in the episode, Randall found a half-filled-out application for the New York Police Department that Joe had abandoned years before. So that's on Elliot's mind after he finishes talking with Emery. 'Today, he was a cop, and a good one,' Stabler tells Reyes, Bell, Vargas and Tanner after he exits the interrogation room. Elliot finds Bernie and tells her they're going to a ceremony for Joe Jr. — he doesn't say exactly what's going on, but she starts to cry. HAS NO ONE TOLD THIS WOMAN HER CHILD IS DEAD YET? Then the family gathers in a hallway at what I'm assuming is NYPD headquarters, where a plaque commemorates Joe among notable cops who've died in the line of duty. (Bell pulled some strings.) The hour ends with Stabler and McKenna getting a six pack and hang out at the waterfront, looking at the lights of the city and toasting Stabler's little brother. Now it's your turn. Law & Order and SVU Renewed at NBC
Perps of the greater New York area, you're on notice: Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU aren't going anywhere. Both police procedurals have been renewed at NBC, TVLine has learned. The renewals will bring Law & Order to Season 25 and SVU to Season 27. (As of press time, Brilliant Minds, Found, Grosse Pointe Garden Society, The Hunting Party, The Irrational, Lopez vs. Lopez, Night Court and Suits LA are all still on the bubble.) Out of the 11 dramas that NBC has aired this TV season, it ranks No. 5 (trailing only the #OneChicago trio and SVU). SVU, meanwhile, is averaging 5.7 million total viewers (with delayed playback) season to date, down 17% from last season (now airing opposite the freshman hit Matlock). Law & Order: Organized Crime's Eli Turns a Complicated Situation Fatal — Read Episode 4 Recap
It can't be easy, being Det. Elliot Stabler's youngest child and trying to forge a career in the New York City Police Department — and it's sure not going to get easier after this week's Law & Order: Organized Crime. Eli takes action in the hour's final moments, and that action is likely to make things much more complicated, and potentially a lot more dangerous, for his pop as the season continues. Read on for the highlights of Episode 4, 'Promesse Infrante.' PIETRO JOINS THE FAMILY BUSINESS | At the top of the episode, Stabler is talking to a therapist. Bravo, Elliot! You're finally dealing with decades of trauma and grief, learning to forgive others and yourself and — oh wait, this is a department-mandated session, and you'd rather have food poisoning than talk about your feelings a minute longer. The shrink doesn't love Stabler's insistence that 'compartmentalization' is going to get him through like it always does, so she gives him a conditional release and says she wants to keep seeing him for the next three months. Later, at the office, Stabler admits to Bell that he doesn't know yet if Isabella Spezzano is involved in the criminal activity they're investigating, but he's pretty sure her older grandson, Roman, is. Meanwhile, Reyes gets word that the destabilized Los Santos organization is looking for some new members, so he goes undercover with the gang. As we know, Roman definitely is involved in the family business, and he soon has younger brother Pietro involved, as well. And when Pietro's twin sister tells Isabella that something's off about Pietro, Isabella searches his room and finds a gun. WHO'S WATCHING STABLER? | Since the Spezzano's church seems to be ground central for the crime ring to recruit teens, Stabler pays a visit to the parish priest, Father Antonio. As they both sit on opposite sides of the confessional, Stabler is up front about the fact that he's a cop and he's going to do everything he can to stop the violence. As he leaves, someone watches him go on security footage. 'Who was that?' an unseen person asks the man watching the video. 'Someone who should be dead,' he answers. Meanwhile, Los Santos accept Reyes into their operation and give him a pretty awful beat-down as part of his initiation. He's later able to give Bell some intel: A man named Angel Acosta is Los Santos' new boss, and they're preparing for a strike against the Camorra. CASA STABLER HAS A VACANCY | Stabler returns home to find Becky and Eli moving out of the apartment. They found a spot in Randall's building, they sheepishly tell El, who isn't pleased. In their defense: They did just get shot at on their own front steps, no? Shortly after they go, Isabella swings by. Elliot mentions the imminent attack, which scares her, but she doesn't offer any specific information about the Camorra. At the office the next day, Bell knows about Isabella's visit, which causes Stabler to guess that Eli (who saw her on his way out) mentioned it to his field training officer; word traveled, and now NYPD brass are involved, worried that Stabler is in too deep. He counters that he's pretty sure Isabella's stop-by was a strategic tactic to glean how the investigation is going. Bell trusts him but warns him to keep things with his Italian informant under control. Stabler later brings Father Antonio into the station for questioning; he's made a lot of trips to Naples lately, though he claims they were just to tend to his elderly mother. Unbeknownst to him, Isabella watches from the other side of the two-way mirror and identifies him as a Camorra member who was a friend of her brother's and who could be serving as his eyes and ears while Rocco is in prison in Italy. 'IT'S MY TURN NOW' | Not long after, Los Santos and the Spezzanos get into a nighttime shootout; Reyes ends up with his gun trained on Pietro, but none of the Los Santos members are looking, so he (obviously) lets him go. By the time the police get there, there are a bunch of dead bodies and no suspects to nab. Eli is working the crime scene's perimeter; Elliot storms over and asks him about talking about Isabella with his superiors. Eli admits it came up during a conversation with his FTO… who's standing right there and shuts down the conversation. After Pietro doesn't come home and the police bring Isabella to her local station, Stabler tells her about the boy being at the scene of a violent crime. This causes her to lay into Roman at home, demanding that he and Pietro cut ties with the Camorra. He says it's not that easy, and informs her that he's the new head of their family. 'You lost the right to make decisions for us,' he sneers. 'It's my turn now.' ELI ACTS | Everything comes to a head when Stabler confront Roman at the brewery that's serving as a front for his crime operation. Pietro is there, too. Bell is able to give Stabler a tiny heads-up that Los Santos are on their way; when the other crime ring arrives, a shootout ensues. Roman takes a bullet and runs out the back of the building. Pietro gets Reyes in his crosshairs just as the uniformed officers arrive; the teen is incredibly freaked out but also won't drop his weapon. And when he doesn't, a just-arrived-on-the-scene Eli shoots Pietro in the chest, killing him. 'He was going to… he was going to,' repeats a stunned Eli, who can't seem to fathom what he's just done. Stabler orders the other officers to take his son outside, realizing that this mess of a case just got a lot more complicated. Now it's your turn. What did you think of the episode? SVU's Mariska Hargitay, Chris Meloni to Reunite in Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Crossover: Find Out When, Watch Teaser
Oh, girlfriend's coming on, alright. Law & Order: Organized Crime's upcoming Season 5 will feature a visit from Law & Order: SVU's Capt. Olivia Benson, played by Mariska Hargitay, TVLine has learned. The crossover confirms what Organize Crime star Chris Meloni said on TODAY in August: that he and Hargitay were plotting how to get his Stabler and her Benson in the same room again. The characters, who were New York Police Department partners for SVU's first 12 seasons, have not shared a scene since the end of Organized Crime's third season, though they spoke on the phone in SVU's Season 25 finale. Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5: Everything We Know So Far View List 'Oh, girlfriend's coming on,' Meloni said during an interview about his show's next season. Similarly, in May, Hargitay said it was 'time now' for the characters to reunite. 'This was a long time not being in each other's universe,' she added. 'That's why we did the calls and stuff like that. But we're excited to get back in there, get back in the ring.' Per the season's official synopsis, the new season will explore 'the dangerous worlds of cross-border smuggling, high-tech domestic terrorism and a crime family intent on repaying Stabler for the injury he did them in Rome. As his worlds collide, Stabler will put everything on the line to protect the vulnerable and fight for justice.'
