Vernon Adams Jr. out, P.J. Walker in: What's it mean at QB for Calgary Stampeders?

Article content 'Take full advantage of it and step in and lead this team — lead this team to a win,' declared Walker, whose summoning his rookie NFL start in 2020 for experience heading into his first CFL start. Article content 'Look back at just the way I operated, how I went into it, the way I approached the game that week …' continued Walker. 'For me, I'm gonna take that same approach this week. So for me, it's just to be ready and also go back and watch a little bit of that tape from when I had my first (NFL) start and things like that and just see what mistakes I made and see what mistakes I corrected. Article content 'That might lead to some positive things out on the football field.' Article content That's the hope of the Stamps, who can't even turn to Adams if things don't go well for Walker in Ottawa. Article content The veteran QB has been shifted to the one-game injured list, leaving three rookies on the depth chart — including Josh Love and draftee Quincy Vaughn — for the contest against the league's bottom-feeder in the standings. Article content 'As a backup quarterback — I've been there — you're chomping at the bit to get in there and you want to be prepared and you want to feel like you have a chance that you've at least done some things or you feel comfortable calling plays,' Dickenson said. 'We're pretty late in the season, so he's done that. Article content 'Him and Josh have certainly taken advantage of some extra reps (this week).' Article content So, Dickenson hopes, has a couple of receivers stepping in off the practice roster. Article content Both Daylen Baldwin and Vyshonne Janusas make their debut starts at slotback, with hamstring injuries to clutch receivers Jalen Philpot and Damien Alford sidelining them. Of course, that makes it all that much more challenging for a backup — and CFL rookie — stepping in at quarterback. Article content Throw in the fact that it's the Stampeders' fourth game in just 20 days, and it makes for an interesting lead-up to the rematch of that loss to the struggling Redblacks played in monsoon-like conditions at McMahon Stadium in Week 3. Article content 'The CFL in general this year, a lot of the games still come down to the last possession or two, and that's what happened to us last week, as well,' Dickenson said. 'So it's take advantage of your opportunities. I mean … we were down short inside the five(-yard line) twice and didn't come away with any points the last time against Ottawa. Missed on an aggressive play and also on short yardage — third and one. You won't win many games if you can't score touchdowns. We've been doing a good job of scoring touchdowns. Article content Article content 'Can we continue? We'll see.' Article content We'll see, indeed, with rookie QBs under centre, a handful of key personnel sidelined and fatigue having become another obstacle to overcome. Article content 'We've worked hard,' added Dickenson. 'I don't think it's been super sharp this week, but we've worked hard. If you get a seven-day week, most of the time, people can heal in seven days and get back to playing. Article content DB Adrian Greene (lower leg) is a game-time decision for the Stampeders after being knocked out of last week's loss … OL Josh Coker steps back into the Stamps' starting lineup, after missing last week's game at right tackle … P Fraser Masin also returns to the roster after missing a few affairs, sending P Mark Vassett back to the practice roster … Others back on the roster are OL Tomas Jack-Kurdyla, DL George Idoko and LB Justin Herdman-Reed (neck) … Stamps dropped from last week's lineup are and OL Preston Nichols, LB Maurice Blackwell Jr. and DB Ben Labrosse (hamstring). Stampeders in Week 9 — QB Vernon Adams Jr. up in air to play host Redblacks

Article content Article content Pretty much everyone on the Stamps has got to be feeling it. Article content After all, they're heading into their fourth game in 20 days, and last week's contest took a toll on them health-wise. Article content Adams wasn't the only casualty on the offence. So, too, were a couple of his key receivers — rookie Damien Alford and veteran Jalen Philpot both suffered hamstring injuries. And neither participated in practice Sunday, but Philpot was a limited participant Monday. Article content To boot, the offence is still without clutch receiver Clark Barnes, who's still got an ankle issue and didn't practise Sunday or Monday. Article content 'It's tough on the guys, definitely in the trenches,' added Adams, of the tight schedule. 'I feel for those guys (on the offensive line), but these guys are working hard, they're hitting the weight room, and they're doing what they need to do to get their bodies together. So we had a little lighter practice, I think, just to get guys (healthy) — we got some guys down. So guys are doing what they need to do to be out here.' Article content Article content With injuries to multiple defensive backs last week — Adrian Greene (lower body) and Ben Labrosse (hamstring) were both lost at the field-side cornerback spot, the Stampeders have signed Canadian DB Dolani Robinson. The 6-foot-3, 194-lb. Robinson attended training camp with the Stampeders in May and participated in both pre-season games, notching two defensive tackles, one special-teams tackle and one knockdown. The native of Jamaica and 2024 Canada West all-star with the U SPORTS' Regina Rams was among the final round of roster cuts at the conclusion of camp … DB Tyler Richardson (groin), who started the first four games for the Stamps at boundary-side corner, and DB Jackson Sombach (hamstring) are also injured secondary talents … Labrosse did not practise Monday, while Sombach was a limited participant at practice Monday, as was LS Aaron Crawford (knee) … Other injured Stamps practising fully at Monday's session were OL Josh Coker (ankle) — the starter at right tackle — LB Kelechi Anyalebechi (foot) and LB Justin Herdman-Reed (neck). LSU football cornerback leads all returning SEC defensive backs in key stat

LSU football cornerback Ashton Stamps didn't earn Preseason All-SEC honors at SEC Media Days, but LSU fans should be optimistic about the junior corner entering 2025. According to PFF, Stamps and Texas cornerback Malik Muhammad each broke up nine passes in 2024, which is the best mark among returning SEC corners in 2025. Playing opposite of Zy Alexander, Stamps was thrown at a lot in 2024. Stamps was targeted 60 times, but with nine pass breakups and a forced incompletion rate of 18%, Stamps made consistent plays on the ball. Stamps wasn't able to convert any of the pass breakups into picks, though. Stamps' 2024 play was up and down, but his ability to disrupt and force incompletions is a strong sign we may see a step forward in 2025. Stamps was thrown into the fire as a true freshman in 2023 and struggled with the rest of the LSU defense. But when Stamps got a chance as a full-time starter in 2024, progress was evident. LSU expects a big year from the secondary with Stamps taking another step.

5 Takeaways as tired-looking Calgary Stampeders fall to Montreal Alouettes on late 58-yard field goal

It looked another winning week for the Calgary Stampeders … Article content Another K.O. of a contender for the Canadian Football League belt. Article content Article content But after handling everything the three-down circuit has thrown at them, it didn't go their way Thursday night in a 23-21 loss to the Montreal Alouettes at McMahon Stadium. Article content Despite two touchdowns and a pile of yards from running back Dedrick Mills and a gutsy effort amid a bunch of games in a short period of time, the host Stampeders were dropped by the 2023 Grey Cup champions, who have been championship calibre for the past few CFL campaigns. Article content Article content 'Effort was good on our end,' said Stampeders GM/head coach Dave Dickenson. 'We had the lead most of the game. It was a hard-fought game. I think both teams were digging deep on their roster. Article content Article content 'We kind of ran out of some people there, and we were trying to adjust. And I just didn't think we played winning football. We took too many penalties, and obviously, ball security (was a problem), as well. We had our chances — we just didn't get the job done.' Article content It didn't help that Stamps QB Vernon Adams Jr. was ineffective for long stretches of the game and then was lost to them for the fourth quarter, when he was sidelined presumably by a CFL spotter for a concussion check. Article content Article content Article content The end result kept the Stamps from climbing into top spot all by themselves in the CFL. Instead, the 5-2 record matches them with the Alouettes and leaves them behind the first-place 5-1 Saskatchewan Roughriders. Article content Article content 'Hard-fought game — we knew it was going to be a hard-fought battle,' said Stampeders receiver Dominique Rhymes. '(Maltos) made a 58-yarder. Hats off to them. That's a great team. It was a battle. It was what we expected.'
